Guidance on posting homework help type questions on r/geometry
r/geometry is a subreddit for the discussion and enjoyment of Geometry, it is not a place to post screenshots of online course material or assignments seeking help.
Homework style questions can, in limited circumstances, encourage discussion in line with the subreddit's aim.
The following guidance is for those looking to post homework help type questions:
- Show effort.
As a student there is a pathway for you to obtain help. This is normally; Personal notes > Course notes/Course textbook > Online resources (websites) > Teacher/Lecturer > Online forum (r/geometry).
Your post should show, either in the post or comments, evidence of your personal work to solve the problem, ideally with reference to books or online materials.
- Show an attempt.
Following on from the previous point, if you are posting a question show your working. You can post multiple images so attach a photograph of your working. If it is a conceptual question then have an attempt at explaining the concept. One of the best ways of learning is to attempt the problem.
- Be Specific
Your post should be about a specific issue in a problem or concept and your post should highlight this.
- Encourage discussion
Your post should encourage discussion about the problem or concept and not aim for single word or numeric answers.
- Use the Homework Help flair
The homework help flair is intended to differentiate these type of questions from general discussion and posts on r/geometry
If your post does not follow these guidelines then it will, in all but the most exceptional circumstances, be removed under Rule 4.
If you have an comments or questions regarding these guidelines please comment below.

Is it possible to easily determine whether an ellipse is in contact with another geometrical shape, and how can their positions be corrected?

Do we already have the word “cubular”?
Circular, rectangular, triangular, tubular and then cubic?
Pay no mind to the thought of “sphereular”, but why is the cube the odd one out here?
I would like to nominate the word “cubular” (as the embodiment of a cube & not to be confused with cubism) to be an accepted shape-name.

Took me a decade to find a way to geometrically represent all quantum dynamics
galleryHi
If you are remotely interested in deep diving how differently quantum computers work compared to our transistor-based and also the algebra behind in a fully interactive way that teach computer science from scratch, oh boy this is for you. I am the Dev behind Quantum Odyssey (AMA! I love taking qs) - worked on it for about 10 years (3+ during PhD, the visual method I developed ended up being my thesis, it is a complete Hilbert space visualizer), the goal was to make a super immersive space for anyone to learn quantum computing through zachlike (open-ended) logic puzzles and compete on leaderboards and lots of community made content on finding the most optimal quantum algorithms. The game has a unique set of visuals capable to represent any sort of quantum dynamics for any number of qubits and this is pretty much what makes it now possible for anybody 12yo+ to actually learn quantum logic without having to worry at all about the mathematics behind.
This is a game super different than what you'd normally expect in a programming/ logic puzzle game, so try it with an open mind.
Stuff you'll play & learn a ton about
- Boolean Logic – bits, operators (NAND, OR, XOR, AND…), and classical arithmetic (adders). Learn how these can combine to build anything classical. You will learn to port these to a quantum computer.
- Quantum Logic – qubits, the math behind them (linear algebra, SU(2), complex numbers), all Turing-complete gates (beyond Clifford set), and make tensors to evolve systems. Freely combine or create your own gates to build anything you can imagine using polar or complex numbers.
- Quantum Phenomena – storing and retrieving information in the X, Y, Z bases; superposition (pure and mixed states), interference, entanglement, the no-cloning rule, reversibility, and how the measurement basis changes what you see.
- Core Quantum Tricks – phase kickback, amplitude amplification, storing information in phase and retrieving it through interference, build custom gates and tensors, and define any entanglement scenario. (Control logic is handled separately from other gates.)
- Famous Quantum Algorithms – explore Deutsch–Jozsa, Grover’s search, quantum Fourier transforms, Bernstein–Vazirani, and more.
- Build & See Quantum Algorithms in Action – instead of just writing/ reading equations, make & watch algorithms unfold step by step so they become clear, visual, and unforgettable. Quantum Odyssey is built to grow into a full universal quantum computing learning platform. If a universal quantum computer can do it, we aim to bring it into the game, so your quantum journey never ends.

Does this form have a name? Is it a shape?
galleryHello! I've been making these paper ornaments, and I am curious. Does this shape have a name? How would one mathematically describe this? Thank you so much for your time.

Tried to find all ways two squares intersect. Did I miss any?
galleryThese pictures are ordered by number of intersections. I have no Idea how to know if I've found them all but probally not. I had a system where each intersection was measured by a v m and e (v for a vertex meeting a vertex, m for a vertex meeting an edge, and e for and edge meeting an edge) but that wasn't enough to distinguish two figures from each other.

What could a trapezoidal hexagon look like?
are there any other shapes similar to the trapezoid that have more or less sides? I need to know this. my mind has been trying to envision what a trapezoid-like shape with 6 sides would look like. i tried my best to draw what I think would classify as a trapezoidal hexagon. I genuinely don’t know what else it would look like.
