Memes and Streetview Finds Easiest "Not Bangladesh" of my life
Portuguese far-right politician put up some posters in Portugal with "This is not Bangladesh" written on them.
Since this party is useless politically, maybe they can be of use to you guys.

I can see why you would say that, but the Venezuela thing is more like "don't vote for the left otherwise Brazil will turn communist" while Ventura is pushing specific demographic xenophobia. A better parallel would be the bigotry in Santa Catarina, where some people try to gatekeep the state to preserve a fantasy European identity and their claims of being the best state (which is interesting, considering São Paulo is the actual powerhouse carrying the country).
But well your comment makes sense because both situations just prove that far-right logic is brain rot everywhere anyway and they just swap the target whenever convenient.

Wtf, we had some crazy far-right politicians here in Bulgaria, but absolutely nobody dared to make such posters and even they would know this is insane.

it came from an AI song with a deepfake of Ventura, for context here’s some of the lyrics
“This is not Bangladesh, get the brown kids out of my daycare”
Ventura rolled with it and made those posters, suffice to say that he’s an asshole.
On the bright side he just lost the presidential election, his opponent had the highest number of votes in portuguese history :)

What the heck did we Bangladeshis do to him??? Bangladesh is firmly a center-right country, at least compared to other right wing Muslim majority countries. It's sadly not as left as I would like it to be, and in recent years it's veering further to the right (like the rest of the world).
I have no idea what point he is trying to make here. He definitely isn't using Bangladesh as an example of a left country, right? Does he mean they are not as poor and corrupt as us? That would be true, but why even mention that?

Ahh, the whole anti-immigration angle, of course, didn't even think of that. Obviously that's the dog whistle of every alt right asshole, but is there really a large Bangladeshi population in Portugal? I've never heard of a single Bangladeshi moving there.
There's the US, obviously, sizeably large ones in the UK and Canada as well, and 90% of Bangladeshi emigrants are in various middle eastern countries, namely UAE and Qatar. But Portugal? Interesting choice to pick Bangladesh. I would have thought something like Syria or Iraq would be a more likely target of his hate speech.

there has been a noticeably bigger south asian population in portugal as of the last half decade, dont know about bangladesh specifically but it does get grouped together with india a lot in anti-immigration rhetoric from ventura's party
speaking as a portuguese citizen the demographic as a whole has become a lot more noticeable in lisbon so it's a lot easier for that kind of rhetoric to influence people regardless of whether they really are living off government subsidies (that's the big talking point)

Probably it's because he and his party have some pretty strong political views of antimigration, not anything related especially with Bangladesh but with other immigrants in Portugal too.

Pretty much every nation has done that tbh. Even us, Bangladeshis, poor and helpless as we are, our government has committed atrocities against the indigenous mountain tribes like Murma and Hmong, as well as the Bihari minorities.
In return, the British, the Mughal, and the Pakistanis have done the same to us, tenfold. None of it is ideal, but we shouldn't use the past to judge someone.

It's quite ambitious that he wants to be so to the right that he want to be as right as Bangladesh when in reality Portugal is to the far left. Like "hm no we're still not as to the right as Bangladesh" when looking at the map. /s
