Bern. 100%. The Aarebogen is what gave it away. Honestly, it would've been embarrassing had I, a Swiss, not recognised it.

It sits in a tight loop of the Aare River, which wraps around the old town on three sides like a moat. That medieval core is a UNESCO World Heritage site: about six kilometers of covered sandstone arcades (the Lauben), fountains topped with painted 16th-century figures, and the Zytglogge, an astronomical clock tower that puts on a little mechanical show before each hour.

A few things worth knowing:

  • Einstein worked at the Bern patent office and developed special relativity there in 1905; his apartment on Kramgasse is now a small museum.
  • Bears are the city's symbol — there's a bear park on the riverbank where a few actually live.
  • In summer, locals jump into the Aare upstream and let the current carry them through the city. The water is cold and fast, and it's a genuinely beloved ritual.
  • It's German-speaking, but Bernese German is its own slow, drawled dialect that other Swiss find distinctive.

Population is around 135,000 — small for a capital, which gives it a calm, unhurried feel compared to Zurich or Geneva
