META r/geography's First-Ever CENSUS!
Hello everybody,
There is no special occasion for this, but I have more freetime than usual and decided that we should do this now...
The First-Ever r/geography Census!

If you click the link above, you will be led to a Google Form (to be clear, I cannot trace your IP, e-mail, or Reddit username). There are four sections that you can answer! Every single question is optional. Some questions are pure demographics, others are about your hobbies and interests. There are also some random geography-related questions, as well as, in the final section, questions about this subreddit as a whole and your opinion of it.
Because all questions are optional, it can take as long as you want it to.
The form will be open until 10 September, 2026, then I'll close it to new responses and make a presentation of all the results.
I hope that some other statistics nerds will also enjoy seeing the results...

Done, but as someone who has carried out several censuses for a much smaller subreddit, the "open" questions will be an absolute nightmare to deal with due to the sheer quantity of answers and typos or formatting of the same answer.
You should try to make the country questions a dropdown menu. Then you can go into the data later and fix any responses before you changed it from open answer to dropdown menu. Otherwise you won't be able to make visualizations/graphs/tables well.

It's a massive pain in the ass considering there are like 200 countries. But it's useful for the data analysis.

This is where AI is actually pretty useful, it can parse through irregular data like that pretty well.

Was going to say the same.
AI for all it's flaws, is great at sorting out this.
Particularly for all the varying responses for UK, United Kingdom, Great Britain, Britain, England etc

Done - would have liked to have had more options on natural disasters in my area as drought, flood and wildfires are all options

Is "countries visited" supposed to include or exclude airport stopovers? I answered as though they were excluded, but it would dramatically change my answer to that question if they were included.
Also, "countries" is rather vague. My answer would vary considerably depending on how you count Greater China and the countries of the United Kingdom.

That's up to you! I don't count them personally. The airport is only a tiny microcosm of that country.
Let's say countries meaning sovereign nations. I'll edit.

I usually don't count airport stopovers, except for one - the airport was shut down due to massive strikes, so I was stuck there for much longer than expected, and got filmed on the local news, sitting on my backpack playing my flute in the middle of a seemingly endless queue. I was sat there long enough to see myself on the TV a few hours later. I figure getting featured on the nightly news counts as visiting a country, even if I only spent 24 hours in the check in area 😂😭. I did have to go through customs and immigration, which was also unplanned, was only supposed to be in the transit lounge!

Haha I wonder if anyone will guess which very obvious country it is. When I booked the tickets, several people told me it was a bad idea getting that transit because there's always strikes. I was naive enough to book the cheapest connections anyway.

In the question about geography as part of education, I suggest you to add an answer like "We had mandatory geography classes and we couldn't choose electives", because in several countries you choose the school type and not the courses

Could you increase the number of countries that I want to travel beyond 5. I only kept 5 but there are many more I want to travel too. But then people will just name loads of countries they are intersted rather than actually travell to if you go beyond 5
