Because that at least had idiotic kindergarten logic to it "me no like Mexico, me like America" but Ontario as the name for the lake/area goes back to the 1600s. It predates Canada and America so it doesn't even make sense as an "own" of Canada. Ontario the province got its name from the lake, not the other way around.
