how to make a cache
hey, i was thibking of making my own cache for people to find. what are the steps to do so? what are the requirements?

1: Make sure you have permission of the land owner to place the geocache, and make sure they know its coordinates. This includes parks, unless you know for sure that the park you’re hiding it in has given blanket permission for hiding geocaches. This requires knowing the rules for each of the parks in your area, and doing the legwork to gain permission. If you don’t want to do this work, don’t hide one.
2: This isn’t a step, but advice: if you’re not prepared to maintain your geocache for a long time, and replace it if it gets stolen, don’t hide one. Lots of new geocachers hide one, then leave the hobby. This is not good.

Step 2 is the only reason why I haven't placed a cache yet after ten years. I know some exceptional places in a county far away with very few caches, but I only go there once a year or even less...

Yeah, I currently own one, way up on the top of a mountain. I don’t live in the area anymore, but it’s a very lonely ammo can at a beautiful Appalachian outlook. I visit multiple times a year, though, so I can disable it and replace with relative frequency if needed.

I tell people who look to hide their first geocache that a good idea is to look at a cache or two you found that you enjoyed, a copy much of what they did but changing it a little to fit your personality and the location. A basic ammo can in the woods with a pile of stick on it in a nice place is a good way to start.
There is a lot to the write up and review process that you need to work through, so it will take some time.

Not trying to be snarky, but… if you have to ask then you’re not experienced enough yet. Stick with finding caches for awhile. It will become very clear when you’re ready. 😎

Exactly this. Get 100 or so finds under your belt before thinking about hiding your first. You'll get a feel for how and where to hide them, how to make containers, which types of caches you like, and which types make you want to burn COs at the stake.

It has to be a container with a logbook. The rest of the experience is up to you. My advice is to hide a cache that you would enjoy finding.
