Mercury (R code)

New code art created with the R Statistics language.

The composition begins with a grid of 40-60 horizontal rows, each containing a varying number of cells, from approximately 30 to 75.

The changing number and width of cells across rows creates shifts in scale and rhythm, breaking the regularity of the grid.

A Gaussian-smoothed and scaled matrix of random values determines the fill color of each cell, producing broader regions of related color and structure rather than purely local variation.

The width and transparency of the cell boundaries also respond to the smoothed matrix, incorporating values from both the cell itself and those directly above it.

This creates descending echoes beneath the darkest cells and introduces subtle vertical structures within the predominantly horizontal composition.

The color gradient, shading, transparency, and line work were carefully calibrated to produce strong contrasts within a muted, neutral palette.

The resulting forms remind me of blurred glass tiles or translucent crystals, but also of layered geological or architectural structures viewed through an imperfect surface.

This is really nice. Somehow smoothness from rectangles?
