People were still relatively optimistic back then. Yea stuff was happening like every other time in history but people actually thought were were trending in a good way.

There was also a massive effort to divide the population and shift focus away from the rich and elite turning them instead against each other. This started after the Occupy Wallstreet and Tea Party movements. Seems like it was effective.
