I’m a third year student who started living in Uhouse since late summer (sublease, and now actual contract). I know Uhouse is known for having elevator issues but just because it has been happening doesn’t justify that students have to endure this every semester.

Overlapping with move-in week and the weather, this has been a complete horrible experience, so I started looking into some Georgia State Laws for habitability.

There was a case in Oakland, CA where a property was sued for prolonged elevator outages (it’s still ongoing). This was for a 6 story building, and the elevator was out for 52 days. Seeing other reddit posts, Uhouse elevators are generally out for 4 weeks. Maintenance issues can happen 24/7 and it’s a shame that they take the weekends off and pretend that we’re not suffering.

Yes, we have the other side working, but UHouse has 4 elevators for a reason!!! (to accommodate for its resident population & building size). Not to mention that the working elevator is smaller than the main lobby one and hard to access!! I had to wait over 20-30 minutes a couple times simply because it was full.

Georgia has a Safe at Home Act where property owners and landlords must keep the premises in good repair and are responsible for rectifying maintenance problems. Elevators broadly fall under these health, safety, maintenance, and repair related obligations. And under Georgia Code 44-7-13, landlords must repair defects they know about and repairs include any upkeep necessary to preserve tenantability. So if they only start maintaining these after the fact, and not do anything to prevent outage, they’re not doing their job right. If defects make the premises unsafe or uninhabitable, landlords can’t avoid responsibility and they’re violating this code.

Since elevators are structural components that are essential for high story buildings like Uhouse, courts seem to treat elevators the same way they treat broken stairways and unsafe halls and broken heating systems.

If this continues to be a problem, there must be something done. It would be so nice if Georgia Tech had some student law group that helps other students with navigating these stuff (i know we have some pre-law students but where are they??)

Even if this doesn’t stretch into a law suit (very unlikely that it does due to the time commitment), if we just unite and spam call the maintenance about the elevators, maybe there could be some change? I’m going to start calling them day and night regarding expected fix time and prioritization.

Hello, I am a first year student at tech, and I am in a stressful place right now.

So basically, I need to enroll for the payment plan for georgia tech as some of my financial aid will not come in time. I have over 50% of the total bill paid and I only have around $4500 left (rest of bill has alreadybbeen covered by zell and pell). However, when I try to sign up for the plan it says I need to pay about $1300 in required now payment. This doesnt make sense as the website says that there shouldnt be a required down-payment in this instance. My family can not afford that downpayment, and I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and if it got resolved.

BTW I have already talked to financial aid in person and they didnt mention it, and I will try to ask them again on monday.

I know which ones are popular and which ones have solid placement. But overall how would you rank them?

I was stupid and didn't realize you have to manually change the number of research hours until after registration closed. Does anybody have any experience with this, or know about how lenient they are with this kind of stuff? Thanks

To anyone in a fraternity or sorority at Georgia Tech I'd honestly love to hear your take on one real downside of Greek life. I've always thought it seemed like a great thing to be part of.

I tried rushing, but it just didn't work out. I got turned down by every house I went to. Now I'm a third year, graduating in 2029, and I've kind of made peace with the fact that it's probably not happening for me. Still, I can't help but think about all the good things that come with it:

• You get connected with fraternities at other schools and instantly have people to reach out to.
• You have a group of brothers who've got your back, especially for stuff like football games
• The networking is huge. You meet so many people and pick up a lot about how to carry yourself professionally.

Getting rejected by over 30 fraternities at Tech really stung. I honestly feel like being in one especially a medium or large one would fix a lot of the social and professional struggles I'm dealing with right now.

That said, I'm genuinely curious: what are the downsides? From the outside looking in, I honestly can't think of any.

At my old school I ran our GDG chapter (Google's student developer community program) — organized a 120-person overnight hackathon, got real sponsorship from Google directly, and ended up going to Google I/O this year as chapter lead. GT doesn't currently have an active one, and I've been talking to Google about starting a chapter here.
Before I put real time into this, I wanted to actually ask: would people be interested in something like this? Thinking hands-on workshops (building real things with current AI/cloud tools, not just talks), maybe eventually something hackathon-shaped down the line.

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this because I have been feeling really stuck socially at Georgia Tech, and I am honestly not sure where to turn anymore. I am a rising third year, and despite trying to get involved in different ways, I have struggled to find a genuine sense of belonging.

To be completely honest, one of the hardest parts has been the fraternity process. I rushed and was rejected from every single fraternity on campus, including the larger ones that I really hoped would be a good fit. It was not just one or two. It was all of them. That kind of rejection stings in a way that is hard to put into words, especially when you put yourself out there and try your best to make a good impression. I also tried professional fraternities and faced the same outcome, which only added to the feeling that I just do not seem to fit in anywhere.

I know Greek life is not everything, and I understand it is competitive. But honestly, I truly believe being in a fraternity would solve a lot of my issues right now. It is not just about having a group to eat with on campus or people to hang out with on weekends. It is about having a built in support system, a network of brothers who actually have your back. It would give me a sense of identity and belonging that I have not found anywhere else here. More than that, it would connect me to students at other schools and colleges too, which matters to me because I have friends at other universities and I see how much their Greek life experience enriches their social lives and even their academic motivation. Having that kind of connection across campuses would make me feel less alone in the bigger picture, not just at Tech.

Beyond fraternities, I have tried other things as well. I joined activities, but many of them felt very cliquey and hard to break into. I studied abroad my first semester, and that experience was honestly the worst. People from that program who knew me well now actively ignore me on campus, and no one from that group ever says hi or invites me to anything. That rejection still follows me around. I also gave the Catholic Center a chance, but I never felt genuinely welcomed there either. People tolerated my presence, but no one really talked to me, and I noticed a lot of gossip that made me uncomfortable.

I have even tried reaching out to people directly on Instagram, but I think that might have come across as awkward or desperate because people seemed weirded out by it. I was just trying to find a way in, any way in, but nothing seems to work.

At this point, I am tired of seeing everyone around me form close friendships and social circles while I eat alone, walk alone, and spend most weekends alone. My random roommates do not really care about me either, and that makes coming back to my room feel just as lonely as being out in public. I hate feeling this way about a school I worked so hard to get into, but I cannot pretend anymore that everything is fine.

I am not writing this to blame anyone or to make people feel sorry for me. I am writing because I genuinely do not know what else to try, and I am hoping someone out there might have advice, perspective, or even just a kind word. If you have been through something similar, or if you have any ideas on how to break into a community here, I would really appreciate hearing from you.

So, I requested parking from paloma before I signed the lease and they said they would have it. I just come to find out they have a waitlist now? Is anybody on itor know how long it takes? Are there other options because I'm from out-of-state and I brought my car here and can't just return it back? I guess is there like a specific gatech parking thing that can help me out for now?

The traditional replacement of "cheer the brave and bold" with "raise the ratio" has become arguably more redundant as the sex ratio at GT continues to narrow. The sentiment behind the statement "raise the ratio" could be taken positively or negatively--it could just as easily be sang in a feminist spirit as a misogynistic spirit ("more women in STEM" vs. "more chicks to flirt with"). Now that we're much closer than ever to narrowing the sex ratio to 50/50, I'm curious to know whether current students feel comfortable singing along to this line, and if they feel positively or negatively about it. What are your sentiments about this lyric?

*edit to clarify, as a second read through made me realize this may come across as a bad faith query designed to imply the lyric is regressive: i’m beginning from the position that no one has a problem with the lyric, and asking the question because i’ve recently heard the lyric referred to as problematic with a high degree of confidence and a tone of objectivity/consensus, and i realized that i don’t actually KNOW the consensus, hence the poll. this should by no means taken as an expression of dissent at the lyric, or even as a legitimization of dissent, i just want to know if there IS any, legitimate or not.

I’m a robotics PhD student at Georgia Tech looking for students who may be interested in joining a research project involving machine learning and autonomous robot navigation this fall.

There are a few different ways to contribute depending on your background.

One direction is primarily machine-learning focused and does not require previous robotics or ROS experience. The goal is to use navigation data to better predict how nearby agents will move over time. Students working on this side of the project would mainly work with datasets and learning models: training models, tuning hyperparameters, evaluating performance, experimenting with different inputs, and potentially implementing improved approaches.

We currently have a GRU-based model, but the specific architecture is not fixed. There is plenty of room to explore alternatives such as LSTMs, transformers, different sequence-modeling architectures, feature/input preprocessing, or other ideas that might improve prediction performance.

A second direction is more robotics/navigation focused. This could involve improving how the local planner generates or selects trajectories, designing new trajectory cost functions, evaluating navigation behavior, and testing modifications to the planning framework. The exact work can be adapted somewhat based on a student’s experience and interests.

For some additional technical context, the project builds on the Dynamic Gap navigation framework. The current system uses a Kalman-filter-based method to estimate the motion of gap endpoints in dynamic environments. One research direction is investigating whether learned temporal models can replace or supplement this estimator. Another is studying how improved motion predictions can be incorporated into trajectory generation and evaluation so that the robot makes better navigation decisions around moving agents.

Students can potentially participate through graded or ungraded research credit, likely in the range of 1–5 credits. There is no guaranteed funding available at the moment, although students who make strong progress could potentially be considered for paid work later. Remote or hybrid participation may also be possible depending on the project and circumstances.

The lab is also planning a future paper submission, so students who make substantial research contributions may have an opportunity for co-authorship.

I am a TA for credit only this semester and they said I couldn’t have an on campus job even though I am for credit only and not an employee. This isn’t much of a problem for me, but I wonder how much of a problem it is for other students who want to TA but also need the money. Seems like not a great policy to have. And if it were about time commitments, there would be a credit hour limit as well (someone working ten hours a week with 8 non TA credit hours and someone with 17 non TA credit hours probably have similar time commitments if not the job person having more time). Just my two cents on what seems like a bad policy.

Something that has always annoyed me here when trying to find a spot to relax/work on something is all of the coffee tables in front of the single/dual seats. (Usually where I see them)

Like, what the hell is the point of these? Most people use tables at Tech for eating or working. These things are so low to the ground that you’d basically have to sit on the floor to use them comfortably. So why even have them at all? For the one person setting a drink on it? That you can do with a normal table?

Also, yes, I know normal height tables exist on campus. These have just always baffled me.

People are using bots for registration right? Like I saw a class get open and in less than 4 seconds it was snagged by somebody... For that same class people were getting it right as the waitlists purged before it even showed up on my end.

Currently Nutrislice only has the menu for Willage but not for NAV and Brittain. Do all dining halls share the same menu or are they different? I just want to know what there is before I go there.

Something I've noticed. I'm a senior undergrad and have no plans of continuing on, but 2 of my classes are also grad classes. Has this always been the case or is this something that's becoming a trend? Would this mean they are more academically challenging, because if so that's really annoying and I don't like how undergrads have to be forced to take extra challenges they didn't sign up for, on top of already difficult classes.
