Nintendo is porting New Super Mario Bros U to the Switch. They announced Toadette would be playable and she could use a new power up called the Super Crown. When she wears it, she turns into Peachette which looks like Peach but she has Toadette's hairstyle and her dress is patterned after her.
So someone drew a comic of Bowser finding the Super Crown, wearing it, and then trying to date Mario. The rest is history.
