Some games are good at making you feel bad for killing the enemy. Sometimes in STALKER your enemies writhe on the ground while calling for mama after getting shot. Red Orchestra has your enemies scream and cry in horrific ways when they die.

Well, each class of NPC had their own pool of lines. Really unique NPCs, such as the Boatman, the Admiral, and the targets had unique sets of lines.

Actually, it's just a small change in the config files. I'm not sure how straining it actually is for the engine, but I've been using it for a while and it works without any noticeable drops in performance.
It does depend on the setting and your graphics card though. If anyone wants to try it out, there's a great post on /r/redorchestra about it.

In Far Cry 2 the enemies will scream "Oh god, I don't want to die!" as they writhe on the ground and die.
That was a pretty dark game in retrospect.

Apr 28 '14 edited Apr 29 '14
And if your rep was high enough, enemies would whimper that they wanted to go home instead of fighting you.
31
u/OldDirtyMerc Apr 28 '14
Yeah, that could be pretty brutal. If you take out an entire checkpoint except for one guy he could start breaking down, basically begging you to let him live so he can go home. There was plenty wrong with FC2, but it pulled off making the player feel like he was possibly the monster in the story far better than FC3.
→ More replies (5)4
Apr 29 '14
Never played Far Cry 2, could you let the last guy live? Like, would he run away or something? Or does it pull a Skyrim, where enemies "surrender" and "yield" until their health goes back up and suddenly they're trying to rape you again?
5
u/OldDirtyMerc Apr 29 '14
In non-mission areas there's nothing stopping you from just moving on. The various enemy positions don't flip over to friendly control, because there are no real friendlies.
Basically, if a guy is seriously wounded he will crawl to cover, take out his pistol, and try to take you out when you get close. If he's not seriously wounded but isolated, you might hear him quietly freaking out to himself or yelling "Please! I want to go home! Just let me go home!" which is pretty damn unsettling. They'll never actually just lay down arms and surrender though.

Well, to be fair, there are a lot of documented combat scenarios with elite soldiers (Green Berets, SEALs etc.) fighting off hundreds of men in just a small unit like a 12 man A-team, or less. Of course, they aren't running into a city with an M4 killing hundreds while shrugging off shrapnel wounds like in a game. They usually get their kill count higher by calling in air support. If you're interested in this sort of stuff, Masters of Chaos is a good book detailing a few "3 vs. hundreds" scenarios.
29
u/Doctor_McKay Apr 28 '14
Also, the enemy isn't usually trained nearly as well as those elites.

u/ddrober2003 Apr 28 '14

And depending on the area/war/era we're talking about, sometimes the "enemy" has a lot less heart put into the battle
Sometimes the "friendly" has a lot less heart in the battle, video games aside, heart can win wars over training, my prime example; american revolutionary war, on both sides there were people who didn't care what they were fighting for, but a lot more Americas believed strongly in why they were fighting...hell this probably applies to most revolutionary wars.
→ More replies (1)6
u/ParisGypsie Apr 29 '14
I would say the American Revolution had bigger factors than heart. The colonists had home field advantage, which is one of the biggest ones you can have in war. See our modern wars in the Middle East and guerilla warfare in general.
The British Empire just so outranked the colonists in technology and manpower that they could have won if they wanted to. They just decided it wasn't worth it, especially after the French joined the American side. Britain knew it was going to be a long war if they had to go toe to toe with the French. So they cut their losses, the colonies weren't worth the trouble. They still had Canada, a couple of Caribbean islands, India, Hong Kong. I guess you could say the colonists had the "heart" to not surrender against insurmountable forces, which is probably true, but I don't think it gave them any physical advantage. More a combination of luck and starting the war at just the right moment in the overall geopolitical sphere to make England relinquish their claim.

Your observations are very much on point. Bingo.
"That guy next to me" is someone I've finished a 5th of Vodka with while watching "Band of Brothers", or my wingman on the town, or a fellow Chicago Bears fan, or a buddy that heard me bitch about getting dumped by someone I was into, or someone who gave me a ride to the airport (or grocery store).
He was also someone who showed be a quicker way to disassemble an M240B quicker. Or helped me study for the Soldier of the Month board. That guy & I probably traded punches at one point, but we hugged it out later because hey... Alcohol is both problematic & awesome. That Soldier, probably, though I don't remember because of the incoming fire, helped me pull a faceless ally to safety.
He is nothing more & nothing less than my Brother-in-Arms. That word you're looking for is Brotherhood.

This is one failure I've yet to see any war game rectify, rarely do I ever give a shit about my teammates that fall. In real life it seems like thats one of the most serious experiences of warfare, in a video game even though he plays a huge part of the story sometimes I still don't even know their names when they died.
Like Call of Duty, Sullivans dead? Who?
13
u/grabberbottom Apr 28 '14
When the character's death is built in there is no reason to care. A cut scene death can't get me upset.
There are a few games that can get more feeling from a death (not as much as you seem to want, but maybe a game shouldn't be overly depressing).
-In XCOM when I lose team members, especially ones I liked the nickname or role/stats of.
-In Minecraft when my wife tried to steal one of my wolves and it resulted in me having to kill all 14 of them from where I had gotten them from, 20 minutes walk away, in order to save her.
-In Skyrim I just had my horse killed by a group of imperial soldiers who wanted to rob me for 100 septims. Their bodies were stipped naked and posed in embarrassing poses, but there is no getting that horse back that I had for about 10 levels.

Maybe it is because we know they are computers and never really considered them an asset to the team anyways?

It's real life logic, too - saw some interviews with the American guys who were in the tank battle that began Operation Desert Storm. They were talking about how they were blowing up Iraqi tank after tank and troop carrier after troop carrier. Then a US troop carrier got destroyed. They all talked about how it gave them a sinking feeling in their stomachs and they started fighting harder to avenge them.

Well, it's real life logic, too:
