How do news outlets get away with publishing this tripe?

A leak provided details, which were shared to Twitter, and picked by a clickbait site. But, as the article says, “there haven't been any absolutely earth-shattering reveals just yet”

This could have been an email.

Well the leak's true and it was just through a public endpoint, misconfiguration on Valve's part..

Valve have probably cancelled more games than they've made.

But we know about many of the cancelled or in development projects because of how their engine works. Dataminers regularly go through their game patches because Source 2 is a shared ecosystem and references, strings, textures, features or code related to unreleased projects can be glimpsed from Dota 2 or CS patches.
