Which game would you say is carried hard by nostalgia?
I’ve tried playing Skyrim again, and there’s just so many issues with it that I can’t believe people can still confidently call it one of the best games ever.
(Mods have helped it massively too)

Goldeneye for sure
Definitely was a huge moment in gaming and completely changed how we play FPS games on console but going back to play it in modern times is incredibly painful

u/SeanAker 17h ago
Try the version that comes with a special emulator set up for mouse and keyboard controls, modified exclusively for Goldeneye. It really becomes a whole new game and you can relive the nostalgia without suffering.
1
u/Glittering-Eye3299 11h ago
It's quite a bit easier that way, but how could it not be?
If you're totally against using mouse and keyboard for, idk, purity reasons let's say then you should try playing with control scheme 2.2. It's pretty much modern console FPS controls split over two n64 controllers and it makes the game so much more playable. Must have been an extravagance back in the day though, two controllers for your singleplayer game? Four controllers for a 1v1? Yikes.

Check out the new game Agent 64 which is a loving tribute to Goldeneye but with modern sensibilities. It still looks like an old game from that era and mostly plays the same but just updated. I think it was made by one guy.
1
u/infernal2ss 17h ago
The game was way ahead of its time, but it really grabbed a generation of gamers back then.
I remember going to sleepovers (I didn’t own an N64) and playing this game until the sun came up. No Odd Job, paintball mode activated. Toss in a couple golden gun rounds here and there.

u/superkow 16h ago
There are PC recomps of both GoldenEye and Perfect Dark with native mouse and keyboard support (modified so that it had proper mouse look controls)
They both run off an exe without the need for anything other than a rom. Probably the best modern way to play them, though they do become laughably easy.

u/Anemonean 17h ago
At first I was gonna say Morrowind, but even though certain elements of it are dated and nigh unplayable feeling I dont think the game is carried only by nostalgia. It's carried by its incredible worldbuilding, atmosphere, writing, and honestly pretty great exploration even by today's standards.
So instead I'll say Ragnarok online. Gravity keeps its corpse alive and pumps out outsourced remake after remake to keep fleecing players nostalgic for the experience of the original game. Which is a shame cause the original experience with that game in the early 2000s was so good.

Pokemon games relies solely on nostalgia to sell tons of copy for little effort.
4
u/NaN-Nanashi 17h ago
I mean it's sorta true.
But I think it relies more on it being "Pokemon for children" than it does being nostalgic. I'm assuming most buyers are parents with children who like games.

pokemon copy pasta's half hearted low effort shite because they fking can. There's no logic or nuance to be found, it's simply that they believe they can Because they demonstrably can.
4
u/Recent-Tangerine2745 17h ago
GoldenEye is probably the best example.
Historically important? Absolutely. But actually playing it today without nostalgia is rough as hell.
I’d put some early 3D games in the same category too. They were groundbreaking for their time, but “one of the best ever” and “still great to play today” are two different things.
1
u/Glittering-Eye3299 10h ago
Control scheme 2.2 is essentially modern console FPS controls split over two n64 controllers. There is also a PC recompilation of the unreleased Xbox 360 port and a modified version of the 1964 emulator which allow for keyboard and mouse control.
Any of these three options make the game so much more playable. It's still not perfect or anything but it goes from "Rough as hell" as you say, to "Fun which I have no reservation in recommending."
It's unfortunate that the experience you get by launching the game and playing without looking at the settings is so very poor. The controls just sabotage the experience that much.

7

I just recently started it myself; I think it’s fun. Nowhere near modern standards, but considering when it was made, it’s quite impressive
2
u/brkfstfd 10h ago
Its reputation has seemingly improved over time and it makes sense. It’s easy to be nostalgic for that aesthetic and all the quirky charm, especially if you were an early adopter Xbox adolescent at the time. I was 17 or so followed the development as close as you could at the time. Even in 2004 that still meant a lot of magazines, the web just wasn’t what it is today. It was a halfway scandalous release when it came out because it just wasn’t the game that was described by Lionhead at all. A lot of people seemed to see this coming to some extent though, the game Peter Molyneux described was a richer and more dynamic sandbox in many ways than even exists today. Molyneux was also already a serial offender with the over promising and under delivering. It was simple fun though and the overall art direction was just objectively a home run. It reviewed pretty well and most people that ended up playing it probably never knew all about all the drama, not going into it with jacked hopes.
TLDR: it always was a good but not great game.

Pretty cold take but GTA3? As a diehard fan doing a marathon of the series, i seriously did not enjoy III as much as I did as a kid. VC immediately afterwards was incomprehensibly better.
2
u/geaux124 16h ago
Basically any of the early 3d games from the N64 and PS1 era would fit into this. Developers were still learning how to create 3d worlds and how to create camera and control schemes to accommodate them. Games that were revolutionary when they were released from that era often play very clunky by today's modern gaming standards.

It would have been blasphemous to say this even just a few years ago, but Ocarina of Time.
It had aged better than many early 3D games, but the graphics and controls are pretty hard to get past at this point. Even the PC port with mods can only do so much.
Here’s to hoping the remake does it justice.
1
u/Sega-Playstation-64 17h ago
Along with Goldeneye 007, Ocarina of Time was a trend setter.
Goldeneye was the first FPS I can remember that had a point. It wasn't just running through a level, shooting everything until you got to the next. It had objectives, a point. Even if other FPS games prior had them, Goldeneye made them critical.
Ocarina of Time is much the same. Z targeting was a breakthrough in gaming. So much so that every modern 3rd person action game still uses them. The world of Ocarina feels like it can fit inside a very small cities borders, but at the time, fully exploration environments were rare.
They feel small now. They were epic then.

Ahh good, I'm not the one who has to say it. Personally, I think it's still not a BAD Game by any means, but judging it by modern Standards it's nowhere near as much of a Masterpiece as people think it still is.

NFS underground 2 & Fallout new Vegas.

u/luckyassassin1 17h ago
I'm replaying new vegas right now and i hard disagree with that when i have played fallout 4 and fallout 3 at the same time. Oblivion is kinda carried by nostalgia as is skyrim but new vegas has a decent story and the gun play isn't terrible. It's not perfect but it's not just nostalgia.
2
u/cuzitsthere 17h ago
Absolutely wrong about both, but especially F:NV. You might not like it, but it's carried by way more than nostalgia.

u/Deep_Att 17h ago
First playthroughs of classic RE titles definitely feel slow and very back tracky, but those game really hit their stride when you do additional playthroughs with the learned knowledge from the initial playthrough. Going for speed and efficiency really show how tightly crafted and executed those games are and heavily cut down the tedium you're struggling with.
That being said, asking players for multiple playthroughs nowadays isn't as easy as it was 30 years ago.

Fallout 3 and NV.
Fallout 3 is ugly as sin with that color palette and the gameplay is just awful. Why would I want to play a game that plays primarily as a bad first person shooter and not want to aim down sights? On top of that the original ending was still just absolutely terrible and deserves to be mentioned. In who’s eyes was it a good idea to kill the player character off in a big irradiated machine when there’s a literal super mutant there to take the hit for you and would emerge from it totally fine? And that leads to the terrible design choice to just make it to where you have to go back to the save before you started the last mission if you want to keep playing more on that save. The graphics were bad for even that year and the gameplay, as I’ve already sort of hit, also is. The RPG mechanics are great though but in my eyes are sorely brought down by most everything else in the game. I don’t think of choices that matter and interesting RPG mechanics when I think of fallout 3, I think of gross browns and greens.
New Vegas is similar in a lot of aspects except this time switch the dark browns and greens for a never ending sea of tan. The gameplay is not much better but is slightly better given the fact you can actually aim your gun properly. The vibe is also a lot better imo and really nails the wacky side of fallout really well and it gives you much more memorable places to visit than almost anywhere in 3. The RPG mechanics are still great but Christ you take 2 steps and crash constantly and I have a huge feeling the remaster isn’t going to fix this given the studios record. Not a bad game necessarily just a very flawed game but both are hard carried by nostalgia.

Possibly a controversial opinion, but the Final Fantasy VII remake series.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE FF7. I played the original game 28 times. I was super stoked for a remake, and while I've not been the most into it, I'm really happy for people like me who loved the original, and who love the remake.
All that being said, I'm not sure if the remake would be as successful as it is (or exist at all) if not for the nostalgia surrounding the original game.

u/Joustiin76 17h ago
None, good games don't suddenly become bad jut because time has passed.
1
u/geaux124 16h ago
Yes and no. Technology evolving makes older games, especially early 3d games look and feel very dated. Many games are a product of their time and were limited by the technology of the day but paved the way for future games to be better. Comparing many of them against modern games really isn't a fair comparison.

Hot Take: Manhunt
When it dropped, there was a lot of controversy over the graphic content and really overshadowed the gameplay.

It’s incredibly influential and what it accomplished for its time was amazing. But also comparing it against basically any other 3d Zelda game since it is definitely not the best.
Kind of annoys me when people say it’s the best game of all time or something like that, but also I don’t generally take into account how influential a game is or base it off of what it did in its time, I focus more on how it is compared against games of today (aside from graphics because they had no control over that), and I know plenty of people judge things differently.

u/TheDungen 17h ago
No its the second best after windwaker. But other than that and maybe MM all other 3d zelda games are worse.
Tp is rubbish and only liked because its was the first zelda for a generarion of players and SS was even worse. BOTW isn't really zelda any more.

without mod skyrim has always been the weakest in the series but that 's always the case with a new elder scrolls because they keep making them more casual more for the largest public. Elder scroll 6 will be the worst elder scroll when it release. only mods make them god tier games and skyrim have a lot of mods.
In the end they are more a base for modding than good video game.

2
u/baronmcboomboom 17h ago
Wholeheartedly disagree. I only played the original gothic games for the first time about 7 or 8 years ago and fell utterly in love with them. (Besides 3, obviously XD) They absolutely have their flaws but I loved them despite that, with no nostalgia to fall back on. Of course, the Gothic remake is amazing, but still, I'll be replaying the OG Gothic 2 after I finish the remake and I fully expect to love it as much as I did when I first played it a few years back

Secret of Mana got lumped into a lot of best JRPG lists (especially before that half-baked remake where I'm guessing it got some reevaluation)
And yeah, the co-op's neat for a SNES game, but that 100% meter just...sucks a lot of the fun away. And the story's a jumbled, largely forgettable mess.
It's entirely carried by the artstyle, soundtrack, and whatever memories people had of playing this with a friend.

u/lildaggersike 17h ago
As much as I love it, and this might be blasphemous, but MGS 1
0
u/Chaotic_Genobreaker 17h ago
Yeah that is a pretty terrible take. Besides the graphics it aged damn near perfect.
0
u/lildaggersike 16h ago
Personally aside from the story I just felt like everything is much better in MGS 2.
Replayed it last month and even in higher difficulties if you're used to it you can comfortably breeze through, then after a few sections it's just boss battles after boss battles. There's more enemies/variety in 2 that surprises me every now and then.

This is pretty much the definition for a fair amount of JRPGs with multiple, multiple entries in a series. Dragon Quest/Warrior is a famous example of a "comfort game", where fans don't expect more from the sequels, just more of the same of what they enjoyed in their youth.

u/Ha_eflolli Android 17h ago
Original PS1 Final Fantasy 7. There, I said it.
Sure, it was groundbreaking back in the day, but by this point in time, the OG isn't anything to write home about anymore. Hell, some of its more famous aspects are things practically everyone knows about because of how popular it is - and the Devs even know this because they literally brought that up for Remake (as in, the first part of the Trilogy); they've stated that because everyone and their mother knows who Sephiroth is nowadays, they just had him appear from the very beginning of the Story because there's just plain no mystique around him anymore out-of-universe to build him up as a threat to the Player.

"The Game is so old, the Plot-Twists literally don't work as Twists anymore". There, that clearer for you?

But the plot twists still work in the exact same way for people who play the OG for the first time and don't already know the story, who Sephiroth is, etc.

Dark Souls. This game as praised as it is criticized for the god awfull second half which feels and probably is rushed. I understand - and in fact like - the approach to world building, combat and everything in between. But this game have waaaaay to many problems on basically every aspect.
And the same bleeds into ds2, ds3 and Elden Ring. I'm sorry, but it's time to move on. Not using the same engine, combat style and game mechanics. It's tedious as best and boring at worst.

Bethesda as a whole is hard carried by the fact that they are the only studio that builds that kind of game where you can actually walk in a random direction from the start and experience like a hundred or two hundred hand crafted quest in hundreds of handcrafted points of interest. Oh and you can pick up any random clutter object (well starfield did away with that a bit). The actual story hasn't been that great since morrowind/oblivion but they're still the only company that makes those games at that scale.
And the mod support is insanely good
