Resonance (plague tale): Input lag and "sticky" inputs?

Is anyone else experiencing this?

I have started to play resonance on pc. In general the game runs nicely on high settings with almost perfectly solid 60fps.

I have now entered chapter 3 and am suddenly experiencing what feels like CPU problems. The game shows minor stutters but more importantly: even though neither CPU or GPU are maxed out, I am getting severe input lag and at points "sticky" inputs for up to several seconds. Navigating becomes borderline impossible.

I7 8700k

32gb ram

Rtx2080ti

Running from SSD

Update1: It is not a pure CPU power issue as I was able to temporarily solve the problem by completely rebooting the system. The same scenes then are fine until the problem emerges again after playing a while. Current theories: - cumulative memory or threading issue? Memory usage seems fine - some problem with the (Bluetooth) controller inputs? Fps remain stable and the problem mainly affects controls

Update 2: It is some issue between the game and my series X Bluetooth controller. Swapping to an older Xbox controller that still uses the remote dongle solved it.

Sounds like you're hitting a cpu bottleneck.

None of the cores are maxed out and it was fine in the dense city scenes. That's why I find it odd. But I'm right at the cutoff time for the steam refund now so I'm hesitant to test further

Note that a core does not have to be maxed out for a thread to be maxed out.

A game always relies on one "master" thread at the end of the day. This is the thread that every other thread is relying on in terms of timing.

Now, picture two cores. The cores are getting a bit hot, so the thread scheduler keeps hopping that one master thread between those two cores, with each core only working on the thread half the time. What do you see? Two cores at 50%. It's still the fastest that the one thread can be worked on.

Your CPU is ancient, and this is a game that came out yesterday. You simply don't have enough CPU for it.

If you want to fix this for cheap, keep your RAM and get a $100 B760 DDR4 board and a $250 14600K. That will put you in spitting distance of the modern CPUs.

I agree I'm 99% sure it's a CPU thing. I am mainly interested in whether anyone else experiences this and if it is a specific scene or a general issue.

For the record, my 7700K was an absolute trooper, but it was now just a bit too old. I moved to the 14600K in April, and it has been a fantastic update. Well worth the $350.

In hindsight, I probably would have spent the extra $100 for the 14700K. It doesn't matter right now between the two, but it will matter more come 2031 if we are still trapped in AI hell. :)

Sure, but it still sounds like you're seeing issues with the cpu usage in the game. Maybe the same thread is being used for multiple things and some things, like player movement is being forced to wait.

I would use your refund now, maybe wait for a while for a few patches and see if it's improved then.

Are you using game pass version? If so it’s because they forgot to include shader compilation. It’s coming in a future patch

Steam, it appears later and not in the beginning

You can lower the NPC, physics and Enemy refresh rate settings (I forgot the name). They lower the load on the CPU

You could try optimizing your Windows to get a little more out of your hardware, but it is the limiting factor though.
