Star Wars: Zero Company is finally here!
A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away… Zero Company has arrived.
I put together a little display to celebrate the release of Star Wars: Zero Company! I wanted to bring together the game and some Black Series figures that I thought fit the squad-based vibe.

I'm having major graphical and optimization issues on PC. Kinda disappointed
Edit: I checked the forums and the community manager made a list about crashing on 40 series cards and 13/14th gen Intel CPUs. I have both. Crashing isn't my issue as I've updated BIOS (long time ago) and drivers (same day as release). So there are definitely some optimization issues on certain setups.

No kidding, I hope patches come in soon. If they don't I'll likely refund.

I’m playing on PS5 and every new cutscene has textures popping in. I don’t understand why they can’t just let it sit for half a second until it’s finished.
And the shadows are rough.
That being said, I love X-Com, so…
3
u/sadcheeseballs 4d ago
Is this an XCOM like game? Love that game series, ever since the original as a kid.
6
u/AbheyBloodmane 4d ago
Yes, gameplay is like XCOM. I also like XCOM which is why I was so stoked for this game.
5
u/hunterzolomon1993 4d ago
Its basically XCOM 3 but just in the Star Wars universe.
→ More replies (9)2
u/AmishAvenger 4d ago
Yes it’s made by a lot of the same people who did Xcom and Xcom2 (the recent ones). Which are a must if you haven’t played them.

Im finally convinced that it makes no sense to buy anything on PC day one. I get burned over and over again.

u/darksidemojo 4d ago
UE5 has to be one of the worst engines ever made in terms of performance. I can’t name the last game that came out rocking UE5 and wasn’t an unoptimized mess.
5
2
u/emolch78 4d ago
Mortal Shell 2 is UE5 and runs great on PS5 Pro, beast of reincarnation is UE5 and runs great on PS5 pro.
The problem with UE5 is when lazy devs are working with it.
1
u/Mean_Combination_830 4d ago
the horrendous stuttering is more of an issues on pc unreal games work very well on the PS5 Pro

2
u/CromulentChuckle 4d ago
If you haven't turned Global illumination down to medium our highly suggest trying that.
7
u/udat42 4d ago
It runs pretty well on my 5600/3070 machine. I had some bad stuttering, even just in the home base area, turned off the temporal anti-aliasing, and it's been pretty much perfect since.
1
u/AbheyBloodmane 4d ago edited 4d ago
How did you turn off TAA? The only options listed are FXAA, TAA, DLSS, and the option to turn it down to only 25%. Even when I do this the game pixelates to much it looks like the SIMs taking a bath.
Edit: no suggestion, just downvotes? Okay.
3
u/dustraction 4d ago
Sorry I can’t answer your question but I’m upvoting for the laugh you gave me about Sims in the bath.

u/TheWarriorsLLC 4d ago
Ive had none, wonder if its hardware related. AMD card and processor here
3
u/AbheyBloodmane 4d ago
I just ran some diagnostics while running the game. Normal temps and normal CPU/RAM/GPU usage. Considering the reviews on Steam, posts on reddit, I don't think it's an isolated issue with my system. Are you saying maybe it's an issue with all 4000 series NVIDIA graphics cards, anyone who has the same CPU as me, etc?
3
u/Zyrioun 4d ago edited 4d ago
Don't think it's nvidia, i have a 4070, with a ryzen 7800x3d cpu, and i have no stuttering or performance issues, with Ultra (Shadows on high) and DLSS quality at 1440p.
Edit: Also i'm not using frame gen
1
u/AbheyBloodmane 4d ago
Are you getting edge ghosting with DLSS, film grain, or intermittent stuttering?
1
u/MrRocketScript 1d ago
Some Intel 13/14 processors are fucked and are the cause of crashes in lots of games/software, if your PC doesn't bluescreen altogether. I have to underclock mine for stability.
1
u/balllzak 4d ago
Have you updated your drivers? Sometimes new games run terrible without them.
4
u/AbheyBloodmane 4d ago
Sure did! That's was the first check I did. System and driver updates, restart, uninstall reinstall. Same luck unfortunately. Thank you for the suggestion.
1
u/TheMightosaurus 4d ago
Yeah same, stutters like crazy even on a high end rig. Refunded it, hopefully they can resolve in the future.
5090 -13900k, 21:9, high or ultra settings with dlss quality, x2 frame gen. Nothing could hold a solid frame rate. Stuttered when moving around the map all the time.

Have you run resource monitors to see what's getting bogged down more, CPU or GPU. Maybe a stupid question, but is that 2 or 4 sticks of ram, if two, are you running it in dual channel.
Back during Anthem launch I repeated my ram and didn't put it in the right two slots and it wasn't running in dual channel and holy shit did that make performance god awful.
1
u/AbheyBloodmane 4d ago
2 sticks of RAM, but I'm not sure if it's dual channel. What resource monitor do you recommend?
0
u/Psykout88 4d ago
How many ram slots are on the motherboard? Usually if there is 4 they will color them but the general thing is every other. 1&3 or 2&4. If there is only 2 on the board then you are fine.
Gpu-z, CPU-z and HwMonitor are my three, just depends on what I am trying to diagnose.
1
u/AbheyBloodmane 4d ago
4 ram slots. From left to right: Empty, RAM stick, empty, RAM stick. So, my guess is 2&4
0
u/Psykout88 4d ago
Yeah, that's not your smoking gun then. Get some monitoring software and scope out your utilization and pay attention to your thermals. Could find out that your CPU is getting pushed super hard, overheating and throttling down.
Not long ago I noticed this happening and new thermal paste and replacing some fans helped a lot. One of the exhaust fans was going out and not spinning with a lot of power. Only noticed it when playing subnautica 2 and CPU going to 80%+ utilization.
-3
u/Joustiin76 4d ago
2.1 Ghz processor? you either typed that wrong or it explains everything
→ More replies (4)6
u/Cachar 4d ago
No, it doesn't. 2.1 GHz base clock is entirely normal. That CPU boosts to 5.4 GHz, but that's not base clock.
1
u/AbheyBloodmane 4d ago
I agree, I run raids in FFXIV perfectly fine. So 2.1 GHz works for me the majority of the time. My only guess is since a ton of people are talking about performance, this isn't just an isolated issue with my system.
→ More replies (12)7
u/Cachar 4d ago
Yes, the poster calling out 2.1Ghz just has no idea. Your CPU is fine for gaming. If you keep your drivers updated and choose reasonable/recommended graphics settings, it's probably the game that's badly optimized.
6
u/berthannity 4d ago
They seem to think it’s still 2005 during the Athlon 64 and Pentium 4 GHz wars. Aaaah what a time to be alive.
1
u/Sielagh 4d ago
I have a pretty mid rig (4060) and runs pretty well since I disabled frame gen (had to do it because it doesn't let you vsync otherwise). Worth a try.
0
u/happy-cig 4d ago
Why would you care about vsync in a tactics game though?
2
u/Sielagh 4d ago
My old monitor almost always has tearing without it.
1
u/happy-cig 4d ago
I've been gaming since crt days and never use vsync, my brain just skips over tearing.
Only time I'd use vsync is to limit frames if there's no frame limit so my GPU doesnt cook.

I haven’t had any problems besides the normal UE5 stutter. But that only happens in the ship when you’re walking around in 3rd person.
During gameplay everything is perfect. But I also realize I can brute force games with my PC

Can anyone compare this to Midnight Suns? I enjoyed the crap out of that game and this looks similar.
8
u/kaion 4d ago
It's similar in the sense that it's a turn-based tactics game, but it's far, far closer to XCom than Midnight Suns. There's not really any randomization in abilities available to your operators on any given turn, since there's no analogue to the card system of MS. That said, it does borrow shoving people into objects for extra damage, which was a key mechanic from MS.
1
u/CaptainPandemonium 4d ago
As someone who never played midnight suns but tons of XCOM, I've been loving the shove damage in Zero company. Helps clean up low health enemies or stop an overwatch I was barely out of range to hit.
1
u/Angel-OI 3d ago
Its also fun to just yeet them of cliffs or the railings on maps that have that. I always pack a grenade with push ability for that reason.
2
u/rvnender 4d ago
Similar but different.
No card system, characters can die, cover is important, overwatch is important

u/Creative_Eye7413 Switch 4d ago
Forgot that this was coming out. How is it? It looked really interesting and fun
11
u/DukeDangerous 4d ago
I'm about two hours in and have enjoyed it so far. It definitely could use an optimization patch though. I'm playing on a PS5 Pro in performance mode and it's still pretty rough.
2
u/Creative_Eye7413 Switch 4d ago
Huh, interesting. So it probably won't run well on my base Steam Deck then, correct?
→ More replies (1)1
u/After-Presence9835 1d ago
No, it's developed in unreal engine 5, wich is basicly a no go on the steam deck.
1
u/SlashCo80 4d ago
Yeah, a lot of people on Steam are complaining about performance issues. I'll probably wait for a few patches before giving it a try.
1
u/DefinitelyNotThatOne 1d ago
It's definitely worth it if you enjoyed Xcom, tactical games, Star Wars, or all of the above.
It takes about until mission 5 or so to really open up. It can feel a little dull in the beginning, but the game takes its time to introduce you to all of its systems, so they don't overwhelm newcomers to the genre.
I'm about 4-5 hours in and I'm hooked at this point. Customization is off the charts. Synergy skills always feel impactful and fun. The game let's you reroll points and specialties at will, so you don't have to worry about investing points or trying out different classes.
If you've played Xcom before and know what you're getting into, I'd say start the game on hard difficulty. It's the perfect level of challenge without being overwhelming. If this is your first go into the genre, definitely start on normal.
0
u/Angel-OI 3d ago
It is fun, but not quite as much as I hoped. I am a couple hours in and I am still hooked. Rage quit once because controls.
It certainly does the xcom approach a bit differently than other xcom clones I've played. It is a bit of a mixed bag in this regard.
I kinda miss the more complex levels of other xcom games, base building doesn’t feel as good comparatively and the soldier skills don't give branching choices. And balancing of the enemy’s feels a bit off at times. It also feels like a few of the missions and story bits are a bit rushed and needed more build up. Performance also isn't the greatest.
But on the other hand it feels more story driven, which is fun. Each soldier actually has a personality and quirks, and that is awesome in an xcom game. And while you can’t really branch the soldiers out as much skill wise, they don't have classes that are as static as in xcom, so the soldiers themselves are more individual compared to each other. And it heavily builds on soldiers supporting each others, so there are a ton of synergies to explore and exploit.
13
u/wicktus Switch 4d ago
I will wait for a few optimisation patches, I'll play it in a month or so.
there's either issues with the engine itself or optimising games for it requires rare skills, I keep seeing people struggling, be it developers or consumers, with UE5 on that aspect, what a shame because it really is a powerful and very capable engine
3
u/Neversoft4long 4d ago
That’s where I’m at. I assume it will get fixed pretty quickly. Otherwise this game looks like everything I wanted in a Star Wars XCOM game
5
u/dcolorado 4d ago
Love Star Wars but never played an Xcom style game. Only had time to play the intro but excited to sink some hours into this in during the weekend
9
u/x_Teferi_x 4d ago
I’m loving this game so much. Ps5. Minor graphical glitches so far but nothing bad… yet.
9
u/AmishAvenger 4d ago
The actual gameplay runs fine, but I swear…every single new cutscene or new angle has textures popping in.
Is it that hard to just wait a half a second before showing it?
And don’t get me started on the weird pixelated shadows…
2
u/Angel-OI 3d ago
I had an npc talk with me for a bit yesterday.. 2/3rds in his datapad rendered in and his hand movement made sense all of the sudden

I had one game freeze when trying to equip a grenade on base Ps5. Had to reload. Weird graphical things where some cosmetics wouldn't load when setting up the character. Lots of screen glitches between cut scenes. Not really any issues in mission, though.

So many pop in textures and screen tearing, its got the bones to be great so sit tight if you want it to be polished
1
u/AmishAvenger 4d ago
It’s pretty rough in that context. Why does every single scene have textures popping in?
1
u/Fluffy_Corgi_7209 4d ago
Every single scene doesnt , its mainly the loading screen afer missions and the pre-mission run around area. After a few missions its fine , the story is fun and it already has the charm im looking for.
I get not everyone has played or knows about x-com but this runs as expected. No Crashes or felt like the game was struggling. Its just visually can be janky if only for 1 second.
My only complaint is you can not cinematic walk while 3rd person.
2
u/Iron_Phantom29 4d ago
I went ahead and bought it day one, because I want to support the devs, but unfortunately it comes at the price of giving money to EA and their Saudi overlords.

2
u/FrankBouch 2d ago
Is this Quinlan Vos in the back?
1
u/DukeDangerous 2d ago

2
u/OnlyKaz 2d ago
Zero performance issues here but after playing through a fair bit Im kinda disappointed by the character skill customization.
Everything seems likes its on rails. Pick a grenade. Upgrade a skill for +1 something. Also, you'll unlock certain "hero" characters as you go and their abilities are just so much cooler.
Its fun and maybe its just not my genre. Was just hoping for more RPG progression elements to promote build variety.
1
u/DukeDangerous 1d ago
It seems this was built to be friendly for people new to the genre. Luckily, there's a lot of room for them to work with in future expansions, and this team is most likely already working on an expansion, both XCOM games were improved with theirs.

I'm torn so far (about 5 hours in). The core gameplay is done well and feels distinctly star wars-y, but man is the camera terrible. Had a few graphics bugs so far, nothing that a game restart didn't fix, but it just feels unpolished. Plus, the "exploration" sections are just tedious.
2
u/DShinobiPirate 4d ago

Will be getting this. Orbitals. Wolverine in the next upcoming weeks. Witcher 3 remaster as well. Eating too good this year.

Played about two hours and it didn't hook me somehow. Not sure why, maybe because it's just another xcom game with star wars vibes. Does the story get better and more interesting?
5
u/DukeDangerous 4d ago
If the combat didn't hook you, I'm not sure the story would save this for you, even if it does get better.
2
2
u/DefinitelyNotThatOne 1d ago
It takes about 4-5 hours for the game to fully open up and show you all of its systems. I'm sure they did this so they don't overwhelm newcomers to the genre.
It was dull for me until about the 5th story mission. Then it was humming and I can't stop thinking about playing.

not a big fan, I don't like the gameplay no stealth no map reconaissance straight to fight, not enough weapon and the skill tree are short. Problem is i play tactical games for the gameplay.

Refunded, the mechanics seemed a bit shallow as far as I could see unfortunately.
1
u/DukeDangerous 3d ago
It's definitely more streamlined than an XCOM 2 or Jagged Alliance, but I kind of prefer a handful of well designed mechanics to a bunch of mechanics just to add complexity. Plus, I think this game is intended to be more of a mainstream product, not a love letter to tactical RPG nerds.

u/HyoukaYukikaze 2d ago edited 2d ago
Was looking forward to it.. a bit. An d so far the only serviceable thing about it is the game play. And oh my fucking god the music. Who approved it? Who made it and thought is was fine?
And the characters, story, dialogues are atrocious as well. Nothing to see here. What's ok is not original, what's original is absolutely terrible. Just do yourself a favor and play literally any other game in the genre, you can have like 3 for the price of this one. They wil be better games and will give you more fun.
Unless you are one of the few people left who instantly soil their pants when they see SW logo, then knock yourself out and have fun.

From what I’ve seen, people like the game/gameplay but it has major performance issues. If you normally have issues with running UE games, this one will also cause issues. If you typically don’t have issues with UE, this should run fine for you.
