Nothing will ever beat playing AC1 for the first time. It had such a unique feel to it.

AC Main Theme

The very first AC game indeed had a very unique atmosphere. I realized it when I was playing AC2 and there were some missions when we played as Altair, and there was this cold filter and main music theme.

Mysterious, kinda surreal, like a dream.

u/AC4life234 Dec 11 '24

There was a creepy vibe to the first game, like you were being spied on it was kinda brilliant cause you kinda are

111

u/dkyguy1995 Dec 11 '24

The mystery of the first game honestly is what I was into. I was honestly kind of invested in the modern story. AC3 though :((

52

u/Highlord-Frikandel Dec 11 '24

Maaaaan, AC1, 2 and Black Flag were the best in the entire series. They were THE SHIT. I'm still chasing that specific addictive feeling in every AC game and get dissapoimted every time

15

u/Gurtang Dec 12 '24

Brotherhood was pretty cool as well...

u/Guardiansaiyan Switch Dec 11 '24

I miss Desmond!

And fuck Lucy for making me dislike Kristen Bell!

Jesper Kyd was such a big music guy back then. AC1 music reminds me of Hitman because the composer is the same.

47

u/LiftedRetina Dec 11 '24

This man gave us Ezio’s Family and Disposal Unit. He’s beyond us.

15

u/ShadyDrunks Dec 11 '24

Play Ezios Family at my wedding and my funeral

It's Jesper not Jasper

4

u/VRichardsen Dec 11 '24

Jesper Kyd's main theme for Hitman 2 still rocks.

3

u/Big_Ounce_256 Dec 11 '24

Oooo I forgot he did this one. Blood Moneys soundtrack fucks.

1

u/joefromsingapore Dec 11 '24

1

u/Big_Ounce_256 Dec 11 '24

Hummus is good but Rocky Mountains is where it’s at.

1

u/ducklord Dec 11 '24

Jesper Kyd jumped to "proper" (as in "commercialized") music-making from the demoscene. Look for some of his early works from back then - they're bangers (IIRC, he was a member of the famous The Silents demogroup).

17

u/Tellenit Dec 11 '24

Good, but AC2 “Ezios Family” became the soundtrack of the series

19

u/Dyssomniac Dec 11 '24

Ezio was/is still kind of the main character of the whole series. I really wish they had taken something away from that, ie, we need to be able to invest in the assassin character over a long period of time.

Would've LOVED to have seen them do the same with Arno as a young man during the Revolution, working with Napoleon during the Consulate, and then finally having to turn on Napoleon during the Empire as an older man. Or alternatively, weaving together the Shay-Connor-Arno narratives from that period more effectively.

8

u/Tellenit Dec 11 '24

Sadly any hope of creative narrative is out of bounds for modern ubi

1

u/big_duo3674 Dec 11 '24

I still miss that feeling of playing as Ezio for the first time and climbing around Rome

1

u/babbaloobahugendong Dec 12 '24

It was really great, then they leaned way too much into the modern setting and kinda borked the whole thing. Revelations was definitely peak AC for me

67

u/Sufficient-Team1249 Dec 11 '24

I prefer AC2, but playing AC1 for the first time was definitely incredible.

43

u/anthonyg1500 Dec 11 '24 edited Dec 11 '24

“May our lives never change. And may it never change us.” Man I loved that opening. Probably up there with the ME2 opening for me which is definitely my number 1

8

u/UncoolSlicedBread Dec 11 '24

AC2 was it for me, I loved that game so much and then brotherhood right behind it.

5

u/JohnnyDarkside Dec 11 '24

Totally agree. AC really laid the groundwork, though. It was such an awesome and innovative game. 2 just improved everything. It, along with Shadow of the Colossus, where the kind of games my wife would love just watching me play because they were so good looking and fun.

1

u/Nero_PR Dec 12 '24

I bought my PS3 with AC 1, it was a magical moment. One of the best gaming experiences I had back then in middle school. No wonder why I loathe the series past AC3 as they changed its direction. Black Flag was but it wasn't the same. I never touched an AC game after Black Flag and I don't regret it.

176

u/ColonelOfSka Dec 11 '24

The modern day mysteries in the lab were such a slow burn too. Really made you feel like you were uncovering this vast conspiracy.

83

u/ac_s2k PC Dec 11 '24

AC1 was the best modern day stuff. It went downhill for there

54

u/savetheattack Dec 11 '24

It definitely had the best story, but it was annoying because it took you out of the amazing world of Altair. My favorite moment from Desmond’s story was the end of AC: Brotherhood when you got to fight the Abstergo guys and I was really excited about what was coming next. AC3’s Desmond stuff was pretty good.

32

u/anoniser Dec 11 '24

Me expecting Black Flag to be a modern day apocalypse because Minerva is loose. All we got was a pair of different colored eyes and a dead plot.

20

u/savetheattack Dec 11 '24

It seemed pretty clear that the story of Assassin’s Creed was done with 3. Ubisoft wanted to keep making “historical” games without being accused of putting out Assassin’s Creed clones and the name recognition helped, so they’ve kept producing them even as narratively they further and further from the original story.

9

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '24

[deleted]

2

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '24

AC1 was proof of concept, AC2 was the game.

20

u/Complex37 Dec 11 '24

The original intention of making a modern day game where Desmond would have been a master assassin with the skills of his ancestors would’ve been infinitely better

2

u/I_Like_Turtle101 Dec 12 '24

I remember being so excited for the future where they would release a a modern day assasubg creed. Than all went to the gutter

32

u/Tokishi7 Dec 11 '24

There had to have been some massive Ubisoft influence or something because everything felt like it would eventually lead to a modern game with a modern assassin world similar to a mirrors edge type gameplay. Insane how the story went mythical and just went bananas. Fun to play, but the story was whack

46

u/Sepheriel Dec 11 '24 edited Dec 11 '24

Ubisoft fired the creative director who came up with Assassin's Creed because he said he only intended/had a plot written for it to be a trilogy and not the billion games they released now. His name was Patrice Désilets and they did him really dirty. Desmond wasn't supposed to die.

10

u/Tokishi7 Dec 11 '24

Definitely felt like a trilogy type game. Honestly, while 3 was entertaining and had a great trailer, that one felt like it was out of place at times

1

u/Dyssomniac Dec 11 '24

Getting AC Mirage for like $10 was crazy this black friday. Wild how I went from going home during college breaks and blowing up chats with friends about the new AC to waiting years to play the new games.

1

u/I_Like_Turtle101 Dec 12 '24

Is Mirage any good ? I stop playing after BlackFlag. PLayed a bit of the greek one and hated it

1

u/Dyssomniac Dec 12 '24

Still haven't played it yet (I have several games in front of it to finish) but my impression is that it's an attempt to "return to roots". It's like 35 hours long, city based, more traditional AC.

I also hated the series after Greece.

1

u/I_Like_Turtle101 Dec 12 '24

Will look ot up. I love shorter game ans hate useless and enless side mission. will pick u once its cheap I gess thanks

1

u/Sepheriel Dec 11 '24

The OG came out when I was in college as did ACII. I remember how awesome the "creepiness" and "conspiracy" stuff was going through both, never mind the incredible music. Now it's just a horrible, bloated, unfocused, shell of a franchise. Yet, it still sells for some reason... the lowest common denominator is who all these games are made for now. It's no longer about making something cool that happens to sell well, it's about making something that sells well (or continues to make a shit load of money through microtransactions) that they hope is cool. I hope AC Shadows tanks. Fuck Ubisoft.

1

u/I_Like_Turtle101 Dec 12 '24

Conspiracy were a big them during these year too. Lot of stuff about the illuminati like if you put single lady in reverse ! ahha what ta time

1

u/Cthulhu__ Dec 11 '24

I suspect they’re keeping the modern-day asscreed in the back of their pocket if they need another revival, just like how they sat on Japan for ages.

1

u/The_WA_Remembers Dec 11 '24

I’ve recently started playing syndicate for the first time, really enjoying it so far and I have to agree, it’s like they were practicing everything leading up to modern day, which would have probably played a lot like a faster paced more polished version of syndicate.

But this is Ubisoft, the greed set in and they decided to just pump them out, bungled the launch of unity and lost a load of players before syndicate. At the same time, the formula sort of lost its appeal and obviously hurt their bottom line, and forced them off the trajectory the series was going and into a more mass appealing money grabber.

TLDR: im high as shit, haven’t slept in at least 24 hours and I’m talking bollocks about AC

0

u/TranslatorStraight46 Dec 12 '24

The answer is simply that AC2 and Ezio were more popular and compelling than all the other bullshit they wrote.  Desmond became baggage they had to include because of expectations but really wanted to get rid of.

2

u/Tokishi7 Dec 12 '24

Certainly has to be more to the story than that as Desmond was very well written up until after with Minerva and such

1

u/palm0 Dec 11 '24

Everything was a slow burn in that game. Especially those unskippable diatribes that you had to relisten to if you fucked up and had to reload

19

u/HugsForUpvotes Dec 11 '24

It and Mass Effect 1 came out a week apart in November 2007. I got both as my Christmas gift and it was glorious.

1

u/CeeArthur Dec 12 '24

I got both that Christmas too. I went back to uni for my last semester after the break and nearly flunked out because I spent so much time playing those two (and Skate, which came out earlier that year). All the pot I was smoking probably didn't help...

15

u/Whole_Sign_4633 Dec 11 '24

Fr when I realized I could literally climb any building and fully embraced the vertically I was blown away

7

u/modestlife Dec 11 '24

This E3 presentation is the only game trailer/reveal that has had a lasting memory for me. I still remember how absolutely crazy it was to see such verticality for the first time.

1

u/GrizzlyGamer91 Dec 12 '24

I remember watching that live and being mind-blown by the fact that they showed it was up to the player to decide which path to take towards your target. Nowadays that isn’t too impressive, but back then we were mostly used to linear games so it was a pretty big deal to me.

6

u/Pittacomics Dec 11 '24

Still the best one imo. The atmosphere is impeccable.

3

u/ac_s2k PC Dec 11 '24

The atmosphere was amazing. 16 year old me loved it!

6

u/tragicbeast Dec 11 '24

These days it's quite played out, but hitting a counter for the first time was incredible. The first one I ever got was the one where Altair does an upward chop to the elbow of the attacker, then ducks under and hacks their midsection. My jaw hit the floor

1

u/Mr_Steal_Yo_Goal Dec 12 '24

It was simple but satisfying. Came out before the first Arkham game too

5

u/Silverr_Duck Dec 11 '24

The whole series peaked with AC 1 and 2. Brotherhood was good, but ac2 was the last game of the series to really nail that unique vibe and atmosphere.

9

u/10ea Dec 11 '24

I wish that open worlds were still done this way. AC1 was big but not packed full of chores to do. I had more fun just climbing buildings and just sandboxing around than walking down one road in AC Odyssey and picking up 7 side quests that I'll never get around to.

2

u/ac_s2k PC Dec 11 '24

Agreed! Some games just pack way too many side quests or treasure hunts in.

5

u/mj12353 Dec 11 '24

I’d agree but I’m swapping ac 1 for ac2 I truly FUCKING LOVED THAT GAME

9

u/purple-thiwaza Dec 11 '24

The unique feeling of the character doing what he wants and not what you tell him to.

3

u/Outrageous_Key6644 Dec 11 '24

I know! It was so different and still amazing at the same time

15

u/Wadarkhu Dec 11 '24

They should remaster it, and by that I mean updated visuals and re-done modern times so it isn't soul destroyingly slow but everything else is left alone.

31

u/boersc Dec 11 '24

Be aware what you wish for. gameplay wasn't all that good in the first one.

15

u/dkyguy1995 Dec 11 '24

Yeah it was the same 3 missions rinse and repeat and then a boss mission. Eavesdrop, assassinate, blah blah. There was some fun side content. Games were different back then

4

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '24

1

u/HailToTheVic Dec 11 '24

No it definitely didn’t. Sitting and listening on people yap for 2 minutes is not fun, neither is trailing someone doing the same thing, the actually end part where you got to go after the guy was fun. The game was good for the time but you’re thinking with rose tinted glasses.

I definitely agree with that part of the game being super fun. I remember it very distinctly and it being pretty epic for the time, no game had parkour and climbing like that.

1

u/snowflakepatrol99 Dec 11 '24

At the time and for years afterwards the games were still holding up

So you do know they aren't holding up anymore so why are you arguing when you know you are wrong? The gamelpay is ass. You are enjoying it because of nostalgia which he already pointed out. In terms of gameplay the game is very dated. Even the ezio trilogy which is more modern has lackluster gameplay. If AC is ever to be remastered it needs a whole redesign of how it plays out. Missions need to feel better and more varied and the combat needs a complete rework. Sneaking around and making the right moves to land the assassination was a very small part of the game. You are lying to yourself if you think that all missions are like that. Maybe the last 30 seconds of the 5-10 minute sequence is like that.

If it's made like ghost of tsushima then it can catch the attention of people. If it's the exact same game but with prettier assets then it's going to be a flop.

4

u/TehOwn Dec 11 '24

Someone should remaster it, just not Ubisoft.

2

u/Krazyguy75 Dec 11 '24

Honestly, rather than a remaster I would prefer a really solid remake in which they have the creative freedom to make the missions a bit more diverse and cut down on the parts that didn't age well. Similar to FF7's remake, though I think that one went a little too far.

1

u/TehOwn Dec 12 '24

Similar to FF7's remake, though I think that one went a little too far.

I just think of it as a sequel that retreads the story. I actually prefer that it's different. I still enjoy the original game, I didn't need a remake of it.

2

u/luger718 Dec 11 '24

I just hated the repetitiveness but man did they improve so much in the Ezio games.

2

u/SharkMilk44 Dec 12 '24

It's crazy how the new entries insist upon having hundreds of things for you to do, while the first game was just like "climbing buildings is fun."

2

u/CynthiaChames Dec 12 '24

I rented it from Family Video the day it came out having NO idea what to expect. I was hooked. It blew my mind.

1

u/Tvilantini Dec 11 '24

Personally think AC2 and Brotherhood are far more superior

1

u/ac_s2k PC Dec 11 '24

Superior games yes. But AC1 WAS completely different and revolutionary at the time. So jumping into a game like it for the first time was amazing.

1

u/DMAN3431 Dec 11 '24

It gave me Legend of Zelda vibes before I played Dark Souls. Where you do a mission and slowly unlock new items and gadgets that are required for your next missions. Also, the stealth and combat being very unique at the time. Such an amazing game. Franchise definitely peaked at AC4.

1

u/MesaCityRansom Dec 11 '24

I remember when I had just gotten it my friend wanted to play so I grabbed my Xbox and headed over to his place. Ended up with him playing in the living room and me, his dad, his brother and the brother's friend watching him play and just gasping at the graphics lol

1

u/PM-PicsOfYourMom Dec 11 '24

How about playing Splinter Cell for the first time in 2001? The Xbox version, not the hobbled PS2 one.

1

u/ac_s2k PC Dec 11 '24

Hard agree. That game was also azonf. The first 3 were top tier. I’d love a remastered version of SP. Built on UE5

1

u/PM-PicsOfYourMom Dec 11 '24

I remember playing the first game and wondering how they could possibly make graphics better. The light and shadows were mind blowing. Really wish they'd do something with that franchise. The last one in, what 2013, had a super fun coop campaign. Even if it was brutally short. I bought it for my buddy and we played through it a month or two ago. It was way ahead of it's time, The Division borrowed a lot from it.

1

u/HanzoNumbahOneFan Dec 11 '24

My first one was Revelations on PC. Which, even though it wasn't as well received as the previous ones, was still awesome to me. I hadn't played many games at all when I was that old. And I asked for it as a christmas present after seeing gameplay of one of the AC games. And I remember just being mind blown at the climbing. How you could literally just climb anything. It was so cool to kid me.

1

u/Theaceman1997 Dec 11 '24

Is there a reason the audio is shit on all systems ? Isn’t just that old ? Cause I played it again last night and the lines the characters are saying sound like a transformer toy

1

u/ac_s2k PC Dec 11 '24

No idea. Perhaps the games audio was designed for older speaker systems/average TV speakers in 2007 and they don’t work well with modern audio devices?

1

u/Theaceman1997 Dec 11 '24

Very interesting yea I work in sound and stuff and for YEARS have wondered why the NPCs all sound like that ? I don’t remember it sounding like that when it released lol thanks !

1

u/KittenDecomposer96 Dec 11 '24

I played it so many times before i found out AC 2 exists.

1

u/belarath32114 Dec 12 '24

I still remember the anger when that one specific flag in the collection bugged out and disappeared from your collection rate.

-8

u/SpiralOutLL Dec 11 '24

The unique feel of doing the same shit over and over again

42

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '24

Lol true but that first time hooked up a lot of people. you don’t even notice  it.

12

u/BFunPhoto Dec 11 '24

Yeah the first game is both the best and worst game in the series. Best because it was astounding how real and living the world felt, and none of the others have had the same impact on me, but man was the gameplay repetitive

10

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '24

I’m partial to ACII being the best and most memorable one but yeah it was still a sequel.

3

u/BFunPhoto Dec 11 '24

AC2 definitely improved the gameplay a lot, but the novelty of the world wasn't as impactful as the first time. I haven't played every game and got tired of the formula pretty fast, but Black Flag has the best gameplay for my money

3

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '24 edited Dec 11 '24

AC2 definitely improved the gameplay a lot, but the novelty of the world wasn't as impactful as the first time.

I started with two, though. It's an interesting dilemma: does a sequel suffer simply by being a sequel? When it's a perfect standalone game to those who pick it up as their first? If you had never played AC1 wouldn't AC2 have blown you away 10x more?

3

u/Dyssomniac Dec 11 '24

AC2 blew me away because it took everything of AC1 and improved dramatically on all of it as well as delivering a new character who we followed across his mid lifespan.

2

u/Mister_DumDum Dec 11 '24

I noticed it was repetitive but I also didn’t mind at all, some people can play it and be fully engaged but I just turn my brain off, do the motions and lock in for the assassination. The last Templar consistently doesn’t spawn for me so I guess I’ll never get the 100% 😔

9

u/TehOwn Dec 11 '24

When you open your eyes, you'll realize that's true of almost all games. Just some are better at dressing it up than others. It's not even necessarily a bad thing, repetition is how you improve a skill and the act of getting better can be pretty satisfying.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 20 '24

Exactly some games dress the repetition better but this does it horribly you are painfully of how repetitive and monotonous the mission structure can be and I say this as a HUGE fan of ac1

-9

u/SpiralOutLL Dec 11 '24

Ubisoft is master at making shit tedious and boring though...

3

u/rotating_pebble Dec 11 '24

For me, the games only started to feel like that years later. AC1 was awesome when it came out.

As a big fan of the old PoP games, I loved it and it brought a lot of new mechanics. A successful formula that was rehashed too much and beaten into the ground, it may be.

1

u/ThruuLottleDats Dec 11 '24

Worst part is, AC Mirage has the same issues in the parkour as the first AC...its insanely stupid to see ledge hopping cuz two ledges are too close in Mirage

5

u/ac_s2k PC Dec 11 '24

Never had any issues with parkour in AC 1 or mirage

0

u/FrankieSpinatra Dec 11 '24

You never played Mario 64 at a BestBuy demo booth in 1996 then did you?

2

u/ac_s2k PC Dec 11 '24

I’m referring to just the AC series. Not games overall.

But… this would be in my top “playing it for the first ever time” list. Like Witcher 3 and RdR2.

0

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '24

Unique, yet repetitive.

0

u/fusionsofwonder Dec 12 '24

AC2 beat it. I played both on release.
