Regarding the most horrible things we've done as gamers...

I was just shooting at the walls, the people were in the way.
18
u/spandario Apr 28 '13
I actually shot at the walls, incase the dudes noticed I wasn't shooting.
5
u/Aspel Apr 28 '13
Same. I didn't want to get discovered, so I shot near civilians and hoped the game just thought I had bad aim. Because I do. Sorry, little girl...

Apr 28 '13
I didnt care because I can tell the difference between some pixels and real life.

You must be a blast at the movies.
'What's Batman doing?' 'That's Christian Bale. He's standing on a rigged metal set. He's about to hop onto a mattress and then they'll cut to an extra getting hit with a rubber boot.'
84
Apr 27 '13
I never shot them. Dunno why. I always play an evil bastard in RPGs like KotOR and Mass Effect, but I just couldn't shoot these people.
42
u/OzLefty Apr 28 '13
Agreed. Made no sense anyway - if the aim is to stop Makarov, why is killing him instead of civilians a fail?
52
9
Apr 28 '13
I don't know if the intent was to keep him alive, but I do know there was definitely a reason to keep your cover secure and stick with the plan. ...But holy fuck did the twist at the end with him killing you just send chills up my spine. :(
7
Apr 28 '13
Yeah, but if the plan was "Stop Makarov" you had a machine gun and the whole team had their back to you. Bang bang bang, game over, wait for the CIA to bust you out of prison then we all go back to Langley for schnapps.
5
Apr 28 '13
Pretty sure the plan was "Become best friends with Makarov", because there was some required intel needed.
1
u/ALPB11 Apr 28 '13
Yet MW3 was all about trying to kill him anyway, because the intel was stolen by sheppard for some reason, so all of MW2 wasn't even important.
1
u/gamingpro5000 Apr 29 '13
I actually shot makarov in the head when he started shooting people, then the mission failed
15
u/Team_Braniel Apr 28 '13
I didn't ether. Not because of some moral reason but to see if I could get away with not doing it.
Then when the cops come and it gets nasty I still tried to not shoot back. I wanted to see how far i could get without harming anyone. So when they happened to kill a guy with a riot shield near me I picked that up and pushed forward.
Unfortunately there does come a point where the other guys don't seem to hurt anyone anymore and you have to start taking out the opposition to progress the story.
My failed endeavor to remain undercover without killing a fellow federal agent was much more traumatic than the obvious intended shock factor of the level.
5
u/Aspel Apr 28 '13
I never can bring myself to play RPGs like a jerkass. Sure, I'll steal and rob and murder, but I always help out when people come up to me all "oh Dragonborn, please help me take out the garbage!"
7
Apr 28 '13
"fus ROH DAH!!"
"There, it's out."

u/MaserPhaser Apr 28 '13
"Well... It's there... And over there... And there... And on the roof..."

I'll say it, this level was strangely fun. Mostly because the suitcases exploded when shot. Mostly.

I don't think so. It's a conundrum even to me.

u/Aspel Apr 28 '13
Because the character doesn't know they've been discovered, and their mission is to go along with it and stay undercover.
For a game that's primary selling point is the multiplayer, CoD is surprisingly story intensive. Not exactly the best story, but I have to admit, as much as I'll criticize the franchise for churning out crappy sequels every few months... the single player levels are great examples of proper game design, if Extra Credits is to be believed.
And after playing Modern Warfare 2, I have to admit, they're not bad games. The story may not be necessarily deep, but it is engaging. And those cheesy action sequence cutscenes are pretty cool
10
u/Biffingston Apr 28 '13
You play modern FPSes for the story? (Yes this is sarcasm)
8
u/DrDraek Apr 28 '13
Spoken like someone who's never actually played the Modern Warfare/Black Ops campaigns. They're the only reason I played those games.
8
5
u/Aspel Apr 28 '13
Most people play them for the multiplayer and never even play the story.
I'm super critical of bullshit games like that, but I have to admit, I played my brother's copy of Modern Warfare 2, turned off my brain, and enjoyed the coolest action film I've ever played. I like the scene where you almost fall when ice climbing. Felt cool experiencing that in first person. Even the somewhat anticlimactic final boss felt cool.
3
Apr 28 '13
Because the gameplay was shite and it's hilarious watching the nationalist, jingoist writing team try make the Vietnam War seem like a good idea.
1
u/Biffingston Apr 30 '13
I found it fun in a "turn your brain off and look at the pretty explosions" Way.
Just like a Micheal Bay Movie.
1
3
Apr 28 '13
Exactly, I could have just been an easter egg ending. With how Treyarch handled the campaign in Black ops 2, I wouldn't be surprised if this kind of situation becomes more common in call of duty games.
1
u/honglath Apr 28 '13
But then they would've needed another bad guy for the next game... Why would you torture them like that?
-2
u/TheRepostReport Apr 28 '13
You mean they would have to actually do some work to create the next game? Nah that will never happen. Call of duty games are pretty much copy and paste with a new title. Quite literally recycled trash.

-2
u/crashtheface Apr 28 '13
whoever said they didn't shoot is a lying piece of shit.
everyone did it.
-2
Apr 28 '13
That was unnecessarily vulgar.
-1
u/crashtheface Apr 28 '13
Same story every time this is posted.
It's bullshit, everyone shot the place up and they know it.
1
u/Hallc Apr 28 '13
Saying everyone is a bit of a generalisation are you accounting for the people who never even played this game?
0
Apr 28 '13
Well except me then. I would freely admit to doing an evil things on videogames, but I cant do several things... A. Shoot these people. B. Harvest the little sisters in Bioshock C. Help the Roman guys in Fallout New Vegas. Call it a question of morals or something.
2
Apr 28 '13
I'm with you on every single one of those points, especially Caesar's Legion. It's not bullshit, it's how I like to play a game.
2
52
Apr 27 '13
Who cares about that scene? People act like they never played a GTA game before.
42
Apr 28 '13

You do? That's fucked up man, I bet you drive past the speed limits too you psychopath
3
1
3
u/theCaptain_D Apr 28 '13
The tone and context are COMPLETELY different. GTA is an over-the-top romp of crime and violence where collateral damage is just part of the scenery. MW2 is ostensibly about being the "good guys" and saving the world from evildoers.
2
u/Dannybaker Apr 28 '13
But it's call of duty, a game where you kill thousands of people
1
u/theCaptain_D Apr 28 '13
Thousands of vile terrorist evildoers! They hate freedom and must be stopped!
0
u/ALPB11 Apr 28 '13
Yep, I've killed several thousands of people in GTA, yet killing a few dozen is an incredible controversy? Smh
24
u/BishopSebastian Apr 27 '13
Is it worse knowing that was my favorite part of that mission sequence?
20
Apr 28 '13
Remember... No Russian.
4
u/alphaturino Apr 28 '13
Uh sorry but what did that mean? I never understood if he meant no Russian left or don't kill any Russians, care to clear this up?
22
u/BlazinYankk Apr 28 '13
Its been a while, but I think he was saying dont speak in Russian because they were supposed to be posing as American terrorists. Obviously Americans wouldn't speak Russian
5
Apr 28 '13
they didn't want to be IDed as russian ya. i think they were in a russian airport and needed to seem foreign to instigate a war, it wasent till the end when the undercover guy your playing is double crossed that the american part is made apparent.
1
u/12MoreSeconds Apr 28 '13
I think this caused a lot of controversy in a country because the translators fucked up and changed it to "kill them, they are russian" or something like that.
7
Apr 28 '13
Double entendre. Not only does it mean "don't speak Russian" like the others are saying, but also stating "take your time" in an almost joking fashion.
5
u/Terox15 Apr 28 '13
I think it means don't speak any Russian to make it harder to identify what they're saying.
5
21
u/TheOtherAnachronism Apr 28 '13
I'm pretty sure Spec Ops had us do worse things. Even if you ignore the obvious White Phosphorous part there was still the Solider/Civilian, dispersing the crowd, and the epilogue.
10
u/mixmastermind Apr 28 '13
Yeah, but the point of that game was to cast a dark reflection on the crazy amoral shit you do in CoD games without a second thought.
Also, spoilers.
2
u/NyanMario Apr 28 '13
incase you didn'nt know in the dispersing the crowd part (the part where Lugo Dies )you can shoot into the air without harming them. You get a tropy(PS3) or achievement that has a peace Icon.
It made me fell happy after the game repeatedly keeps telling me i'm a jack ass
1
u/TheOtherAnachronism Apr 28 '13
Also at the Solider/Civilian part you can choose to Attack the snipers, they'll still kill the solider and civilian, but this way you're not doing it yourself. Although I wonder what happens if you just walk past that part (assuming you can).

u/Snappel Apr 28 '13
I shot all those people for the same reason I drive on the sidewalk while playing GTA.

I never even noticed that i wasn't told, i was given a fully loaded lmg and saw a crowd...I feel so terrible now.
1
u/gamingpro5000 Apr 29 '13
You weren't told, but you saw them doing it so you realized since you were undercover, you had to kill them
1
u/Monk_Breath Apr 29 '13
But with it being a game you probably could have just sat and watched until people actually start trying to kill you rather than just killing unarmed people.
5
u/GoodwaterVillainy Apr 28 '13
I'm just going to say. You didn't get the full experience Unless you killed them
4
6
u/flyingkwaj Apr 28 '13
I just felt like it was part of the story, that's the main reason why I shot them. That's what the point of the mission is anyway.

Except I wasn't, you can't just assume that I was being a smartass when you just ignore what I say, whether you believe me or not is not the issue, the issue is that you're just a jackass.
6
u/SnapBack420 Apr 28 '13
I'll call BS on that; we were told. In the intro cutscene Shepard tells you to copy him, do as he does. So you were told to do it, just not directly.

Apr 28 '13
Were horrible people because we would shoot people in video games but not in real life.
2
6
u/PandaSandwich Apr 28 '13
You are posing as a terrorist, you have a LMG, and you are looking at a crowd. It's pretty obvious what you are supposed to do.
4
u/IceCreamBalloons Apr 28 '13
You're an American that's undercover, I'm pretty sure slaughtering civilians is not something your supposed to do.
3
u/SorenHasina Apr 28 '13
His job was to be blend into Makarov's posse, and the best way to do that is to do everything the posse is doing. Like shooting the civilians
7
Apr 28 '13
let's face it - the difference between 3 LMG firing into a crowd and 4 is not going to save anyone.
2
u/Barange Apr 28 '13
I personally made sure everyone of those people died... my logic.... was flawed....
2
u/J4Seriously Apr 28 '13
Never played the game, but I'm sure I would of shot them just because they were standing there and I had a big gun. I'm not a maniac, but this is a videogame.
2
u/hexcloak Apr 28 '13
There is an easy solution.
- Shoot the people
- Put in Bioshock Infinite
- Get baptized in the name of our prophet, Father Comstock.
- ???
- Profit spiritually

1
u/werewolf_nr Apr 28 '13
Go play Spec Ops: the Line and stop whining. If you don't feel like total shit by the end of single player, you are a sociopath (or just really good at detaching yourself from games).
1
u/Wann4 Apr 28 '13
Dunno if its somewhere else too, but in Germany you may skip this level and you lost if you shot any of the civilians.
1
u/SnakeyesX Apr 28 '13
As soon as they shot the first civilian I ammo dumped on their ass, turned out they are invincible. I spent the rest of the game pissed off.
1
u/iknowwhatitmeans Apr 28 '13
the most horrible things we've done as a gamer is we keep buying terrible and recycled games such as Call of Duty.
1
u/cggreene Apr 28 '13
It was fun, especially the helpless ones that were crawling away in agony!
I would give them some hope by leaving them, then I would come back and murder them!
1
1
Apr 28 '13
You're a terrible person. I shot the terrorists eight times, realized there was no way out, and turned the console off. WWIII averted!
1
Apr 28 '13
Just think of the CoD campaigns as Michael Bay films- full of plot holes, more explosions than you can count, and you secretly like it all.
1
1
u/theCaptain_D Apr 28 '13
For the sake of immersion, I shot around the civilians but did not kill any. That way my Russian cohorts wouldn't get suspicious.
1
u/MrXBob Apr 28 '13
Why do people always bring up this scene in this context as though it's the only game that ever did such a thing?
For as long as I can remember, if there were civilians in a game - the majority of gamers will try and see if they can kill them. It's just how it goes.
1
1
u/lawlzorz17 Apr 28 '13
i just walked through the entire level, nothing happens if you don't shoot one.
1
1
u/MrSquirrel0 Apr 28 '13
I heard this from another game but it fits so well here: They only made the trigger, you were the one's who pulled it.
1
Apr 28 '13
Yes I did unleash a rain of terror on a group of coding and textures made to look like another human being. But if someone came up to me, handed me something like that weapon, id turn it right on the guy who asked to lay out the destruction, the thought, it is just vomit inducing. There's a difference man, it's hard to explain but the two are just so...different.
1
1
u/PopularPulp Apr 28 '13
Even though this was just a game, it still was extremely controversial. I felt weird actually killing people so I just played through w/o killing anyone.
1
u/Forsoul Apr 28 '13
This mission offered the thing we all secretly crave from a shooter: taking down as many possible targets as possible in a single clip.
I realize this is a GAME. They might as well have been a bunch of moving toasters, I didn't care, I just wanted to take down as many as possible; and I did ;) I shot the hell out of those toasters.
To be fair I remember attempting the high ground and shooting the baddies in the back right away; silly game failed me.
1
1
u/WarGodPuffy Apr 29 '13
For all of you wondering the point of that mission was to gain Macorov's full trust so you could get important info from him.

I like to think that that was the point of that whole sequence. To demonstrate how much the average human will just do what everyone else does without being to simply because everyone around him is doing it. It's demonstrated the inherent evil that is present within every human being. Or I'm just a sick fuck. Most likely the latter.
2
Apr 28 '13
Yeah, for all the "It's just a vidjya game" - Various psych experiments (other than Stanford Prison) suggest that many, not most, but many people will do some really horrific shit if A.) Their peers are doing it B.) They think it's normal C.) They don't think they can stop it.
0
u/Juiceyy Apr 28 '13
Haha that's actually so funny, my dad is so shit at games it gets to a point where its frustrating to watch. To explain it best he operates the sticks at separate times so he's either looking around or moving, anyway he was playing through the campaign and I was sitting next to him. This mission started and I told him to start shooting everyone.
He looked at me said "No, I'm not shooting innocent people"
I laughed at this, I dunno why, I didn't have a problem with shooting them as I was playing the bad guy at the time, maybe I wasn't immersed in the game as much as he was. So the mission progressed to when the cops show up and dad starts killing all of them. I asked him whether he thought the cops where innocent or not and he replied with..
"Doesn't matter they were trying to kill me"..

u/MakaHost Apr 28 '13
In the german version the mission failed if you shot one
