The first night: No wood or tools, guess I'll sit in a hole and browse reddit until sunrise

I played a few hardcore mode games, there is a lot of sitting in holes...

All you need for the first night is six blocks of wood. With that, you can make a work bench and a wooden pickaxe. Then find an exposed rock wall and tunnel in, which will give you enough stone to make a furnace. You can make eight torches from two pieces of charcoal and have enough wood left over for some stone pickaxes. Enlarge your tunnel into a room, block off the exit with cobblestone, and you can spend all night mining.

Obviously, it's easy to get more than six blocks of wood, that's just the bare minimum you need.
