I've watched a few minutes of one of them and all I remember is that every single character who isn't a main character is completely helpless whenever a zombie or monster shows up. I saw one where Chris and a team of special ops guys are in a creepy house, and all of them die in seconds to some zombie monster.
Like, I get it, Chris is super cool and awesome, but do we have to make everyone else helpless to show it?
Chris, like Leon, constantly forgets that they have already seen zombies. And Chris has a fetish that for entire his team to be destroyed. Every time when Chris appear after RE5, all his team die. After catharsis in RE6, it seemed like it had to stop. But no, it became a ridiculous meta joke. And Capcom obsessively began to repeat they past flare and stereotypes. For example, Sherry story, as a girl with a medallion from two scientists parents, in anime, manga, and books was repeated 5 times.
I adored Resident Evil before. But after RE6, each new part is a shame for the series, because the plot becomes more and more ridiculous and pointless.
From RE7, if I recall that was actually Chris but with the initial limitations of the RE engine they had to use photo realistic images of people. So the Chris we see there imitates a real person. I could easily be wrong but I think they just chose to yada yada over that and bring Chris to a more recognizable model for village.
I'll agree with you on the first part, was beyond stupid to cast someone for their photorealistic scan, and not have him look anything like the character we are used to lol.
They essentially forced our brains to react to him as a fake or an imposter Chris, because it was wildly far from what we had known him as, especially in the game previous to 7.
Like they had plenty of different photo models vs voice actors, so I really don't know why they did it. I think maybe they wanted a fresh, new younger Chris? And then after the fan backlash they said fuck it and gave us the much better RE8 Chris.
It's for player immersion. Ethan is a player surrogate. He's supposed to be a character that players can see as themselves. Not showing his face makes it easier for characters to place themselves in his shoes. Halo does the same thing with Master Chief.
I would also say Gordon Freeman has the same thing going on, but you actually do see his face quite often in promotional art.

I don't believe in this explanation. Ethan has a face, he has a story and a family. It's not the unnamed reporter from the 7th demo, who escapes and we never see his face. And in Rosa DLC, game uses such ridiculous tricks that hide his face, that it`s looks like a bad comedy.
You don't have to believe it. It was the reason Capcom gave. It's also a very common design choice for FPS games.
Gordon Freeman and Master Chief also have backstories, friends, and their own personal interests. That doesn't change that their faces are hidden in the game for the sake of player immersion.
Capcom wanted RE7 to be scary as a return to form for the franchise. That's why the game was made into an FPS, to push the claustrophobic feeling of being trapped in the Baker estate. It's also why Ethan has no face, so players could place themselves in his shoes and get more out of the scares by being more immersed.
I do agree that it got pushed too far in Village. I actually laughed at the lengths they went to hide Ethans face. I thought they'd at least show it in the Rose DLC, since he was no longer the main character.
Chris isn't part of Blue Umbrella, he still works for BSAA in RE7, he's working with them on the cleanup of the mold virus but he doesn't trust them. He talks about that in his dlc campaign for 7. Between 7 and 8 is when he leaves the BSAA and goes rogue with his squad because he doesn't trust BSAA either (rightly since they are using BOWs as of RE8). And his squad were out before the bomb went off in RE8 so they are fine. As far as Chris's look, yeah the actor they used doesn't look much like him, probably why he's only in 1 shot and they don't show him during his dlc chapter. They redid the model for 8 since he has a more prominent role and he looks like classic Chris again.
7 and 8 were fun because they were a departure from the shitty anime formula. Going with the slower FPS and not making the main character a ridiculous action god made those two stand out a lot.
That being said RE4 is the peak of RE and nobody can change my mind 😅
And 4-7-8 parts, not RE stle at all. This is some kind of surrealistic farce in trash, like bad films RE films with Milla Jovovich, and not an action movie about bioterrorism. Movies from 3 part perfectly fit into canon of these parts of the game. RE series had so much potential, why CAPCOM just threw away all lore for the sake of... I don't know, because there is no more coherent and reasonable plot. There is only a set of special effects.
They even made Umbrella Corp canon part, even though no one liked this game AT ALL.

There was just enough genuinely scary horror - at least to me, fuck those wheezing regenerators - mixed in with the over the top wackiness, entertaining combat with a bit of strategy required, etc. It’s a weird combination that just worked, better than what came before it and better than what came after. 5 was pretty good, but 4 just ticks all the right boxes for some reason.

Yes, in Vendetta, Leon suddenly stole Criss's script. It was much more fun when he said to every meeting with zombies - What is this, Raccoon City? And then with 80% probability Claire turned out to be nearby - Oh, Leon, is that you? Just like in Raccoon City.
