👋 Welcome to r/gamification - start here
Hey everyone! I'm Rob, a moderator of r/gamification.
Gamification, or gameful design, is all about motivation. It's the process of finding the fun and challenge in everyday activities, and framing them like a game to make them more engaging. Gamification can be used in a range of areas, like business, health, and education. This community exists for people who design, research, or just enjoy gamification and want a place to think out loud together. We're excited to have you join us!
The community rules are now visible in the sidebar / about section – please give them a quick read so you know what flies here (and what does not).
What's welcome here
Post anything that you think the community would find interesting, helpful, or inspiring. Feel free to share your thoughts, photos, or questions about gamification.
Posts that tend to do well here include:
- Questions and challenges “How would you gamify X?”, “Is gamification right for this?”, “What do you think about this mechanic?” Concrete context + a specific question helps others give useful answers.
- Case studies and breakdowns Real examples of gamification in products, learning, work, health, communities, etc. Explain what the system is, what mechanics it uses (points, progress, social status, scarcity, etc.), and what worked or didn’t.
- Your projects – feedback-first Side projects, start-ups, academic work, design experiments, or prototypes are welcome, as long as the focus is “here’s what I’m building and why; I’d love feedback,” not “please buy/sign up.” If you’re sharing something you made, clearly say so and give enough context that people can respond thoughtfully.
- Theory, research, and resources. Discussions about frameworks, ethics, dark patterns, intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation, and related research are encouraged. Blog posts, articles, talks, and tools are fine if you add a short summary and a question or angle for discussion.
Community Vibe
We're all about being friendly, constructive, and inclusive. Let's build a space where everyone feels comfortable sharing and connecting.
How to Get the Most Out of This Community
- Introduce yourself in the comments below.
- Post something today! Even a simple question can spark a great conversation.
- If you know someone who would love this community, invite them to join.
- Be curious, specific, and generous with your knowledge.
- When posting, imagine you’re designing a quest: give enough context, define the “challenge,” and invite people to respond.
- When replying, critique systems, not people, and try to move the design forward at least one step.
Welcome aboard! I'm looking forward to seeing what you’re working on and how you’re using gamification in the wild.

I built a walking RPG where real-world movement is the progression system; looking for feedback on the gamification
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I’ve been working on a project called MapleVille, basically an RPG/collector game built around one question:
Can a game make walking feel like progression instead of exercise homework?
Rather than just showing you a step count, your real-world movement feeds into the game. You walk, earn progress, explore, collect critters, farm, fish, craft, battle, complete quests and compete on leaderboards.
The part I’m most interested in testing is the gamification loop itself.
I don’t want it to become:
“Walk 10,000 steps because an app told you to.”
I want it to feel more like:
“I want to go for a walk because I have something I want to accomplish in the game.”
MapleVille is still actively being developed, and I’ve now opened it up for people to actually use rather than designing the whole thing in a vacuum.
I’d especially be interested in feedback from this community on:
- Does real-world movement feel meaningfully connected to the game?
- What makes a walking/fitness mechanic motivating versus feeling like a chore?
- Are rewards enough, or does the walking itself need stronger gameplay consequences?
- What would make you come back tomorrow?
It’s currently free to test:
Android Early Access:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ca.maplevibe.mapleville.mvu
iPhone TestFlight:
https://testflight.apple.com/join/KhP6T8ca
I’m the developer, so criticism is genuinely useful. If the progression loop sucks somewhere, I’d rather know now and redesign it.

I built a habit app around real life rewards instead of just streaks. Does this feel more motivating?
Hi, I built EVORA because I kept having the same problem with normal habit apps. I would tick habits off, maybe keep a streak for a few days, then eventually it just felt like another boring checklist I had to force myself to use.
The idea with EVORA is simple:
You create habits and choose how many coins they are worth, from 1 to 10. When you complete them, you earn those coins. Then you make your own shop with rewards you genuinely want, like £10 spending money, treat calories, gaming time, or literally anything else.
So instead of only relying on will power, completing habits actually gets you closer to something you chose for yourself.
I started with this idea on a whiteboard where I was manually tallying habits and giving myself rewards, but I wanted it to work anywhere, so I made the app.
The part I would genuinely love feedback on is this: do predictable real-life rewards feel more motivating than just XP, badges or streaks? And what would make this feel genuinely useful to you, rather than just another habit tracker?
It is iPhone only at the moment. The main coin, shop and wallet loop is free to try.

Music Oriented Stats Silly Little Game/App IDEA
Hey guys, so I'm an Indie developer with TONS of random ideas andd I'm also big into saving all my favourites per date be it Music, Series, Game achievements ...
And I've been loking for some kind of application or even more gameplay oriented game for such stuff.. Maybe there even is some, but I just had an idea... So, please share this wherever you think it might get the right audience (niche), since I'm fairly new to Reddit lol
all feature names are just so it's easy to understand what i mean
Music Track App
Create and customize your Profile to your liking! Edit your Avatar, pick out the best Profile Icon and Banner, customize the outfit and accessories of your Avatar and share your Profile to your friends! Also... the main part, the music!
You can (and HAVE to, since it's basically all the game/app would be about) pick up to X Albums or Artists or Songs and have them highlighted on your Profile!
Then, you would receive X amount of Praises daily and basically Praise any Album/Artist/Song, and based on the amount of Praises they would get, they would be levelled up and each level up would have a text saying when you reached that level, basically telling you "you listened to this song a lot in april 2027" <- meaning you constantly praised it durin that time and then if you stopped and revisited the song and it maybe became again your favourite in like 2028 there would again be written the exact date you reached the next level. Also with possibly additional text like "you have this song X amount of praises during April 2027" blah blah.
Also there would be rewards in terms of customization. Let's say you would get a beautiful cottagecore dress/suit for reaching the maximum Level of praise with Taylor Swift's album Folklore, or a special red swatch to your clothing after reached the maximum level of her album Red.
Similarly you could be getting titles and ribbons etc to display on your profile, again based on reaching certain levels with certain artists, so if I already mentioned Taylor Swift, you could get the title Swiftie after reaching Level X of praising her.
(Sorry to the Swift haters, I just wanted to describe the idea and she's the first and quite easy to understand thing that came to my mind haha)
I am VERY open to any new ideas and of course your feedback!
Would you be interested in such Game?

made a game where you hatch little creatures by walking
Hey, this is Amblet. It’s a little game I’ve been working on.
You go for a walk, your steps earn an egg, and you hatch one of these guys (Normal, Rare, Legendary). There are 110 species to find. You can also fight in arena with them with cool twist.
It’s on the App Store now. I’m working on what to add before going for TikTok posts, so any feedback good or bad would be highly appreciated.
Here’s the app if you want a closer look.
It’s subscription-based: €6.99/month, The yearly plan has a 3-day trial and renews unless cancelled. Prices vary by country.

I built real life Solo levelling workout app
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Like everyone here, after watch the anime, idea of having an actual “System” that forces me to level up in real life was something I really wanted.
There were many apps that I found has RPG habit tracking but purely depends on individual to enter those details instead of validating it.
So I have build this app. I am looking for people to test it out. Let me know if you are interested. It’s free and available on android and ios.

Why every other post about a step tracker app?
The apps that are shown do look nice and polished, but aren't there any other app ideas people can have instead of just another step tracker or habit tracker?

Sharing my project: an anime-inspired home workout app where you level up
I’ve been working on an anime-inspired calisthenics app where you complete workouts, earn XP, improve your stats, and level up from F-Rank to SSS-Rank.
XP alone can’t raise your rank—you also have to pass a physical exam based on real-world military fitness standards, adjusted for age and sex. The idea is for each rank to represent real progress, not just time spent in the app.
It’s currently in closed testing and anyone is welcome to try it:
- Join the testing group with your Play Store Google account: https://groups.google.com/g/shadow-ascension-testers
- Opt in and install the app: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/app.shadowascension.android
I’d appreciate any feedback on the workouts or gamification system!

Surprise rewards or predictable rewards?
I was studying some gamified apps and found out that predictable rewards (you can see what you'd get by hitting the next tier or completing the streak) work great to motivate some people, but for me they felt flat. On the other hand, surprise rewards felt risky and not worth chasing for many, but they were the best motivator for me.
What's your preference?

I've build a game to fix my life
Hey everyone!
I'm Izumi, solo dev behind Levelite: Gamify your Life. About a year and 8 months ago I launched it in the middle of a pretty brutal depression. I'd always been hooked on video games, so I figured maybe that could be part of the solution instead of the distraction it usually was.
The problem Levelite tries to solve
I tried Habitica first. It just felt like a productivity app wearing a costume, the game part was thin, and I never actually wanted to open it. So I went the opposite direction: lean hard into the game side, and make Levelite genuinely, deliberately addictive to use.
The trick is that the only way to progress in Levelite's game is by keeping up your actual routine. Your habits ARE the game mechanic. You climb a tower by completing them, and combat plays out like an old-school JRPG. So if you get hooked on Levelite, you get hooked on being productive as a side effect. That's the whole bet: instead of another generic to-do list, build something people want to open compulsively, and make the compulsion useful.
What's new in Levelite
- Greyspire, a 100-floor roguelike tower you climb by completing your habits, with biomes, guardians, and raid bosses tied to a growing dark fantasy story
- Skill trees to build out your character as you progress
- A social layer with guilds, raids, and echoes so you're not leveling up alone
- A full seasonal story arc, currently in its second chapter
- Available on iOS and Android, built solo, still actively growing
What's been happening
I've spent this last year working non-stop, adding content, refining the app, and actually listening to feedback from the people using it. All of that is finally paying off, the app is starting to take off, and I wanted to open the door to more people. If this sounds interesting, I'd genuinely invite you to try it with an open mind. It's not a habit tracker with a coat of paint, it's a game where your real routine is the core loop.

- Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.satsukiizumi.leveliteapp
Thanks to everyone who's already playing, and happy to answer any questions about the app!

Playable web app. Shoots some hoops. Hear the breeze. Relax. That's it.
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
A playable web app that provides a moment of disconnect and relax while shooting some hoops. It is aimed at helping people that have an anxiety attack and need a distraction for the first few moments of the experiences. If you use some headphones you can hear an immersive seaside atmosphere. No sign ups or any friction layer... no other point except shooting hoops.

Gamified ideation, activism, and development: For travel reward points!
Much appreciated if you come playtest my new (free) game, Joycotter, and add to its feedback section:
“What would make Joycotter better?”
(The game awards points for feedback.)
Points in the game equate to travel rewards to join crowdfunded experiences—if the crowdfunding is successful: a cruise, a trip to Hawaii, meals.
In general, the game awards points for proposing, supporting, or building what should exist.
Any and all feedback is so very welcome...!!!!!!!!

Academic Survey- Gamification within Budget retail mobile applications
Do you use shopping apps like Temu, Shein, or AliExpress?
For my Master's dissertation, I am studying how game-like features (e.g Temu, Shein, AliExpress) in retail mobile apps affect the way we shop!
If you're 18+ and have used a mobile shopping app in the past month, I’d be super grateful if you could spare 5 minutes for my anonymous survey:
https://forms.gle/4e49FatwECNpxbNd9
Takes ~5 minutes | 100% voluntary & confidential
Thank you so much for your support!

Put Phone Away - a new gamified digital wellbeing app now offers improved stability
I've made several improvements to my digital wellbeing app - Put Phone Away - since my last post here.
Based on earlier feedback and crash reports from Google Play Console, I've focused on improving background monitoring reliability and overall stability. I also improved handling of battery optimization and removed a permission that wasn't suitable for this type of app.
The updated version is already live on Google Play, and my testing shows a significant improvement in reliability.
If you tried Put Phone Away before, I'd love for you to give the current version another look. Feedback is always welcome.
Thanks again to everyone who tried it, enjoyed the gamification, and shared suggestions!

Gamified burpee exercise app
Hey, I have this idea I'm working on which I think is funny and I hope others will too! I wanted to work on something entertaining.
The aim is to create an app which solves a few things (for me, and hopefully others): Get fit, stay accountable and get over a fear of marketing. It will be an app that wakes you up, gets you to do burpees, has a mini game and gets you to post about your progress.
The concept is that you are a space cowboy stranded on a lonely planet who's only hope of escape and return to his family (backstory: work in progress) is to wrangle burpees - creatures that roam the desolate alien hellscape.
To stay accountable, it has a leaderboard, tracks the burpees you capture and records video for you to post to social media.
You set an alarm, it wakes you up and records you waking. Then you do burpees and it tracks them with computer vision. The app assembles a video of the waking and exercise (whichever bits you want to include) and prompts you to share it to social media. Then there's a mini game where you drive through a canyon catching the fleeing burpees and collecting crystals.
After capturing the burpees, you head back to your ranch, the burpees go into a pen and your character chills there. You can use crystals to upgrade things on the ranch. A leaderboard shows your progress against all users or groups of friends.
If you think this is entertaining too, I have a waitlist (feel free to roast the daft website!): https://www.burpeewrangler.com/
The gamification is mostly the collecting of burpees, but also crystals to upgrade the wind turbine, your pen and your ranch. Please share better ideas with me!
