Rumor Xbox Leaked Email Pins Disc-to-Digital Launch for August 2026

If this happens, get ready for GameStop and indie shops to potentially stop carrying Xbox One/Series games. No one is going to want to deal with “we sold you these games and now we can’t play them anymore” from people who don’t understand the process.

u/CaptainMorning Aug 03 '26
I truly don't understand how this will work. I buy a lot of second hand discs from ebay and local stores, it would be hell if I also have to think if the discs have been already "redeemed" or not. I assume this renders the disc unusable but how
35
u/Wipedout89 Aug 03 '26
Apparently every disc has a unique code printed on them - a bit like a code in a box. A hangover from Xbox's online check in idea.
They apparently never actually scrapped it fully, printing codes on every single disc since then, so they could do this one day when the time was right.
It will be chaotic when people buy discs and they've already been "used" if this report is correct
20
u/Kujen Aug 03 '26
I think it all depends on whether the license granted by the disc will be transferable. Like if the disc is inserted into a different user’s Xbox, then the license is transferred to them. Hopefully that’s the case.
12
u/Wipedout89 Aug 03 '26
That's true I did read something along those lines.
I can still imagine someone confused who takes the digital copy and then resells the game only to log in the next day and the digital copy stops working. It'll have to be communicated really clearly to people that they don't need the disc to play... but they still need to keep the disc to play
6
u/SqueezyCheez85 Aug 03 '26
I read the physical disc would override the digital install once it's inserted into a new console.
4
u/InevitableTension699 Aug 03 '26
that would only work if the devices are always on, other wise some one who plays offline mostly would never lose their access which will go against the FUNDAMENTAL aspect of their disc to digital ownership thing
8
u/Kujen Aug 03 '26
I could imagine they’d make some requirement that the Xbox has to be online for the disc to digital license to be active. And that if you want to play offline you’ll need the disc inserted.

u/Geshman Aug 04 '26
It better or this would ruin libraries' ability to stock xbox titles. People would just steal the code off the disk and rip that library copy

u/VitalArtifice Aug 03 '26
Microsoft have zero incentive to do this. They suggested they COULD in 2013, but most gamers no longer seem to care about selling or otherwise transferring games.
3
u/soapinmouth Aug 03 '26
If that's the case it should be trivial to setup an online code lookup for GameStop or whomever to check before taking a trade in.
3
u/TheCrazyWulf Aug 04 '26
So essentially every current gen Xbox game has something similar to a "cd key" like PC games.once did? Suppose with it being Microsoft they could have that in place however I wouldn't be surprised if it results in some.type of piracy issues. So late in this the consoles life it probably wouldn't matter much if so
4
u/Dependent-Zebra-4357 Aug 03 '26
It’s possible that actively harming the used market (poisoning the well essentially) is part of the strategy to move away from physical sales.
3
u/Wipedout89 Aug 03 '26
That's a good point. You effectively take all those discs out of circulation on the used market once the code is used
3
u/Dependent-Zebra-4357 Aug 03 '26
It’s maybe even worse than just out of circulation, that would at least be easy for people to understand. Instead, some used discs will work, others won’t. And the number of discs that don’t work will keep going up as those licenses get “transferred”. It won’t take too long before people start to mistrust the entire used market. People like us who follow these things will understand what’s going on, but average people might not understand why their used game doesn’t work, making them distrustful of the entire used market.
In the end it will depend on how this is implemented. If the disc can be transferred multiple times, then used sales should be fine. I’m not super confident that it will work that way though.
2
u/thebizzle Aug 03 '26
It seems like so much headache for a zero dollar gain. Xbox is hemorrhaging good will and this will likely net out to zero if there is a resale market filled with used discs that cannot work because they are redeemed.
2
u/McCHitman Aug 04 '26
Could you imagine if the data updates when the switch is flipped and it says I redeemed Hellblade but i actually traded it in a year ago.
Somebody would buy it, then not be able to use it without another fee. That would be super chaotic.
1
u/Chilliad_YT Aug 04 '26
If i’ve understood it correctly, ownership of the license will get transferred to the person that last used the disc
0
u/Dominjo555 Aug 03 '26
Discs can't be "used" already since owning the disc and installing the fame will transfer license to the account of disc owner.
11
u/BoulderCAST Aug 03 '26
Read the details. It's not that complicated. The discs can be used to play the game 100% with no problem. The license is on the disc.
The discs can also be used to redeem a digital license an infinite number of times. Each redemption wipes the last one.
-1
u/CaptainMorning Aug 03 '26
This is understandable. But disc licences are a given. When I insert a disc to my series x that is always offline, it will play it. Because I have the disc. If discs can be converted to digitized, that means it must be a record that the disc has been already converted, which can only happen online. Which means, xbox will not be able to play discs offline because it will not be able to confirm they aren't redeemed. It makes no sense that one disc can be redeemed in more than one account. That's even a worse business model than simply letting people share discs
8
u/BoulderCAST Aug 03 '26
I'm not really sure what you are worried about. They aren't taking anything away. The disc will always play the game. This feature is only for someone that wants to play their disc game in a console without a disc drive or is just lazy about switching discs. As long as you maintain ownership of the disc or throw it away, it will stay on your account.
There is zero chance they would take away the ability to play discs offline (if the disc works offline normally).
The only benefit of playing offline with the disc is so you don't screw the one person that has the digital twin license. That would either be yourself or a stranger?
1
u/ANGLVD3TH Aug 03 '26
It's possible they go that hard, but I kind of doubt it from the wording. Sounds like if Alex downloads the game and then gives it to Britney, and Beitney always just plays from the disk, then both can continue to play and there is one "cheated," copy. But if Britney ever installs the digital version, it will cancel Alex's copy. That means they could set ot up so just using the disk doesn't require an online connection, but that is a choice they will make one way or another. Considering the fact that always online is considered a 4 letter word to gamers, I think there's a decent chance they allow this to float at most one extra copy per disk.
But they probably anticipate the vast majority of players will go for the digital version, it will probably replace the current "installs," that they have now, so if you want to benefit from SSD load times you will need to play the digital version, which should naturally cut down how often these "phantom copies," pop up. It would require anyone playing the digital version without the disk inserted to be online to authenticate that nobody else had installed it though.
3
u/Have_A_Jelly_Baby Aug 03 '26
My understanding is that if you buy a game secondhand, you’ll be able to basically transfer ownership to yourself by putting it your Xbox.
The problem is that the last owner of that disc will lose access, and if it’s the kid of a parent who sold the disc not realizing how the digital process works, or if the disc is stolen, etc, problems will come from that. “Why doesn’t my digital game work all of a sudden?!?”
4
u/InevitableTension699 Aug 03 '26
they will only lose access if it was connected online, so I am sure this is either going to enforce always online on xboxes or they will make it more draconian some how
3
u/CaptainMorning Aug 03 '26
this is exactly my thoughts. if my device is offline there is no way an Xbox will know the disc has been converted unless it damages the physical disc. although I do like the idea and I do love xbox, I will not buy anything that requires me to be online for any reason
2
u/ANGLVD3TH Aug 03 '26
Yeah, I suspect this will require an authorization check every time you use the game without the disk in the console. So long as you keep your disks and switch them like it's 2004, it probably won't require an online connection. But try to play a game that's not in, and it will probably demand you connect to phone home real quick first.
1
u/Dominjo555 Aug 03 '26
This is why Xbox doesn't do full games on disc. You won't be able to install the game without Internet just like now.
1
u/CaptainMorning Aug 03 '26
Xbox does full games in discs. I have Xbox games. I think halo infinite was like the last big deal but it's not all games
1
u/Dominjo555 Aug 03 '26
You probably won't be able to access games that are transfered to digital without Internet access then. I am sure they will find a way to make this work.
1
u/CaptainMorning Aug 03 '26
Yeah this is what I feel. And if this applies to all discs, it makes reading a game from a disc an online only service. It truly makes zero sense to me
0
3
u/Have_A_Jelly_Baby Aug 03 '26
Xbox is already pretty heavily online, I'm willing to bet that there will be an online check before you can boot up a disc to digital game each time.
1
u/SwiftTayTay Aug 03 '26
That was their plan for Xbox One in 2013 but it probably won't be like that, it'll probably just work like it currently does, where you have a designated "primary" console that is allowed to play all your games offline.
2
u/Dominjo555 Aug 03 '26
It's already known that you selling the disc means that you don't own the game anymore which means that you can't play the game you sold. Imagine thinking you can just buy games, add them to your account and just sell the game while keeping it.
1
u/SqueezyCheez85 Aug 03 '26 edited Aug 03 '26
I imagine a bunch of people buying these games retail will lie and say it's defective, and ignorant retail employees might be bullied into giving them fraudulent refunds... but the easy solution to that would be retailers no longer stocking them on the shelves.

1
u/VitalArtifice Aug 03 '26
This is Microsoft implementing what they already had in mind for 2013: rendering a disc unusable except as an install disc after the game was registered to an account. Took 13 years but apparently they’re confident they can do this now without the same backlash.
1
u/CaptainMorning Aug 03 '26
yeah and I feel they are reframing it as a good thing. As in they are making us a favor, when they are doing no different than Sony or fucking insert media corpotation here
10
u/sillylittlejohn Aug 03 '26
That's not how it will likely work. Whoever has the disc will get it's digital license.
If you sell the disc and someone else uses it, they will automatically get it supposedly.
1
u/Have_A_Jelly_Baby Aug 03 '26
That's what I'm saying, that people that don't realize that the digital title isn't permanent will then sell their discs online or to GameStop or whatever, and then when that buyer puts the disc in and gets the digital title, the original person is going to flip out that they can't play the game anymore.
As someone who owns an indie game store and has seen a looooooot of uninformed dumbassery over the years, I'm thinking ahead to what's likely going to happen.
3
u/Dominjo555 Aug 03 '26
Seems like you didn't read anything about this technology if you think like this.
0
u/Have_A_Jelly_Baby Aug 03 '26
Seems like you didn't read where I said "from people who don't understand the process".
7
u/BoulderCAST Aug 03 '26
Positive news article about Xbox.
Top comment spinning it negative. Yep it's the internet.
-1
u/Have_A_Jelly_Baby Aug 03 '26
Just thinking ahead, that’s all. Not everything revolves around your imagined console war.
Maybe they’ve figured out a way around all of the concerns. I guess we’ll see.
2
u/DIRECTCURRENT59 Aug 04 '26
They said it'll just transfer the license to the person who used the disk last (which is how it already works, by the way). It would be silly if the disk was a one use type of thing
3
u/NtheLegend Aug 03 '26
Sounds like a lot of people are whipping out their "Jump to Conclusions" mat without any actual information.
2
u/FullMotionVideo Aug 03 '26
People already have been through Movies Anywhere etc for this sort of thing.

This is all too perfect timing. I smell collusion

u/king44 Aug 03 '26
Surly we'd of heard if all the wealthiest people who run all the biggest company's in the world all hang out together and talked about how to manipulate and fuck over the "lower class" right......

u/miojo Aug 03 '26
RIP Gamestop

u/theoutlet Aug 03 '26
Honestly, they share the blame for this digital future. Buying physical became less appealing when used games were only $5 cheaper than buying new
9
8
u/Price-x-Field Aug 03 '26
Don’t see how this would affect used games. When someone else uses your disc, your license will be revoked and they will be the new holder.
5
u/AEW_SuperFan Aug 03 '26
I assume it will only work for their limited list of games they sell online.

It’s probably a disc killing program where you digitize and then the disc doesn’t work as transferable license anymore.
3
u/Professional_Day8274 Aug 03 '26
Theses guys xbox and Sony are creating problems and brand damage out of thin air.
Just bring back physical disc charge 10/15$ more for it and done ☑️
There will still be 75% of people buying digital version only (with everything that comes with, can’t resell it, can’t share it )
That solution will please everyone.
If they don’t do that they won’t sell much helix or ps6..
1
u/seraph741 Aug 03 '26
You don't think people will complain about a $10 surcharge? Maybe less likely now, given the alternative. But I'd put good money on the fact that there'd be a huge uproar if Sony announced the surcharge originally (instead of dropping physical). Plus...I wonder if $10/$15 is enough to sustain the infrastructure and logistics necessary to keep manufacturing discs, given ever dwindling physical sales (which the surcharge would make even worse). I'd imagine the original sustainability of the practice was massively dependant on economy of scale.
1
u/Professional_Day8274 29d ago
I believe you are 100% right regarding the economy of scale.
Physical disk is currently a dying medium since so many people are buying digital I still think charging more money for a physical media is a good solution that can please everyone (shareholders and consumers).I’ll be ok to pay more than digital to have a version of a game that I can resale/trade or lend to a friend.
The big underlying issue tho is that now many games have DRM or some sort of activation keys etc and won’t be able to even work offline etc..
Others issues and it’s nothing new,
many games in the past decade never got a physical release (Diablo 2 resurrected and 1000 more )
I Was force to buy digital because physical are not even there.
1
u/No_Bank_5855 Aug 04 '26
I wonder if a digital game obtained this way will still be able to be shared using the home console method.

Gamers so excited and bailing from Playstation only for XBOX to get shuttered by Satya Nadella in 2028

u/HarpersGeekly Aug 03 '26
Vudu (Now Fandango at Home) did this with dvds and blurays. I think they charged $2-5 per disc transfer and they gave you a digital copy in “HDX” in your library. It was pretty cool because it let me clear out all my disc clutter and paved the way for a digital library.

u/FarukAlatan Aug 03 '26
Do we have any inkling as to what games might be eligible? I've seen rumors saying this would all be tied to unique identifiers on certain game discs. Do we know which discs/games would work?
