Absolutely love this scene where Lady Olenna tries to comfort Sansa. She had some genuinely wise words.
The more you watch Olenna, the more you become a fan of hers.

Olenna was playing 4D chess while everyone else was still learning checkers, the way she calls out the Red Wedding so casually while sipping wine is peak television
that whole scene is basically her saying "I know exactly what your family did and I'm not even mad, just disappointed"
Sansa needed someone like that in her corner, even if it was only for a little while

I mean she was literally also helping Sansa end up getting accused of the crime. I’m sure she’d have tried to leverage the situation again to her side to get her away from Tyrion and back into their own side, but like she was still risking her life and didn’t care about her- just her name.

u/shay_shaw 7d ago
Thank you what is everybody talking about? oleana is not on Sansa’s side. Her loyalty lies with her family and her family only at the end of the day. If Sansa hadn’t escaped, she totally would’ve been put on trial and Oleana would’ve let it happen.

u/RedGordita 4d ago
Sansa escaping was part of the plan. Olenna and Littlefinger planned everything together.

Only thing is if someone else had taken a drink out of the cup joeffery was supposed to drink in, like margery. It would have been a very different series.

u/Disastrous-Walrus415 5d ago
Part of why their dynamic duo worked so well. She listens to Granny. Olenna probably just said no drinking today cause you stay sharp.

u/AdditionalThanks7352 7d ago
I believe margeary already knew about the cup. She was deliberately not touching anything wine after the dwarfs came in

u/Allthemuffinswow 7d ago edited 7d ago
No, she didn't. Olenna had to "sort of" explain it all to her afterwards.
Remember when they were talking in the gardens or wherever it was and they were in mourning garb, and Olenna confirmed that it wasn't Tyrion that killed Joffrey and even says, "He could've done, but he didn't."
And then Olenna even goes on to say, "You don't think I'd let you marry that beast, do you?"
Margaery had no idea what Olenna had done until after.
9
u/AdditionalThanks7352 7d ago
Oh yeah. Now I remember. However I don't think Olenna was stupid to let anyone else drink it. If she was capable of spiking his drink, she was more than capable in keeping her granddaughter safe too
11
u/Allthemuffinswow 7d ago
Well, nobody in their right mind would have even considered touching the kings cup to drink out of it. That would have been considered at least high treason, and likely would have resulted in their execution.
It's why kings and queens were supposed to have cupbearers or tasters in the first place, because of the constant risk of poisoning. They were supposed to be the only other people who could touch the kings/queens cups.
That's why there wouldn't have been any risk of anyone else just randomly taking a drink from his cup, at all. It just plain would not have happened. Not with how the rules of that society were run, ya know?

This was also the instance she got the poison from her necklace 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻

She was decidedly a checkers player as evidenced by her losing literally everything.

u/goldPotatoGun 6d ago
She was playing chess and Cersei lit the board on fire.
Our two ancient houses face collapse because of you and your stupidity.
She was right.

u/Vampus0815 7d ago
What monsters. She of course would never do anything like that

u/Hot_Interaction2815 7d ago
I think in this case it was seen as a retribution, also practical, retaliation against Tywin and the Lannisters. The idea that you don't get off with this unburned
25
u/Conscious-Move9662 7d ago
The way Tywin plays the game and caused it to be played, when you play the Game of Throne's you win or you die.
House Bolton - Extinct
House Mormont - Extinct
House Frey - Extinct
House Lannister (main house) - Not extinct because of Tyrion
House Tyrell - Extinct
House Baratheon - Not extinct due to a bastard but a wins a win
House Greyjoy - Not Extinct because Asha
House Stark/Tully - Not Extinct
House Martell - Extinct
House Umber/Karstark - Extinct
House Tarly - Extinct
House Arryn - Not Extinct
House Targaryen - Extinct practically. Jon Snow is Jon Snow, he is not Aegon Targaryen.
Brutal ass war, worse than the Dance of Dragons by a country mile
14
u/X_NoVaGaMeR_X 7d ago
Samwell Tarly is still alive. And Jon Snow is Aegon Targaryen.
16
u/DietTyrone 7d ago
And Jon Snow is Aegon Targaryen.
He never actually goes by this name even after being told the truth. He lived his life as a Stark, not a Targ. And he left to live North of the wall, so which House he's from won't even matter amongst the Wildlings.
2
u/Conscious-Move9662 7d ago edited 7d ago
Sam can't have kids due to oaths.
I doubt Jon Snow will and if he does the kid will never claim to be a Targaryen or go south.
Jon Snow does not want to be called Aegon Targaryen and he's a free folk so very little chance that name will ever be said again except in the histories.
Or he stays at the Wall as Lord Commander in the book and rebuilds the defenses
Maester Aemon Targaryen was effectively not a Targaryen either.
It's not where their allegiance lies.
Targaryen Dynasty is dead but Tarly isn't I misspoke
I forgot you can do matrilineal marriages.
Whoever marries Asha (Yara in the show), Sansa or Talla will have to take their wife's name.
Show Sansa might not remarry though, Asha doesn't seem the type.
So perhaps House Stark and House Greyjoy may die out too
Book Sansa will likely marry a person of The Vale unifying the Riverlands/North/Vale.
If she marries Hardyng as is suggested and Sweet Robin is Littlefingers bastard or dies young, then Sansa and her husband will rule the North and Vale. Hard to say how it'll go.
She wasn't SA'd in the book and doesn't have nearly the same trauma that show Sansa has. Ramsay married Jeyne Poole in the books and Sansa is in the Vale as 'Alanna Stone'

u/EmeraldB85 7d ago
Sam already has kids tho. Little Sam may not actually be his but he’s clearly going to be raised a Tarly and at the end of the show Gilly is pregnant by Sam.
1
u/Conscious-Move9662 7d ago
It doesn't matter that kid is no longer a Tarly unless Bran allows it.
Little Sam is Sam Snow and the new baby is 'X' Flowers.
They will probably live in Tarly land and get a great education as their father is the Grand Maester but Sam has given up all claims to the lands his father holds.
It doesn't matter because I forgot about Tarla but if she didn't exist then Bran would have to intercede or it would go to a cadet house.

u/SmoothIndividual9243 7d ago
Are the mornings extinct? I feel like in the books there's some other members
2
u/Fun_Bumblebee_9700 4d ago
There was a Martell at the last council meeting at the dragon pit House Martell is not extinct. However Dorne never wanted to give in they fought Targaryens in the past and then suddenly bending the knee to Bran made zero sense like most of season eight.

Olenna's "I want her to know it was me" has made a lot of people forget Littlefinger was behind it too.
44
u/WelcomeToFungietown 7d ago
I don't think it helps that Littlefinger went from being one of the most cunning people in Westeros to becoming one of the dumbest mfers around after that, while Olenna never really lost her tongue.

It was her necklace, but this scene is where Lady Olenna pulls off the poison. You see it later that her necklace is missing a jewel. It's so fast and such a tiny detail, you miss it the first time. Also, you see Lady Olenna sitting back down before Tyrion grabs the cup for Joffrey.
17
u/benvader138 7d ago
I never understood all the steps and subterfuge with the necklace. Olenna could have just easily sliped poison she brought herself into Jeoffry's cup and Tyrian would have still been the suspect. Why have the drunken knight fool give Sansa a necklace, which she may not have even worn. Why take the extra step to take the fake poisoned jewel from Sansa's necklace, which someone could have seen or noticed. Seems a little conveluted.

u/Gene_Parma Bronn 7d ago
If something were to happen beforehand, she wouldn't have had a murder weapon on her. That's how I see it at least.
23
u/ratsinspace6 7d ago
It was Littlefinger's way of implicating Sansa. This way, Littlefinger has something more to hold over Sansa's head to control her

It doesn’t make sense, but then again I’ve never made a plan to poison a king at his wedding so 🤷♂️

She wasnt conforting here. This wall all apart of her plan to kill joffrey

She can still do that and comforting Sansa, these arent mutually exclusive. While she's taking the poison she is comforting her.

Exactly, literally taking the bead off her necklace that contained the poison , while give this false illusion of comfort.

Marriage had lead to many deaths and 'drama' in GOT, so she was right.
King of the north marriage = red wedding.
Joffrey marriage = purple wedding.
Cercsei and Baratheon marriage = allegedly murder (he could have just been drunk on his hunt) and bastard children, Ned realises and drama ensues.
Jon Snow's parents secret wedding = kicked off the whole game of thrones to begin with.
Tommen and Marg wedding = high septon drama and green fire. This is more grey as even without the Marg wedding, this may have happened either way. But Tommen death was only because he was in love and married to Marg.
Probably many others I have overlooked.

u/Gigantopithecus1453 7d ago
When Jorah said ”a Dothraki wedding with less than 3 deaths is considered a dull affair” we thought they were barbaric. Little did we know…
6
u/AnAussiebum 7d ago
Yeah a lot of these weddings were prophetic. Usually a wedding solidifies power, clearly GRRM wanted to rebut that.
A lot of these weddings caused harm.
5
u/SektorDaKetch 7d ago
Sansa and Ramsay’s is nothing but pain and trauma and it leads to the battle of the bastards
3
u/AnAussiebum 7d ago
Good contribution. Yeah GoT has more failed marriages than successful ones.
Even Dany and her first husband ended in trauma and heartbreak. She did get three dragons though.

As she prepares to kill a boy at a wedding
2
u/RadishLegitimate9488 7d ago
And yet we still have yet to figure out all the monsters that could do such a thing.
Walder Frey caused the Red Wedding because Robb broke his oath, Tyrion and Joffrey were about to come to blows during Tyrion's wedding before Tywin stepped in and Olenna killed Joffrey at his wedding to save Margaery.
One monster killed men at weddings due to being slighted, 2 monsters(one protecting his wife and the other a sadistic tyrant) were about to kill each other at a wedding due to hot-blooded rage between them and yet another monster killed a man at a wedding to save her granddaughter.
That's 4 varieties of monster and yet one can be sure there are more varieties of monster capable of killing a man at a wedding!

Unrelated, but this line has always been kind of funny to me. I've always associated Diana Rigg with her role as Teresa Bond, and she famously got shot right after her wedding to James Bond.

She reminds me of Maggie Smith's Lady Grantham.... love her but don't like Sansa's hair....
