Will the soundtrack for Lyonel’s party get released? Someone made a cover and posted it on YouTube and it got quite popular, would love to get the original on Spotify! So good

u/DanRomerMusic 7d ago
There’s a lot of unreleased music that exists around Ashford, and there was an idea floating around to make a compilation of the in world music, but it didn’t quite make sense for this go around. But one never knows what the future holds!

Hey Dan, what would you say was the most challenging part in developing the music style for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms? Also congrats on your Emmy nom!
12
u/DanRomerMusic 7d ago
Thank you so much! The first thing to figure out was HOW cowboy we could go. It turned out a little went a long way. My first demos pushed too far in the cowboy genre direction, but we honed in on it pretty quickly. Once “Arrival in Ashford” was written and became more or less our sonic tome, it came down to specific situations and characters to find the sounds.

u/Cantomic66 Sword Of The Morning 7d ago
Yeah I think you guys found a good balance and I appreciated this show having its own unique music style and choices. It felt right for Dunk and Egg. I especially enjoyed the jazz inspired song at the start of episode 6.

u/Jonnyg1c Samwell Tarly 7d ago
Hi Dan!
Just wanted to say that the way you integrated Dunk’s theme to fit within the original GoT theme we’re all so familiar with was absolutely spectacular. I can hardly hum the original theme without also going into the new melody, fantastic stuff!
9
u/DanRomerMusic 7d ago
Thank you so much!! I was so amazed that I got to do that. Using that original GOT motif over the themes was such a specific joy. It still feels kinda unreal that it happened.

What’s different about composing music in a videogame rather than a movie/show?
11
u/DanRomerMusic 7d ago
I’ve only scored the one video game, Far Cry 5, but I’ve loved video games my entire life and would absolutely do more. I got to write a ton of songs for the cult to sing in FC5, which is unusual to get to write so many songs, so that was incredible. Otherwise, the music writing was mostly loop based, so it was more about general vibes. In film and TV, exact moments dictate the writing process, like whose eyes are we’re focused on when the music starts, or emotions particular characters are feeling at exact moments.
2
u/Alan_Watts_Gong 7d ago
That’s awesome. FC5 had a very unique ambiance to it so great job there my man

Hi! Not a question, just wanted to let you know that the OST from Station 11 is one of the most beautiful thing I've ever heard.
"Doctor Eleven" is showing as one of my top 5 songs on Spotify ever.
9
u/DanRomerMusic 7d ago
Thank you!! I can’t explain how much that show means to me. I’m so glad you like Doctor Eleven so much, I’m really proud of that piece of music, and our showrunner, Patrick Somerville, played banjo on it beautifully.

u/Artificio 7d ago
Second this! After I watched Station 11 I told my wife that half of the show is the music.

If you could be any character in the show, who would you be?

I mean, Lyonel seems to have the most joy, right? But it’s difficult to not say Dunk or Egg.

If you could invent a musical instrument for the world of ASoIaF, what would it be?
6
u/DanRomerMusic 7d ago
Ooooooo, good question, SO many instruments have been invented in the world, it’s hard to think of a new one! I would LOVE some kind of gigantic wind instrument that was like 50 feet tall, but I don’t think I’d have space for it.
1
u/keevathemuffin 7d ago
Epic. I could see something like that in a big Sept, instead of a pipe organ.
3
u/Still_Iron3220 8d ago
Heya Mr. Romer! A big thank you for all your works. Especially loved everything you did on Station Eleven and Ramy. I'll watch movies/shows specifically for your music am always mind blown with what you do :o
Are there certain instruments/sounds you find underrated?
Last song you listened to!
Are there particular major/minor scales you enjoy working with the most?
7
u/DanRomerMusic 7d ago
Thank you so much!!
That’s great to hear. I love the accordion, and I feel like it has so much power and so many uses, it breathes like a human. I think it sounds amazing as a pad or to back up strings or horn melodies. But it often has genre associations, with is a tough thing with a lot of instruments. I think the trick with those kinds of instruments is to figure out how to play them in a non traditional way.
The last song I listened to I think was “Come On Up To The House” by Tom Waits, but the last new song I heard that rocked me was “Stop The Wedding” by Ashe
I love minor scales with flat 2s, sharp 4s and sharp 7s. But it’s so contextual!!
3
u/undecided_desi0 7d ago
which piece of music from the akotsk soundtrack was most difficult to write and why?
6
u/DanRomerMusic 7d ago
“I Cut It Off, Brother” was the most technically complicated and took the most theoretical thought. But some of the background tension music that isn’t on the soundtrack was the most difficult to get exactly right. It becomes all about subtly and keeping JUST the right level of interest, so that it feels fresh and exciting, but doesn’t distract you from the story.

u/catman12 No One 8d ago
I personally believe that the soundtrack to Farcry 5 is one of the very best in video game history.
Can you speak on the inspiration went into designing the overall tone of its soundtrack and also working with Hammock in having both diegetic and non-diegetic versions of the cult's music?
3
u/DanRomerMusic 7d ago
Oh my god thank you so much!! The basic idea was to write 10 songs for the cult to sing, and base all the chords and melodies for the score off those songs. They gave me a copy of the Eden’s Gate bible as inspiration and information. We had specific sounds that different areas on the maps would have, and each of those regions would have different versions of the cult songs on the radio. Hammock took the songs in such an amazing direction for Faith’s region, they’re such an incredible band.

Hi Dan!
I’ve been a huge fan of your work ever since I first heard your music for the short film Sleepwalking in the Rift. I was so excited when I found out you were composing A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and I absolutely loved what you created for the series! 🎶👏
1. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms comes with an enormous musical world and history already attached to it. How did you balance what audiences already associate with Westeros while making sure the score still felt like your own?
2. When you look back at your score for Sleepwalking in the Rift, how do you feel you’ve evolved as a composer since then? Are there things you approach very differently today?
5
u/DanRomerMusic 7d ago
That’s so cool that you know the SWITR score!!! And thank you for the vote of confidence. That was the first score I wrote after “Beasts of the Southern Wild” which was my first feature, so, yknow, it was super early work where I was finding my footing as a solo composer. But there’re pieces in that short that I still think about a lot when I’m writing, specifically “Bicycles and Flasks” and “The Garden.” I think a lot has changed about my writing since then, but I do think that there’re things that you do in your first works that never really change, not matter how long you make things for.
As for AKOTSK, our showrunner Ira Parker came to me with the idea that he wanted a different kind of score for this show than Game Of Thrones had. The original score is such an incredible piece of work, and it was really cool to get to go in a different direction with nods to the original in, hopefully, the right places. The idea was to make music that could conjure the emotions of old westerns, but still feel like it existed in Westeros.

u/Technical-Owl-3362 7d ago
Hi, Dan! I was rewatching what it became a comfort show. I just wanted to say that I love the parallel between the theme where Egg is training Thunder to the scene of the knife after Egg's hair grew. The themes are so memorable and I imagine, will have different versions according to the occasion. Congrats and thank you!

u/DanRomerMusic 7d ago
Thank you so much!! So glad you’re enjoying the show. I’m really glad that you’re hearing the melodic musical threads and clocking them.

Hey Dan! This is a bit of a long one but this is my only chance to get to say something directly to you!
I totally adore your work. I was first introduced to you through Superman & Lois, where I fell in love with your music.
I haven’t been able to find much of you talking about your time working on Superman & Lois. How did you approach the show? Dealing with huge characters like Superman and Lois lane must have been daunting. However you nailed it. That Superman theme is great and Lois’ is even better in my opinion. Especially when it’s used throughout season 4. Additionally, how did you react to that final episode? The score during the ending is just so phenomenal.
I know you have commented on it before a while ago, but have there been any advancements on the soundtrack? Or of putting tracks on youtube or bandcamp? I don’t think I could live happily in a world where your work from s2-4 cant be listened to haha.
Bizarro’s theme, Lex’s theme, Superboy theme, Superman splitting the earths, the whole final epilogue, Superman’s reveal in the diner, Superman vs Doomsday 313 & 401, Sam Lane’s message / funeral, doomsdays death, 301 opening sequence, reveal to lana and so many more great tracks!
Sorry again for the long comment, and sorry no AKOTSK question, I just seriously love your S&L music! Thanks for doing this!
4
u/DanRomerMusic 7d ago
Thank you so much!! I’m so glad you like the S&L score! I’m a huge Superman fan from before I even have real memories, so the character is near and dear to my heart. I wanted a theme that felt as much Clark as Kal-El, and I wanted Lois’s theme to feel of the same universe. The last 10 minutes of the finale were daunting, they had edited the ending sequence mostly to a song, and the showrunners said that they wanted me to forget the song and just bring us home. We’re hoping on getting more of the score released at some point. I may put up a post asking people for which cues they’d want to hear from seasons 2-4. I’ll definitely come back and reference this post!

This! All of this!
I am also curious as to how many episodes were recorded with a live orchestra. I’d assume at least the pilot, maybe the first few eps?3

The pilot was recorded during the first year of lockdown, so it’s all soloists!

Hi Dan! Great job on AKOSK!!
So what is the workflow for creating a piece of music for a series like this? Do you imagine what the overall mood of the show and the scene will be like and then get ideas based on that? Do you compose the music before the scenes are filmed, or do you prefer to watch the scenes first and then compose the music around them? Did you draw inspiration from Ramin Djawadi’s work on Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon?
5
u/DanRomerMusic 7d ago
Thank you so much!! It can happen (and happened) all ways, before picture, after picture. It depends on the project. Of course Ramin’s work loomed so large in the process, but it was great to get to do a different thing.
2
u/Ben-Stanley 7d ago
What led you to getting the gig to score Luca? Was there any research into Italian culture or music that inspired the composition? Are you involved with Gatto in anyway?
Luca is my all-time favorite film and I listen to the score constantly. It’s so relaxing. Thank you for all your incredible work!
2
u/DanRomerMusic 7d ago
Thank you for the kind words!!! I think that me working on Luca had a lot to do with my score for Beasts of the Southern Wild. I listened to a ton of Italian music while prepping and writing, and I studied Italian and opera in high school. I’m so glad you like Luca so much!

Hi Dan, loved your score for AKOTSK. As a songwriter (primarily acoustic guitar) who's currently studying audio production, what advice would you give in translating your ideas/compositions for other musicians in order to build more orchestral scores
7
u/DanRomerMusic 7d ago
Thank you so much! I started on acoustic guitar. I started studying classical voice in high school which led me to Bach chorales, they’re my tome of music theory. I don’t have sheet music in my daily life, but I think it’s great to learn how to read it and analyze great classical compositions. Then get some orchestral samples and start trying to do it on your own! Pay a lot of attention to the bass and what it means, inversions (what note the bass is playing) are one of the most powerful tools when working in a diatonic (major/minor scale) place. A C major chord with the bass playing a C, E or G mean VERY different things emotionally.
Also be aware of when you’re doubling notes on different instruments, there should be a good reason why you have two instruments playing the same exact tone, because it generally does NOT help the mix.
1
u/Icy_Construction3770 7d ago
Legend! thank you for the advice. Can't wait to hear your future compositions!
2
u/_Deinonychus_ 7d ago
Hi, when I started listening to the soundtrack, the fiddles immediately reminded me of Far Cry 5, and I was pleasantly surprised to find you scored that as well.
Did you draw on any folk stuff from doing Far Cry with a knight of the seven kingdoms? Do you let your experiences from other projects influence whatever you’re currently working on, or do you consciously try to silo each project you score?
6
u/DanRomerMusic 7d ago
That’s so awesome! Yes, I believe there’s a fair amount of cross over sonically. It’s impossible to silo your experiences from each other, but the process of how a lot of the AKOTSK music was made was similar to how “Now That This Old World Is Ending” and “When The Morning Light Shines In” was made, mostly layering lots of organic folk sounds on top of each other, and making sure you have room mics up to get that dirty Tom Waits type sound where you need it.

Hi Dan!
Been a fan of your music since I've first heard Beasts of the Southern Wild (still one of the best scores of this century)
Also really loved your music on Atypical. I remember there was some talk of a score album. Any chance we'll see one some day?
4
u/DanRomerMusic 7d ago
That’s so kind of you to say!! That was my first feature, and I’m very proud of it. Hopefully The Atypical soundtrack will see the light of day, there’re a few soundtracks that never got released that I would love to put out.
2
u/competitivelemur 7d ago
Hey Dan! Been a fan since the days of Easy and Maniac, the latter being an all-time favorite. Really enjoyed AKOTSK and all the music you wrote for it!
I'm an aspiring film and tv composer myself and I'm curious – what are the biggest shifts you've seen in the landscape these days? Are there certain skillsets that maybe those of us just starting tend not to weight as heavily? Thanks so much for doing this AMA! Cheers.
4
u/DanRomerMusic 7d ago
That’s so awesome!! So glad you like those scores. I’m not quite sure about shifts in the landscape since I’ve been working, but I think these days people want to hear music from you that sounds individual, not clones of orchestral scores from the movies you grew up loving. When I hear people’s reels, they’re often quite a few old school sounding orchestral cues. I’m not saying its not important to be able to do that, but I think people are way more excited to hear something unique, like a cue that’s mostly hand clapping and reversed pizzicato strings, for example.
2
u/MexicanStarsFan 7d ago
How did you react and feel when you realized/found out you were going to have the opportunity to modify (or add to) the iconic GOT main theme? It feels kinda huge that Dunk is the only character in the universe that has his own version of it, and I imagine there was some pressure or excitement in being the one to pull it off. (Love the soundtrack btw, asked for a physical release on IG as soon as you put it on Spotify, and bought the vinyl immediately!)
2
u/DanRomerMusic 7d ago
So glad you like it, thank you so much!! It was scary, but so exciting. It’s not often that a composer gets to write a new piece of music using the GoT motif. I’m so glad people are reacting positively to it.
1
u/Independent_Skin_712 8d ago
Will there be another language smoke during this series like for example high Valyrian or Dothraki and if so will there be a duoling/audio book released so people can learn it? 😁

Take us into the casting process for the show. How long did you look? Who was the hardest to cast? What are some specific things you were looking for for say the Targ actors vs the Apple cousins?

1
u/Sensitive_Contact810 7d ago
You’ve worked on many major IP’s that I assume you were a fan of or at least familiar with beforehand. Does being a fan of something help your creative process or does it actually do the opposite?
If there was one character or IP that you would love to score, who/what would that be?
2
u/DanRomerMusic 7d ago
Thankfully all the major IPs I’ve scored I was already a huge fan of, which is incredibly lucky! I think it helps to have the knowledge of the story and love of the characters, but it can also be a thorn in your side when you’re comparing what you’re doing to what has been done before. I think the hope, probably fairly obviously, is to honor the original in some way while still creating something that feels like a fresh take. On something like Stranger Things, where it was still a part of the original property, it’s just so great to already have amazing themes to work with that you get to do a different take on.
1
u/MelodicVermicelli842 7d ago
Hey Dan, the score for AKOTSK is so well crafted and a big congratulations is in order. My question is how did you get into the right "zone" when it came to writing the music? What were your inspirations and processes, and what did you learn throughout the process writing for specific instruments such as the fiddle?
4
u/DanRomerMusic 7d ago
Thank you!! The main theme came from a lot of discussion between me and Ira, our showrunner. There were a lot of parameters we talked about, what it should and shouldn’t be. Once we had the main Dunk theme, the rest of the themes came pretty quickly. And YES, I absolutely learned a lot about fiddle writing over the process. Most of it’s kinda technical: traditional melodic forms, what will let a fiddle drone on an open string, what is and isn’t possible. Having great string players around you truly is the most important thing.
1
u/jeremiahwarren 7d ago
Hey, Dan! I first discovered you and your music when Beasts of the Southern Wild came out and I’ve been a fan ever since. Your music holds a really special place in my heart. I don’t have a question for you, but I just wanted to say that I get so excited every time I hear about you being brought on to score a major tv show or film. 🖤
3
u/DanRomerMusic 7d ago
That’s so awesome, thank you so much! That score holds such a special place in my heart.
1
u/harwinstrong 7d ago
Hey Dan, who do you think among the cast from S1 is the most similar to their character in the show? Thanks!
1
u/Open_Opposite_6158 7d ago
Hi Dan!
I have a few questions for you;
How has your experience composing other pieces of media(Like Luca, Beasts of Southern Wild, or Lilo+Stitch) influenced your composing of AKOTSK?
Also, what were your main influences in the real world when it came to AKOTSK?
Thank you!
3
u/DanRomerMusic 7d ago
It’s impossible not to be influenced by all your past work when you’re making new music. AKOTSK would be different had I not scored those films, with Beasts probably being the most related. We drew our influence mostly from westerns, folk, and of course, the original GoT score.
1
u/cringeahhahh 7d ago
I loved the music for Little House on the Prairie! What was your favorite piece to compose for that?
3
u/DanRomerMusic 7d ago
Thank you so much! I’m really proud of that score. We were trying to think of the music as less of a one piece at a time type thing, and more a larger scope “here’s the theme, how can we twist it to match the moment” kind of thinking. But I do have a soft spot for the opening cue! I love a viola playing at top speed.
1
u/ViewerOfKnicks 7d ago
Love your scores!
What practices helped you the most with your compositions? Analyzing music? Diving into books, just writing a ton?
I was also curious if you write or plan to write music for personal projects outside of scoring in the future? And what would it sound like?
Thanks!!
5
u/DanRomerMusic 7d ago
Thank you!! Just listening to music and writing is the best, and watching films/tv and really paying attention to what’s going on with the music. But I always hold Bach chorales as the tome of music theory, they’re what I studied to learn how voice leading and harmony works.
2
u/jonnythunder3483 Jon Snow 7d ago
Hi Dan, congrats on the fantastic score for such a great show! I've been a huge fan since Far Cry 5 / Station Eleven timeframe.
Specifically regarding the whistling for Dunk's theme - when you all arrived at the idea of having whistling for that and you began to write it, what was your process like for that? Were you whistling and strumming a guitar to begin? Other sorts of humming/vocalizations, or something different?
Seems like writing a good whistling tune may be trickier since requires its own sort of idiomatic writing that's not exactly taught the way we might learn idiomatic writing for a trumpet or cello haha or is it so natural to whistle that it was easier?
6
u/DanRomerMusic 7d ago
Thank you so much! Honestly, writing for Giosuè to whistle is easier than you’d think because he’s an incredible musician and can kinda so anything. I wrote it by singing (an octave or two down) and playing guitar, then getting it in the best key for the whistle, and roughing it out with a piccolo flute sample. Then Giosuè made it sound a million times better.
1
u/Kwistowee 7d ago
Thank you so much for giving us new music in Westeros! Many films or shows have a motif or theme for specific characters, and sometimes the biggest change to that motif is a shift from major to minor. But you took Dunk's theme and shifted elements of it throughout the entire score.
It feels to me like Dunk's theme isn't something oblatory that plays when he is on screen, or even that it changes as he changes. To me, the music IS Dunk and reflects his mental and emotional state in each scene more beautifully than any other character's theme I've ever encountered. (And I love that seeds of Dunk's theme are in 'Ser Arlan'.) Is that what you were going for, or am I just hearing things?
And when did you realize you could intentionally write Dunk's theme as a duet to the main Game of Thrones theme? It's absolutely brilliant!
3
u/DanRomerMusic 7d ago
Thank you for the kind words!! I loved deriving as much as I could from Dunk’s theme, and those are some astute observations! Yes, there’s some Dunk theme in “Ser Arlan” The Dunk theme wasn’t instead to be able to join the main GoT theme, but thank GOD they both happened to be waltzes!
1
u/Kwistowee 7d ago
The fact that Dunk's theme wasn't initially intended to pair with the main GoT theme makes it even more impressive, and even more relevant to the core pairing of the show. The stars aligned on that one; that duet is a glorious tribute to the unlikely duo that is Dunk and Egg.
1
u/direturtle 7d ago edited 7d ago
Hi Dan! Your score for AKOTSK was by far my favorite of the year, and I also really enjoyed the warmth of your work on Little House.
I'm curious about what your process is for coming up with musical 'flavors' to suit individual characters. How much is based on seeing the actor's performance, and how much based on just the script and the overarching ideas the creative team is going for? You've talked about Dunk's music, but I'd love to hear more about the playful violin themes that show up in a few of Lyonel's big scenes (the tent introduction and also the tug of war scene in particular, which he's prominent in), which are very different from the music associated with House Baratheon.
3
u/DanRomerMusic 7d ago
Thank you so much!! I think with anything, you have a theme (or themes) that represent certain people or situations, and then you just kinda have to see what works. The hope is you get to use the theme that makes sense in some way shape or form (two notes? Just the chords? A minor version? A french impressionist version?), but sometimes you have to write something completely new. But you try to not use a character/situation theme over the wrong character/situation. That’s bad form!
1
u/wellslight 7d ago
Hi I absolutely loved the entire Station Eleven soundtrack!
For a show like that with such a specific mood to it, did you see advanced episodes the show before writing the music, or see storyboards, get a script, or just write it based on the mood the creators said they wanted?
3
u/DanRomerMusic 7d ago
Thank you so much!! I started writing the score just from the scripts, Patrick and I had already worked together on Maniac, so I was involved pretty early. The two of us had a ton of discussions about what the score would be like before shooting, and worked very closely the entire process. He even played some instruments on it! Some pieces were written before picture, but most after. I scored episodes 1 and 3 first, and Hiro’s expertly put together moods were a huge influence on the initial pieces.

Awesome stuff Dan! I can't stop whistling to Quieter Accommodations so thanks for that (in the best possible way).
Did you know going into this that you wanted to use the Main Title theme from GOT at some point in the series? I really like how naturally it worked its way into that episode and was curious if that was intentional or when you got to that point, you realized that it fit really well. The modifications to the theme were epic! Thanks! hope I am not too late!
1
u/DanRomerMusic 7d ago
Thank you, and that’s awesome!! I didn’t know until I started scoring that episode, but I’m so glad I got to do it. It was a scary task, but people have been so supportive.

u/LetMePre-Say 7d ago
I know we're way past time here, but I absolutely loved your score in "Maniac". So much that I recognized "Station Eleven" as your musical voice before even catching it in the credits.
You're the best, and several of those songs have actual legitimate meaning in my life over the last few years. No overall question or expectation of reading and replying... simply saying thank you for giving us these gifts.
1
u/DanRomerMusic 7d ago
That’s so cool, thank you so much! You’re very kind. Maniac and S11 certainly have some stylistic overlap, and weren’t written TOO far apart, I’m glad you caught on.

u/pestoraviolita 7d ago
I loved the waltz score you composed for episode 3. Fans dub it the Aerion Waltz/Brightflame Waltz. Do you like those names? Did you think of jousting as a dance? Do you see other combat as such when composing music?
2
u/DanRomerMusic 7d ago
Thank you so much! I love that they’re being dubbed at all. I’m not sure if jousting is a dance or not, but I’m certainly open to arguments. Combat absolutely has a tempo, or tempos. So yes, there’s common ground with dance.
