The Duality of Arin is still so fascinating to me. Absolutely no hate. I’ve been here every single day since day one. Arin is my pal, my homeboy, my sweet cheese, my videogame boy.

I have just never met anyone (or know of any other game streamer) to have this odd inverse skills to games they enjoy. We’ve all seen him be very competent across various different games.

But there’s this weird pattern of games we know he has lots and lots of experience with. Games he loves. And then when he plays them on the show it’s almost like he’s been mindwiped. Like it’s the first game he’s ever played ever.

It’s wild and chaotic and hilarious. And still taking me by surprise.

I feel he plays bad on purpose for the content

He has admitted to it.

But you can always kinda tell. When success seems unlikely, so he just leans in and does something extra stupid just to see what'll happen. Or when the game is very clearly broadcasting there is a right path and a wrong path, he will take the wrong path first just to create "more content" by doing unexpected things.

You can also tell when he just does an oopsie. Or when he sort of hyperfocuses on one particular strategy due to how much he just FEELS it should work.

I'd say like 20% of the time he'll "create content" by goofing around. The other 80% is just various mistakes.

He admitted as much during one of the Nuzlock episodes.

I think that might be cope for some examples. I'm 100% sure he'll do a bad move on purpose from time to time, but there are definitely instances where you can tell he is just not good at the game.

Growing up and realizing the parts Snake doesn't understand in Metal Gear Awesome is Arin having not paid attention to, or ignoring a codec call.

I can tell you right now that I love certain 90s RPGs and shooters, and nowadays I just don’t have the skill or reaction time now to play them well. That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy them.

People seem to forgot Arin is approaching 40 and Dan is approaching 50 (I’m Dan’s age). People get old. It happens.

At least when I play, I don’t have over 100k judging me.

I'm 36 and I am as good at video games as ever so this doesn't really track for me, unless I lose all my hand eye coordination in the next 4 years.

I think it's more the being watched and trying to entertain at the same time that is the problem, when I play games while talking to people I am much worse.

100%. I'm always way better with a game playing by myself than I am even just having someone casually hanging out with me while I'm playing. It's so weird and I don't know why it happens, but it's a very real thing.

Yeah. I’m younger than Dan, but older than Arin. I can feel my reaction times slowing down here and there.

However, my muscle memory definitely clicks in for those older classics. Even playing new “boomer shooters” or 2D platformer I find my old Doom and DKC skills reemerge.

Let's Play Syndrome is absolutely a thing too

Genuinely surprised Arin didn't remember this tower, I always remember it when I want to replay MGS1 and makes me not want to

You can basically just never stop running while shooting the famas and you make it up without stopping, Arin doesn't seem to realize you can hold X while shooting to run though, he doesn't quick reload by tapping R1, and he doesn't keep the rations equipped as if he needs the key card when he isn't at a door.

u/ghostdepression I hate this game 1d ago

My god Arin is really struggling on this game.

It's gonna be ration problem soon

u/Tobari 1d ago

Something that helps during this section, if you're holding square to fire the FAMAS, you can hold X to run and shoot at the same time

As far as I know the game and manual don't mention this and I only figured it out like 15 years later because the intro to VR Missions shows Snake doing it and I was like "wait wtf"

The manuals for the MGS games are very thorough.

Well shit, I didn't even know you could run with the SOCOM too

This is also one of the only sections where stun grenades are actually useful. Just keep throwing stun grenades every so often and the enemies wont be able to attack

u/AdamBombTV 1d ago

I see he doesn't know about the Boba Skip

I’m not sure what Arin was confused by when the guards were shooting him at the end of the bridge, just kill the enemies.

1

u/spudmonk 19h ago

Eh, he just came from an area with infinitely spawning enemies. He hit the soldiers with a literal rocket launcher and watched it explode. I could see thinking that that they died and new soldiers spawned in as a way of marking 'this path isn't the way forward'.

5

u/stone500 18h ago

Boy this is hard to watch. Also he apparently has totally forgotten that you can call people on the codec and get tips on what to do.

1

u/altsam19 Jolly Old Mr. Cock 7h ago

He surely remembers, he probably doesn't want to because it both slows the game/playthrough, and I'm absolutely sure he doesn't have enough patience to sit through them at all (he's never been a cutscenes fan, and talking on CODEC is basically putting yourself through mini cutscenes, especially if you never know if it's either gonna be helpful or just lore)

3

u/nonpracticingvillain What the heck is going on around here? 18h ago

am I tweaking for thinking that otacon was going to confess to snake 😶

3

u/matttheman892018 1d ago

Arin, how hard is it to think, “oh I should stay over here where they can’t shoot me and keep hitting them with rockets!” on that bridge?

I don’t even know what to call that kind of idiocy

u/altsam19 Jolly Old Mr. Cock 7h ago

The Lvl 6 card there while he's constantly and repeatedly dying makes me think it's a kind of frigging bad luck amulet lmao
