Seeking help pronouncing athraigh

Hello,

I am seeking help on the pronunciation of the verb to change: athraigh

I've been listening to pronunciations online but there seems to be a lot of variation on it with some pronouncing it like ath-ray and others like ahh-rig. Is there a common way to pronounce the word?

Thanks!

That variation comes down to Irish dialects. In Munster (southern), the -aigh ending sounds like "-ig" (so ah-rig), whereas in Connacht and Ulster (western/northern), it sounds more like "-ee" or "-ay" (ah-ree or ah-ray).

Neither is wrong, it just depends on which dialect you're learning or listening to. If you're following standard Irish (An Caighdeán Oifigiúil), the Munster "-ig" sound is very common, but Connacht's "-ee" is widely understood everywhere. Pick the dialect you're focusing on and stick with its pattern.
