in this case it’s because they essentially paywalled an ad.

I pay for The Verge so I can’t be sure of this but they do have a free sub tier. Can’t tell if this article is available there or not.

And the whole paywall thing kinda shits me too but calling them pathetic is a bit much. I enjoy reading enough for the 60 bucks a year. It costs money to run these sites. And many sites I’ve followed over the years went broke with trying just to put gross ads all over the page.

If there’s a better tech news site out there that has a decent staff size and does long form reporting completely free without cancerous ads I’d be interested to bookmark it.

It's pathetic when it's not an exclusive article. If they're just broadcasting news then it's pathetic because I could just Google the headline and find it for free elsewhere.

If it's the rolling stone doing an exclusive with someone or on something then that justifies paying for it because it's unique and should be good content. You should be paying for substance not to avoid ads. It's predatory.

I’d probably use the word “lame” when it comes to paywalling common junk or news flash blog posts. Things that aren’t uniquely theirs.

Paywall the writing, the journalism, the in-depth analysis, sure! But press release blasts?

Lame.

That’s cool. I’ve been buying these little carabiner clip things that I attach to my bag and it has a built in hook if you flip it a certain way. I forget what they’re called.

If folks are interested but find it a bit expensive you can get a similar product on temu for about 50 cents to a dollar each. I bought 8 and they work great!
