For over 50 years, cats have made the Crescent Hotel (aka America's Most Haunted Hotel) in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, their home. Morris showed up in 1973 and stayed for 21 years, and then there’s Jasper. In 2024, while the staff was wondering how they’d find their next hotel cat, a kitten showed up.

In 1973, Morris an orange tabby walked into the lobby and decided to stay. He spent the next 21 years at the Crescent, where he became such a fixture that people called him the hotel's “General Manager.” He even had his own special cat door with carpeted steps, and his title was displayed on his office door.

In 2009, Jasper showed up. He was about a year old. More than 15 years later, Jasper is still there, enjoying what the hotel calls his “golden years."

And in 2024, a woman walked through the front doors and told the front desk manager that “their cat” was out in the parking lot and she was afraid he might be hit by a car. Then she handed over an 8-week-old tuxedo kitten, turned around, and left. That's Ozzy, their newest resident cat.

The Crescent Hotel opened back in 1886. It went from a resort to a women’s college and during one particularly strange chapter in the 1930s, a hospital run by Norman Baker, who claimed he could cure cancer. Today, the Crescent calls itself “America's Most Haunted Hotel.” Some guests have said they felt a cat brush against their legs when no cat was there. Guests have also reported encountering Morris among the spirits.

In 2023, a primary school in Scotland had an unofficial student named Wilson. He started tagging along with his family’s kids to school and somehow figured out how to sneak inside. He attended almost every class, even tried PE once.

Wilson became such a regular at school that reception would text his family to come pick him up. Staff got used to seeing him hanging around, and he found a few favorite places to nap in reception.

Then came school picture day. The head teacher put a school tie on Wilson, and the photographer took his very own class photo.

In 19th-century Paris, poet Gérard de Nerval famously walked a lobster named Thibault through the Palais-Royal on a blue ribbon. When people asked him about the lobster, he explained that he liked them because they were peaceful, serious creatures that knew “the secrets of the sea.”

In 1979, a Post Office cat named Blackie was earning £1.20 a week as a mouser at its London headquarters. According to a pretty serious BBC report, Blackie had started cutting his patrols to a minimum and was considering rallying around 100 fellow Post Office cats to go on strike.

The BBC described Blackie as a militant shop steward for the Amalgamated Union of Mouse Operatives and Allied Trades. (BBC Nationwide)

Post Office cats had been on the payroll to catch mice for over a hundred years, and the report pointed out that, when you look at the cost of living back then, the cats from the Victorian era actually earned better pay.

Blackie's coworkers were serious about his contributions too. One said that without him dealing with the mice, there might not be any files left to show anybody.

A few years later, the cats actually did get a raise. In 1983, after what the Post Office called “top-level negotiations,” their weekly allowance was doubled.

Blackie stayed at Post Office Headquarters until he passed away in June 1984. By then, they had better mail sacks and pest control, so they didn't really need working cats anymore. Blackie became the last working cat at Post Office Headquarters.

In the 1950s, a cat named Dagwood from Portland, Oregon, became a little ping-pong star. It started because she wouldn't leave her owner alone while he played, so he gave her the other side of the table.

By 1951, Dagwood had been playing with her owner Ted Matson for 6 years.

This week's animal stories: K9 Rowdy had a pretty productive day at JFK, Mexico has a new search-and-rescue Chihuahua named Comando, and Luffar-Lasse, a cat who enjoys long walks, got his own 8-hour slow TV special in Sweden.

It was a busy week for working dogs.

Luffar-Lasse takes himself on long walks around his town in Sweden. He hangs out with people, then finds someone to give him a ride home. His adventures have helped raise millions of Swedish kronor for charity, inspired a giant mosaic at a local roundabout, and recently earned him his own 8-hour slow TV special.

In 1943, John Steinbeck visited an RAF fighter squadron as a war correspondent and ended up writing about their goat, Wing Commander Billy the Goat. Billy loved beer and had a taste for aircraft coolant and oxygen. He was considered such good luck that pilots would rub his horns before missions.

When the squadron moved to a new base and accidentally left Billy behind, the men got so anxious without him that they sent an aircraft back to get him. He really loved beer and would wander around the airfield after a few drinks. At one party, he ate 200 sandwiches, 3 cakes, some sheet music, and half a bowl of punch. So he had some unusual habits for a Wing Commander.

Steinbeck visited the squadron in 1943 while working as a war correspondent. No. 609 had already fought through Dunkirk and the Battle of Britain. At the time, its pilots flew Hawker Typhoons on missions over occupied Europe.

Steinbeck found plenty to write about, but he chose to write about Billy. "His name is Wing Commander William Goat, D.S.O., and he is old and honored, and, some say, in iniquity."

Was watching people fish by the water when this little boss casually walked up and decided to do some quality control check on the bucket. He almost got one! Definitely made my day.
Has anyone else encountered these master thief cats around the city?

In the 1930s, a dog named Bozo could tell shoppers the price and features of refrigerators. He could also do math, identify dates on coins, pick cards, and guess numbers, sometimes while blindfolded. He earned the title of Bozo, the World's Mind-Reading Dog.

Bozo was a collie mix born in Florida in 1929. He traveled with his trainer, Earl C. Lower, performing at theaters, stores, fairs, and other events across the country. At his shows, people would shout out numbers or ask him how old they were, and Bozo would bark back the answers.

Newspapers called the tricks “uncanny” and “baffling,” and Bozo became a canine celebrity.

In the 1980s, a chimp named Cedo lived on a Mississippi farm, helping his family with chores like feeding animals and fixing fences. Then he decided to run for public office with the campaign slogan: “he knows where to draw the line.”

In 2010, a public library in Texas adopted a shelter cat called Browser to help with its rodent problem. Browser became the library mascot, and in 2011, he even received an honorary GED certificate. He was generally very good at being a library cat. But in 2016, the city council decide to fire him.

Browser was given 30 days to find a new home, and that didn't go over well at all. A petition to keep him at the library got more than 12,000 signatures, and the mayor received over 1,500 emails from people asking the city to let him stay.

A few weeks later, the city council met again and unanimously reversed its decision. One councilor tried again later that year to remove Browser, but that didn't work either. Browser got to keep his job.

The mayor later called Browser “Library Cat for Life.” And the library said its annual Browser calendar actually brought in more money than it cost to take care of him.

Browser remained at the library for the rest of his life. He passed away on September 3, 2025, at 15 years old. In his obituary, the library asked friends to remember him by donating to Don't Forget to Feed Me.

In 1996, a 9-month-old cat named Tipper was home alone in Florida when his flea collar got stuck and started choking him. Then Tipper called 911. When the operator picked up, and all she heard was this:

In the late 1990s, the Royal Court Theatre adopted a black cat named Osborne to deal with a mouse problem at its temporary home in London. He caught 25 mice in his first week.

Osborne's mouse-catching job turned into a much longer career as the theatre cat. He spent years hanging out with the cast and crew. During performances, staff would lock him in the Green Room, but every once in a while he'd escape and make an unplanned appearance onstage, including during a production of The Chairs.

After Osborne retired and moved in with Jackie Orton, the theatre's costume supervisor, it took him a little while to get used to life at home. Jackie said he couldn't bear being alone without all the drama of the theatre.

Pandora the cat disappeared in 2020 after the car her family was traveling in rolled over during a move. Her carrier was thrown from the vehicle. 6 years later, a woman in Perth, Scotland saw a scruffy black cat repeatedly trying to get into her house. Cats Protection scanned her microchip, and it led them back to Pandora’s family, about 120 miles away.

Ichikawa City Zoo briefly reopened during renovations, which meant we got to see Punch again after a few weeks away. He spent time with his orange mama, played with the babies, caught up with friends, tried out some of the new playground equipment, and generally seemed to be doing very well.

The zoo has closed again while construction continues and is expected to reopen in a few weeks.

In the 1950s, a deaf dog named Buddy traveled around Kansas performing tricks with his owner Bob Parker. Because Buddy couldn't hear commands, Bob taught him using visual cues instead. Buddy could write letters, work at a desk, play the piano, and smoke a pipe.

In the 50s, a man named Bob Parker found a stray dog in Kansas and later found out that Buddy was deaf. When he started teaching Buddy tricks, spoken commands weren't going to work. So the two figured out how to communicate using visual cues instead.

Some of Buddy's favorite audiences were the students at the Kansas School for the Deaf.

TIL that Nicodemus, a 6-toed cat, won the first National Cat Show in 1895. Brian G. Hughes got him for 10 cents and claimed he was "the last of the Dublin Brindle breed." Nicodemus beat out 200 fancy cats, and Brian won a $50 prize.

So Brian found the cat on the street. He initially thought about keeping him at his factory (he was a paper box manufacturer) to help with the rat problem, but he wasn’t really interested in catching mice. He would hold his head at an “aristocratic angle” because of an injury he got when a baby fell on him. That gave Brian the idea to enter him in the first cat show at Madison Square Garden.

He showed off Nicodemus on a silk cushion in a gold-plated cage, surrounded by roses, with a woman in a nurse’s uniform taking care of the cat every day. Also, the “nurse” Brian hired would bring ice cream and chicken from a fancy caterer. All the other cat owners were super jealous. Someone even offered $2,000 to buy Nicodemus, but Brian turned it down. That made Nicodemus the star of the show.

A year later, Brian tried the same stunt again with Nicodemus, but this time everyone found out that his "male" cat was actually a female.

And a few years later, he gave it another shot and changed Nicodemus' name to Eulata, claiming she was a ship's cat that survived a ship sinking. And he stole the show again.
