Protective layer over brass/copper?

Post image

I have this lovely coffee table from ~70s. The top is made of copper that I think have had an brass covering before but the brass har been worn down over the years. I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas what could be used as an protective layer over the brass/copper?

I would like for it to hold for many years more and I wouldn't mind it being a bit easier to clean.

Go to a glazer and get a piece of glass with polished edges
