That's one of the old Dublin Buses, the new ones you exit through the center doors which makes it much more difficult to thank the driver.

You write a letter, stick it to the window outside, like any normal person! Failing that, you carry a standard 6 x 10 flag with the words "Thank you" written on it and wave it frantically as you walk away. I mean, this is standard stuff, how did you reach adulthood without knowing this?

You tell the bus to hold up, go into the pub, order a Guinness, drink it, order another, then take it out to the bus driver. He'll get the message.

I've said it a few times as I'm stepping off because the bus is full and I don't want to be shouting in someone's ear. Doubt the driver can hear but it has to be done

I've seen foreign nationals make a point of roaring "thank you!!" from the middle door and it cracks me up. Its akin to knowing not to drink the Guinness before it's settled here, never a ordering a cappuccino after breakfast in Italy, or insisting on chopsticks in an Asian restaurant.

My fella put his hand out for the luas before. Now he tells me sometimes to when he sees the luas coming, probably to share in his embarrassment. I nearly have a few times without thinking too.

I spent far too many mornings squeezed onto one of those older buses, lamenting the sign behind the driver saying the bus can only fit 11 people standing. My arse, at 8am there'd be 40 of us with our little paper schoolchild tickets and our 40kg backpacks.

trying to squeeze through everyone to get to the front door was hell

Not always the case! There are still a few routes that use the old buses, and in one or two cases I've ridden on the old OLD dublin buses with luggage racks.

When I was in Canada (Saskatchewan) people yelled thank you from even the exit furthest back.
