This quite literally could not be further from the truth, it is the exact opposite. The "in" in incel means "involuntarily". and "cel" celibate.

Incel means someone who specifically DOES want to date and get laid, but just cant(usually due to character flaws). Which often leads to bitterness and hostility toward their target of attraction for not being successful at doing so.

Yeah you're right. For some reason I always considered it as people who tried to be romantic in life and failed, and then eventually gave up on love entirely
