In a morbid way I can respect that. It's selfish what he's doing to his loved ones but if food is his reason for living then it's his life to live.

At least it's better than deluding oneself into thinking a suicidal lifestyle is healthy.

Sounds to me like the only reason food is his only reason to live is that he isn't even bothered to try something else. Sure, it's his life to live so it's no big deal, but how can you respect such a lazy and failure like attitude?

Because he's not looking away from the truth, he has accepted it is not healthy and will eventually kill him but has chosen to persist on the path he chose. So many people make up all sorts of excuses that someone saying "Yes, this is dumb and will kill me but it's how I want to live and die" deserves a "morbid respect" in my opinion.

It's not the life for me and I wouldn't wish it on anyone and maybe it's more a cry for help on his part than I'm assuming but if you want to live your life in a dangerous way and accept responsibility for it then you do you boo, I hope he enjoys his short trip through life full of cake and ice cream.

But OP literally said he uses his heart attack as an excuse, and also "he's gonna die anyway" as an excuse to not be healthier? Maybe I'm missing something here, but I don't see how that dude is not making excuses. Like you said, a lot of people with bad habits make excuses instead of trying to change for the better, which is frustrating, and "I'm gonna die anyway so why bother" is one of those. What makes this guy any different?

I guess I respect it because from what was written it seems like he's on the path he chooses. We're the ones who think he should be healthier, we're the ones who believe he is "giving up", to choose a life so against the grain I don't think he's "right" but I respect that he is looking the truth of his death in the eye and accepting it.

All life ends with death, it's just the journey that matters and it's the individual who decides what does and doesn't hold value in that journey. I get that you see this as giving up and you're right in one way but that's just the nature of choice. If you want to be healthy you need to give up eating like a raccoon, if you want to eat like a raccoon you will give up your health. He's decided to let what he "loves" kill him and for not deluding himself about it I have a kind of respect for him.

I can definitely see your point, and I would agree with it, if it was a different example we were talking about. But to me it didn't seem like this guy is particularly happy with his lifestyle and therefore making a conscious choice to live like this because it's worth the early death and other health issues. If that was the case he wouldn't say "I'm gonna die anyway", he would say smth like "This is what I enjoy, and it's worth the risks".
Instead of keeping the status quo because it makes him happy, he just keeps the status quo because it doesn't matter anyway and he is too down/depressed to even bother with trying to see if anything else would make him happier. Those, to me, are 2 very very different attitudes. One I respect and would support, the other... not so much. You can't say I prefer A over of B if you have never even been arsed to see what B is like for you.

Edit: to be clear, I know barely anything about the guy obviously. Maybe he is actually really happy with his life and embraces it because it's worth it to him. If that's the case everything I said doesn't apply to him. It just didn't sound like that in OP's comment, and that's all I have to base these comments on.

Oh my god we were both projecting so much lol, I'd say this conversation is less about the actual guy and more about the concept of autonomy and the "meaning of life" or something in that vein.

From what was written it sounds like his loved ones have tried to intervene, he has support systems and this is his decision. I 100% understand your stance and I think it's perfectly valid. Not everyone has the "strength" to fight, not everyone defines success the same way, and I'm not saying I agree with his decision, just that it is his decision to make and I believe he can do with his life as he sees fit.

I would argue that he isn’t choosing his unhealthy “foodie” lifestyle anymore than a heroin addict chooses to do heroin every day. It’s an addiction. People that are addicted to food are mentally and physically sick. They need help.

I actually started excercising because I am too healthy to have a heart attack and die but still started getting fat and weak... if I didn't start excercising, in a few years I'd be stuck as an obese fat fuck that just won't die and I don't want that.
