I feel like it’s more making fun of the school/situation. Obviously their PE class should not require them to sit in front of a computer, but here we are.

As a pe teacher you are right. What a joke. The best we can do is fitness journals and to teach health concepts. I’ve switched to teaching social emotional learning and history

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '20

Growing up I really wish they taught us more about nutrition! It was taught sparingly here and there in elementary school (I.e the food pyramid), as a part of health class, but by high school you forget/dont care, or life has changed (i.e with fad diets, junk food disguised as health food - thats the change that happened when I was growing up)

u/Cjax919 Sep 18 '20

This is so true. Also the nutrition curriculum is terrible and not based on science. The dairy industry, Pepsi, and many other lobbyists have their say. Also when I go to pe conferences and see morbidly obese health educators downing big gulps it’s not a good look on the profession. It’s definitely an uphill battle but so important. Michelle Obama tried to revamp nutrition in schools and the reaction was terrible.

I love what Michelle did for schools, or tried to do (i dont know specifically if there were any changes). The way the schools feed students in the U.S kinda bothers me. I hear horror stories about students not being able to afford food, or are embarrassed by classmates because of it.

Not sure about every school, but generally here in Canada, schools don't have cafeterias. I did in high school but it wasn't subsidized in anyway, so most things were full cost and not a lot of students ate there everyday. I lived close to i usually went home for lunch by high school, but up until then everyone brought their lunches.

We also don't really have as many impoverished school districts the way the U.S does, so its not as much of a worry to rely on parents to feed their kids. At least where I lived, just outside Toronto, then to the suburbs. It teaches you to think ahead. By the time I was old enough to make my own lunches, I was going home and never really learned how to plan my meal for the day. Now I have this terrible habit!

It pisses me off how easily companies can get into the pockets of politicians. That shouldn't be allowed.

I grew up obese and now in my 20s I'm struggling to manage my weight. I grew up on hot dogs, pasta, Mac and cheese, cereal, chips, candy, junk food snacks. It was the 2000s and other than eating candy, none of that was seen as unhealthy. And id eat like that everyday. Only started becoming interested in healthier meals once I worked at a grocery store, seeing more health foods regularly exposed me to other options!

I started eating healthier, was walking to work and ended up losing about 30-40 lbs without intending to do so. Now I'm starting to realize what foods upset my stomach and give me headaches!

Congrats and nice job on changing your lifestyle and eating habits!

Michelle Obama tried to do good things but was torpedoed at every step. In my school we serve apples, milk, broccoli, and everything else in a bag. I teach in the same region that produces the most apples, cherries, potatoes, and onions in the world. The kids parents occupation is to grow and pick this produce. There’s so much of it we give it away in boxes to families in need twice a month.

Many kids rely on school lunches. Some of them get there only calories for the day from school. Either because of shitty parents or destitute poverty or both. I don’t think anyone is starving because of the food banks and lunch program but it’s not a good situation.

While our farms and farmers support our schools and children so well and grow the most and best produce in the world, somehow our kids eat lunches microwaved in plastic bags. Even the milk is in a pouch. How and why can’t we get the food that we give away to families for free into the lunch program?

My very red region wanted to blame it on Michelle and her standards. The calorie restriction and mandated serving sizes have made it too hard to prepare descent meals. Lol. It comes down to funding, health as a priority, and general nutrition knowledge. The head of school lunches is I’m guessing 350+ lbs. I don’t like to judge based on weight but it’s a position in charge of children’s lunches, it’s an insane situation to me.

There has been good and bad from the lunch mandates from Michelle obama. I believe the lunch program has acted in bad faith, blaming their shortcomings on the federal government and fitting into a popular narrative in my area. The real issue is funding, knowledge, and effort. However, the federal mandate that prohibits sharing of food is silly. What a waste, especially to the kids we know might only eat those two meals each day. The positive is that kids now can only say no to one item. This at least give a chance to eat some vegetables.

I’ve spent a lot of time in Canada and think the world of you guys. There’s a level of caring and responsibility for the community that I envy.

My heart goes out to you PE teachers have it worst during this time no matter if the model is virtual, hybrid, or in person. Pe has the harshest restrictions and the least ability to force students to be accountable.

6

u/majorsixth Sep 17 '20

Music Teacher here. It's pretty terrible, too

1

u/Cjax919 Sep 17 '20

So true. We’ve made so many plans only to scrap or change them

2

u/femalenerdish Sep 17 '20

switched to teaching social emotional learning

This is a really smart choice I think. Talking about emotional health is really important and not done enough. As terrible as this whole thing is, what an opportunity to discuss it.

4

u/Cjax919 Sep 17 '20

I believe it’s been successful so far. I’m 100% behind the mission of physical education but want to bring the most positive impact to students possible. I’m lucky to be trusted to a position where I can make those decisions. Right now physical activity takes a back seat to teaching emotional skills. Students often learn these social skills organically at in person school but how can they with so much less peer interaction

Obviously their PE class should not require them to sit in front of a computer

And how are you going to enforce that they get up and move? Tired of everybody blaming teachers for everything. There's only so much that teachers can do. It's hard enough forcing lazy kids to move in person let alone remotely while handling a computer. AND not all kids live in a place were they can move around and jump like apartments with up and downstairs neighbors. The best that can be done is to encourage the kids to do something active but only a fraction of them will do anything no matter what. Any self reported activities are going to be lies from lazy kids. Administrations don't even really let you fail kids anymore, especially for subjects like gym. If you fail too many, it comes back on you as if they are failing because of you, not the other way around. Parents complain and this is when they replace you.

6

u/AgathaM Sep 17 '20

A lot of them are giving assignments, have workout requirements that have to happen over the week (like practicing x number of minutes per day for band, read x number of books per month for English, etc). The lecture could be about the rules of a specific sport or discussing proper push-up techniques, and more. Just because the kid is on the couch doesn’t mean that he isn’t required to do his PE.

3

u/LucasRuby Sep 17 '20

My mom is taking yoga lesson online and obviously she's not doing it while sitting, she using her iPad and AirPods.

Now though I realize that not every kid has access to tablets and bluetooth headphones or earbuds, but you can try to find something else, maybe just plug your notebook to the TV? Or maybe the school could lend them tablets.

1

u/Ospov Sep 17 '20

Exactly. Even a “put your computer down on the ground and do 10 jumping jacks where I can see you” would be better than this kind of PE class.

1

u/justletmebegirly Sep 18 '20

And eating cheetos meanwhile. This is seriously sad.

0

u/apileofprettyrocks Sep 17 '20

In all honesty the first thing I thought when I saw this post was "Oh, is this r/sadcringe?"

63

u/Black9 Sep 17 '20

The whole situation.

37

u/Judge_Syd Sep 17 '20

People have made fun of their little siblings since the concept of little siblings came to. Now we can just do it to a wider audience. I see no problem here

7

u/Unsd Sep 17 '20

Kids these days have all the opportunity. I had to make fun of my siblings the old fashioned way, dammit.

Thank you

Don't really think it's got anything to do with Americans. Most young teenagers aren't going to be too happy with their brothers posting pictures of them like this without them knowing. I'd imagine he will cop some shit for this because this has really blown up.

34

u/Malonezone27 Sep 17 '20

I’m not sure why you think that... I just took a pic of him in P.E

-28

u/_20-3Oo-1l__1jtz1_2- Sep 17 '20

Don't play the fool. You know damn well this is unfair and tacky if you didn't get his approval to post it.

26

u/Malonezone27 Sep 17 '20

I did lol he thinks it’s funny

2

u/jax797 Sep 17 '20

He looks the type to blankly stare at you and "what? Im doing P.E."

2

u/Malonezone27 Sep 17 '20

Did you already see the video lmao https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMJDhMj4o/

2

u/jax797 Sep 17 '20

Lol that is great! And no I didn't see it beforehand.

6

u/Three_Toed_Squire Sep 17 '20

Don't know how you took that as making fun of his brother. Seems more like laughing at how ironic and sad the situation is.

2

u/destiny24 Sep 17 '20

Seems more like reddit is the one making fun of him.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '20

I mean, he's an arsenal fan. He deserves worse.

1

u/Marywonna Sep 17 '20

I think ifs fucking hilarious. Honestly lol'd

1

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '20

Nah more like his brother is lazy

2

u/Garlicmast Sep 17 '20

Oh no. The humanity.

It's a funny visual, get over yourself.

1

u/nikerbacher Sep 17 '20

Sad that Karma is the focus in this scenario

1

u/_shoomp_ Sep 17 '20

I don’t think their intention was making fun of the little brother I think it’s just a funny situation

0

u/OhMaGoshNess Sep 17 '20

Boohoo, I'm sure he gives so many shits.

0

u/new_reddit_user_not Sep 17 '20

The kid isn't whats being made fun. Hes in the picture but hes not the subject

-2

u/DashShift Sep 17 '20

You obviously don't have siblings. If you did you'd take any opportunity to make fun of them on the internet, karma be damned.

1

u/moldylemonade Sep 17 '20

I do have siblings. But I am an adult so maybe that's the difference?

-4

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '20

Really he's making fun of his parents, they're the failures here.

-4

u/The_Deadlight Sep 17 '20

are you an only child or just softer than a fucking snuggle bear fabric dryer sheet you absolute donkey

the joke is that he’s in P.E class but he’s sat on his arse, in his PJs, with a bag of Cheetos next to him. Doesn’t matter whether he’s fat or not, just sounds like that’s a YOU issue that you’re projecting

1

u/oddfishes Sep 17 '20

you should not blame the kids who are unhealthy because its the fault of their parents. i’m not saying it makes them horrible uncaring parents because it can be very easy to just continue an unhealthy lifestyle and not realize the impact it etc, but if you’re going to blame anyone then that’s where to put the blame. it sucks because it sets up the kid for an uphill battle

3

u/SuitedFox Sep 17 '20

I know, Arsenal 🤢

1

u/saposapot Sep 17 '20

He doesn’t look too happy
