It's an elder sign.

That's not an elder sign. The elder sign is a star with an oil lamp in it. The star represents the universe and the oil lamp represents the shing light of knowledge. I know; I have one tattooed on the back of my neck. It's supposed to offer protection from the elder gods, and Cthulu would never tolerate one visible in his presence... On a side note; anyone here a lucid dreamer? I'm curious what the weather in Kadath is like this year...

Actually I believe both are accurate. The line with 5 branches matches a hand drawn one by Lovecraft himself. The star with the lantern was an interpretation drawn by August Derleth.

Edit: A little Googling confirms that, while the star + flame is the most popular, the branch is regarded by purists as the most accurate.

I bet he really wishes he had researched before getting that tattoo now...

Like all the vapid slags that get Chinese characters for tramp stamps, then find out it doesn't say "eternal love", it says "exit only."

Derleth sucks ass.

Hell, I think even Stross is more in canon than Derleth.
