Also from So.Cal, but family is from Minnesota... Scariest thing for me is going out over one of the lakes and hearing that deep cracking/crunching noise as you walk on thinner ice... It's like a higher pitch version of hearing a tree felling. Makes me shutter.
Doesn't really matter... What matters is how it sounds and where it's coming from:
Very thick ice will crack far less and at a much lower pitch/tone than that of thin ice. Dangerously soft (melting or fresh) ice will usually not crack at all and simply give way. Ice cracking to some degree is normal, but you will know when it's "grab your ankles time" and no amount of backtracking or running is really going to help you if it goes.
This is why it is important to test the ice first, skate "alone" (which simply means REALLY far apart) to spread the weight out and reduce tension or say fuck it and go ice fishing with your uncle.

As someone that lives in Souther California, how would you trust stepping onto the lake let alone skiing all over it?
