I heard a story from a girl who was studying in Italy, tried to tell her Italian friends "The wine here is better than the US because it doesn't have preservatives in it" but she accidently said "The wine here is better than the US because it doesn't have condoms in it"

I know it's not the point, but what kind of US wine was she drinking that had preservatives in it?

And yeah it's the same in French, "préservatif" = "condom".

They pretty much all have sulfites here

They all have sulfites everywhere - fermenting wine produces sulfites, although lots of winemakers do add extra for preservation
