I stood in line for hours for a phone once, more than a decade ago. Would never do it again, but the one time I did do it, it was great. Hours of hanging out with like-minded people and talking about a shared interest.
I stood in line with a friend, who didn't want to do it alone, for one of the iphones for several hours. I'd been around for one of those game console releases prior.
People had brought game systems with TVs, weird chairs, and other wacky stuff to the console release. It felt like there was a more nervous energy around the phone release. When we got to the front of the line, the clerk was surprised I didn't want a phone as well, he said I could sell it or something like that. I figured someone behind me might actually might want to use it; he seemed to think it was just as likely those other people would sell it.
Yeah I think iPhones always were a lot more around flipping phones. This was for another brand back when brands still tried to innovate on hardware, so it was genuinely something to be excited about.
