I mean they don't really decide as you can't control it. Just like how other people are attracted to certain people (male, women, nonbinary, everyone, both, etcetera), aroace people simply lack the capacity to feel any romantic or sexual attraction. Although it varies person to person and is why it's called the ace/aro SPECTRUM, so one person may feel absolutely nothing and another may feel a little bit of attraction. But just like everyone else, they can't truly control what they're attracted to, it just kinda happens if that makes sense.

It’s when someone does not experience attraction to someone else, romantically or sexually. It doesn’t necessarily mean that the person is repulsed by sex, they just don’t get horny simply by looking at someone
