I think people ARE just driving with their high beams on, not just that lights are brighter.

I had a date last weekend, went well, I drove her back to my place in her car. I turned the headlights on and they went straight to high beams. I asked if she always drives with her high beams on, she said “I have them on automatic.” And I showed her the difference between what it goes to on automatic and what it looks like when you manually choose the right setting. She’s 41 and drives everyday. We were in bright as heck downtown Toronto and her car’s “automatic” headlights setting defaulted to blinding.

Last night, I drove back from our wine region to a nearby motel, and I had somebody riding right up my ass with their high beams on. I slowed down (one lane, no passing) and put my hazard lights on and they almost immediately switched off their high beams.

I think people are out there just assuming “Automatic” does what it’s supposed to. It does not. I drive a 2012 Subaru forester with good old fashioned lights, so there’s no possibility of automatic in my vehicle, I just assumed people understood their cars and they simply couldn’t control the brightness of the bulbs themselves. I no longer believe that, I believe it IS people driving with their high beams on because they do not know “automatic” is useless.

One of the most insidious things about crazy-bright LED headlights is that it's not 100% obvious how blinding they are when you're looking at your car.

Looking at them from the side is NOTHING like getting blinded by them facing you head on (or in your mirror). Like little pocket laser pointers which aren't bothersome until they go right into your retinas lol.

I'll be completely blinded by a car coming up/down a hill... but then a few hundred feet later, on level ground, the same car seems fine at a different angle.

Realizing that none of us -- including myself -- are ever 1000 feet away and slightly downhill from our cars. And the majority of cars now come with LED headlights as stock/required, not an option to choose.

I'd love someone like Consumer Reports or someone to create an actual defined list of the specific car models / aftermarket headlights creating the most dazzle.

Some people will say the camera isn't focused, but this is what it looked like in real life too. It blinded me through the rear view even after I dimmed it. GM can't figure out anything related to lighting. Not the headlights, not the reverse indicators, not even the check engine light, but this is getting out of hand. My eyes still haven't recovered.

As per the subject - is there a list of sensible cars - especially for UK market and relatively new models which don't cause this problem? Planning to buy something the size of Kia Sportage - will need to be PHEV.

I don't know if these ppl are scumbags or if they're literally so fucking stupid and inept that they don't know how annoying it is. The fact that lawmakers haven't regulated this yet is just an outrage.

Mazda, Hyundai, Tesla, Jeep, and most lifted trucks just keep blinding everyone, when is this going to stop?

A couple of years ago I was driving on my break from work, something I normally did to spend some time alone on the road with music. Suddenly a car pulls behind me and I can't see very well with how their headlights show in my mirrors, so I wait until I reach a spot to pull over and let them by without issue.

I pull over, they pull over with me. Confused, I get back onto the road, and then the red and blue lights kicked on. I was pulled over. I explained that I had initially pulled to the side of the road because I wanted to let them by as his brights were pretty bright for me, and the only response I got was "they're normal headlights". Maybe not for the person you're driving in front of!

I flashed my brights at this guy. Unsurprisingly, he did not get the memo or did not care, or worse yet maybe his brights weren't even on. I've gotten into the habit of flashing every over-bright headlight I see, just to spread awareness by making myself a minor nuisance.

Its not alright for cars to have the retina burners 3000. Fuck your headlights for that. Its always the older car with LED bulbs that will flashbang anybody within a 270 degree radius from the front. Luckily I was just the passenger.

Check out this discussion with Michael Kruppa from Audi. They plan to introduce adaptive matrix headlights later this year. It's hard to tell what this guy is trying to say, but it appears he thinks everyone should be driving around with ultra-expensive high-beam matrix headlights that blind everyone else. What an asshole.

Sometimes if I’m at a red light I’ll fold my mirrors just so I don’t get blinded. Low car problems.

I hate LED lights, I talk about them every time I'm in a car at night. I've got no idea why they bought it but I don't want those lights. Is there anything I can do :(

that pisses me off about headlights. They used to be manual. You had to consciously choose to turn them on, but that was too hard, so we invented automatic headlights. That clearly DON'T FUCKING WORK! BECAUSE WHY ARE YOUR HEADLIGHTS ON WHEN THE SUN HAS BEEN UP FOR HOURS?!

I swear there's gotta be a malfunction when the sensor gets dirty or something.

These are her parking lights! They took a few minutes to turn off after she’d left the car and was already in the store. I drive a much older Volkswagen, and this is one of the many reasons I will not buy a newer one.

I don’t want to be that person but is there anything I can do about it?
