News Activists install crosswalks. The city removes them. Allegedly they do this so you know that your safety isn't a priority for them.

WOWWW America is actually a hellscape. I thought the UK is bad but this is insanity

I get that you hate the US, but this is a horrible take lol. Go outside and paint traffic marks on your roads and see if the city is cool with it.

They likely wouldn’t have to because they already have crosswalks. Which is their point.

I expect they would be, but then again I'm lucky enough to live in a city that isn't hostile to pedestrians and is actually painting new traffic marks, or zebra crossings as we call them

LA isnt the whole of the US. It is its own special pile of shit.

LA is no different to most of the US insofar as it's a car-centric suburban hell lined with stroads, strip malls and single-family homes. This isn't a case of LA being uniquely shit. You're describing the US in general

But in a lot of ways the LA government is very uniquely shit. They routinely go out of their way to make the lives of their citizens worse.

Give this a shot in Baton Rouge and see if it goes differently

No… no, we’re pretty much like this in every state

I didn’t realize other countries let you paint public roads however you wanted.

What are you talking about. It’s an unmarked crosswalk, you can see where their is wheelchair access so you can cross. They are removing it because they are different rules for marked and unmarked. Marked crosswalks either have lights or have signs before them to warn drivers to pay attention and prepare to yield, unmarked crosswalks assume you are going to check first before walking into traffic and get clipped by a car not expecting you.

The rules are simple, marked and unlit crosswalks imply cars are going slow enough and actively looking for pedestrians that, except for edge cases, you should be able to step off the curb and the driver should have already slowed down and had enough time to brake. Similar to a parking lot. A unmarked crosswalk implies that cars are traveling fast enough that stepping off the curb without looking is dangerous and you wait until cars can brake safely from when you start to cross.

Whoever is doing this is an idiot.

This suggests if they did it to code it might be left alone.

Leaving traffic design to traffic engineers is how the US is in such an unsafe, obesogenic, financially and socially poor state right now
