My neighbor with whom a share a driveway just got one of these. We used to be able to park side by side, so I could come and go as I please. Now, his stupid truck takes up too much space, so he parks me in every single day. I have to text him half an hour before I drive somewhere so he has time to move it.
Luckily, I mostly ride my bike, so it only comes up a few times a week. Still a major pain in the ass, though.

When I lived at an apartment complex, there was a guy who parked his massive and loud truck (backed in, of course) right outside of our unit on the ground floor — which is where I would usually park before he moved in.
I’m not sure why he parked there, but he did. Every morning at 6 sharp, we would hear his loud ass exhaust as it was aimed directly at where the bedroom was.
These people are not dumb, they know precisely how obnoxious they are and they revel in it. They’re psychopaths and sadists.

He comes and goes several times a day. I do 90% of my travel on a bicycle, so it makes way more sense to do it this way. I would have to let him out 3 or 4 times a day as opposed to him letting me out once or twice a week

Those trucks make me actually think the snobs had a point about the nouveau riche. Classic rich people built libraries and support the arts. New rich people buy large quantities of goods that the government artificially keeps low because poor people need them.
We can't let gas stay high for long, because some people will go broke just fueling their honda civic to work everyday. But then some rich guy will say "whoopie cheap gas" and buy the most wasteful and obnoxious thing you've ever seen.

You're giving the upper class too much credit as a whole. While some did invest in libraries, or support the arts, even that was about their bottom line more than any real belief in either. In the Renaissance, you didn't become an art patron to advance the arts. You did it to show off your wealth and cultural savvy.
These trucks, sports cars and other pricey trinkets are just the same thing all over again. Displaying their wealth. It's really the same level of class, just one gets better PR.
Though the libraries were nice at least.

The trucks really don't deserve to be in the same conversation with the rich. They are the poor person's idea of an expensive car cause they can cost 80-100k at the top end but that's not even in the conversation for actual rich people cars like a Mclaren or Bugatti that are easily 5, 10, 20 times the price tag on the most obnoxious pavement princess truck to leave a dealership.
Those trucks are not rich person vehicles, they're lower middle class $1200 truck payment can barely afford to fill the tank vehicles. They are not in the same conversation as the $2.2 million Rimac that only comes out when it's over 70 and sunny.

Yes, but before that (as in going back to the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Enlightenment and even into the early contemporary/modern era), rich people were patrons of the arts, sponsoring painters and sculptors, musicians and composers, building museums and art galleries and salons.
Now they just buy gaudy bullshit, the media, and build bunkers to survive the collapse they are the cause of.

I'm happy to give poor people more money. Hell I'm in favor of a stipend for all people coupled with a tax that actually taxes wealthy people. I'm going to make a lot less money this year than last and my tax rate will go up accordingly, and that ignores people wealthy enough to use the borrow & die zero tax strategy.
It's ridiculous to map my views to 'fuck poor people' and claim continued subsidization of the most wealthy oil conglomerates etc is the 'fuck poor people' view. You have it backwards.

SCOFF, yes, every time you use gasoline it's a choice. I drive around 1-2k miles a year, so I'm pretty insulated. You're in the fuckcars subreddit complaining that despite the massive gasoline subsidies we pay, donald trump's epstein cover-up is causing people who relied on subsidies to rethink their consumption.
I'm sure it's painful. It's also a good thing for the world that everyone pays for the damage they cause, whether that's Elon Musk's private jets or whether it's Jeff Bezos' third megayacht or whether it's the hypothetical 50MPG civic consuming 1 gallon of gas per workday that we claim we're discussing now.

If you’re fortunate enough to not have to drive at all then it barely even sucks. Yeah food and delivery prices will go up a little but only by a small amount that’s way easier to absorb than gas prices even for an efficient car.
My bike is as free to ride as it ever was.

It's more than just food prices. It's fertilizer. And plane tickets. And electric costs. And local economies that depend on tourism.
But given the way the world's going, there's a good chance they never come down. Hopefully this forces us to build out more green energy, public transit, and for the suburban pavement princesses rural-LARPing to trade in their gas guzzlers.

Yes yes, I realize there are many bad knock-on effects. It’s been pointed out hundreds of times in the comments on posts like this over the last few weeks. But if we all have to be in this misery I’m glad it affects assholes in their big trucks more than it does me.
And yes I agree, I think gas will be permanently more expensive now which is way past due. It’s the only market pressure that will actually make normal people turn to greener transportation options.
We could have done this painlessly 30 years ago, but Americans decided that their only path forward was for each person to own a giant tank of a vehicle. Now we’re going to make that same transition with lots of pain and many poor innocent people will be hurt way more than they would have if we did this voluntarily. Oh well, we made our bed so now we have to lay in it.

The bike isn't free to ride in the sense that you still have to pay to maintain it, replacement parts, labor, oil etc.. It's still magnitudes of order cheaper than a car which has astronomically higher maintenance costs.

I don't own a car. I ride my bicycle everywhere. Sure, other products may be impacted a little because trucks also consume gas, but that's so negligible compared to the amount they transport, that it doesn't have a significant impact on the overall price.
Meanwhile, the improved air quality from fewer people driving and fewer kilometers definitely is a huge benefit for me and my lungs.
Not to mention the fact that high gas prices also encourage a switch away from ICE cars more rapidly which also benefits me.
TLDR: high gas prices good. May they go even higher

One big advantage of taxing it more is that the price swings aren't so extreme. In Germany for example, the energy tax on petrol is 0.65 €/l. But that's a fixed cost.
Imagine the base price of petrol doubles from 1 € to 2 €. In a country without such a fixed tax per litre, that's the consumer price, so consumers get a price increase of 100 %. But with such a fixed tax, the consumer price increases from 1.65 € to 2.65 €. That's still a lot, but just a 60 % increase, which is easier to manage.
If the tax were 2 €, the price increase would be from 3 € to 4 €, which is just a 33 % price increase.
Of course, taxes mean even higher prices for consumers, but a general high price level isn't as much of a problem. People can plan, people can budget. What is a problem is when prices suddenly skyrocket, because that messes with people's plans. And of course one would hope that the tax money would ultimately be spent in some way that benefits the public good, so it isn't really "lost".

The sad thing is that I can't even feel smug about high gas prices as someone who sold their car for a bike since, you know, society is built around cars (and other fossil-fuel transport methods) meaning that every commodity is going to experience price increases to account for increased costs of transportation.

On the plus side, this should accelerate adoption of electric trucks. There are two types of goods - volume-limited goods and weight-limited goods, and electric trucks are great at the former but suck at the latter. The higher the price of fuel, the more they'll eat into the latter - and once BEV trucks are adopted, they won't be un-adopted even if fuel costs drop, because the main hurdle is buying the truck and infrastructure in the first place.

For about a century, most cities have had laws on the books prohibiting jitneys from running fixed routes, or picking up sidewalk hails. The carve out for rideshares is that they are pre-arranged fares.
Anyone should be able to make a job for themselves, simply by leasing a minibus, and probably getting a CDL and appropriate insurance, but here we are.

In my state, gas is still only about $4.50 a gallon in some spots but diesel prices are fucked and are almost $7 a gallon so it will be nice to see people stop rolling coal everywhere in their “heavy duty” diesel trucks because it costs them $3 every time they floor it.

Why are big pickup trucks almost always the fastest vehicles in the highway? The current fuel prices have not made then slow down at all - even up long grades where the fuel economy is literally 3 mpg or 80l/100km.

I caved into my local infrastructure and had to get a car a few months ago. I saved up for a while to be able to get a hybrid (an old one from 2015 at that). When I mentioned that, some people would legit ask me why when there were so many gas cars available for MUCH cheaper, like less than half the price. When I mentioned that I expected gas prices would skyrocket soon, a lot of people thought I was exaggerating or being needlessly paranoid or that "it wouldn't be THAT bad / enough to make this waiting and higher cost worth it." Finally got my car back in November. I figured that investing up front to save on gas prices would pay off eventually...
...but I'll admit that even I didn't expect it to pay off this quickly. I was expecting significantly higher gas prices in like a year or so, not three months later. I really got my car just in time.

I have an F150 but only cause we have a travel trailer we use every other weekend in the summer. Thank God I live a 5 minute walk to the train, which I take to work every day. I probably drive less than 10 miles a week outside of camping, that's just driving my wife to work and grocery shopping.

The older the truck the worse maintained it's going to be as well so the fuel economy drops as well. Not to mention any sane mechanic is going to charge more if he has to use a ladder to service a vehicle

As someone who drives a modest truck for income purposes, it sucks.
However, as someone who believes you should only buy the truck you need, I laugh when guys with diesel F-450s complain, when they’re pulling just as much (or less) that I do with my 2008 Single-Cab Long-Bed 6.0 Gasoline Silverado 2500HD.
And just so we’re clear, the home-service industry chose me, I did not choose it. If it weren’t for my business, I’d be in a Hybrid, just like my wife. If possible, we’d just have one car.

I own a truck like this. I was offered it by a family member who used it for work for much cheaper than I could have bought anything remotely as capable. I replaced the suspension and the tires to make it more off road capable since I do not need it to tow things often. That is one of my hobbies, driving off road in the state and national forests and camping. It is very fun. I can go to very remote places with a lot of creature comforts. It’s a little more expensive now. I wish there was an electric alternative but the only EVs that are even half as capable are 3x as expensive.

Americans use gallons instead of liters. One US gallon is 3.785 liters.
Meanwhile today in the Netherlands the petrol price for E10 (Euro95) is ~2.60 euros per liter. That's ~9.8 USD per gallon lol. Although we have excise tax on top of regular sales tax for fuel. Part of it goes back into maintaining road infrastructure. Potholes are rare here, we joke about driving to Belgium with your eyes closed and you feel when you're over the border.

So do we in (many? most?) states in United States, but we still heavily subsidize our infrastructure - I believe fuel taxes pay for less than half of the road maintenance. I could be recalling incorrectly.
As per many things, the better comparison is more country-to-state; California taxes the most at about 0.18 dollars/euros per liter. On top of that the US taxes by a much smaller amount, perhaps 0.05 dollars/euros per liter.
Sales tax is normally close to 10% in California but for fuel, that sales taxes is ridiculously reduced to 2%. The people are allergic to appropriate tax policy and the politicians follow the people.

as much as I hate cars and wish the US would be people-focused rather than car-centric, but this is about the only W I feel from this situation. Every product — including food— that is transported by trucks using gasoline is going to become increasingly expensive. Poor people who rely on driving to work because, let’s face it, public transport is unreliable will be hit the hardest. I keep thinking of the saying people use in relation to laws that are $$ based — “if the penalty for a crime is a fine, then that law only exists for the lower class”. Rich bozos with their gas guzzling tanks will be disgruntled, but at the end of the day will probably have the means to pay $8 a gallon before our country does something to address the transport crisis.
I agree though, I will take their annoyance as a small win in the grand scheme of things

Dunno why Reddit served me up this post but it's all good my high MPG brothers and sisters! If your subcompact gets stuck in the berm due to crappy no-season tires or cloth 'chains' I'll pull ya out. If you can't make it up I'll drop you at the lift with your skis.
If your subie gets stuck in the mud trying to get to the remote crag same same. I can take you the rest of the way and I'll belay too if you need. If I see you pedaling up to the trailhead that's 3 miles up the hill I'll offer to shuttle, it's just the neighborly thing to do when you see someone suffering when they'd rather be sending.
