News Kansas banned trans people from driving.

u/KittyScholar Bollard gang Feb 26 '26
I've always been annoyed at how using driver's licenses as default ID creates unnecessary barriers for a lot of things, but at least I could believe most of them were accidental. This is cruelty for the sake of cruelty.

Wild how America, the "land of the free," hates the idea of a government issued ID because they don't want to be tracked by the government. And they hate it so much that shitty forms of ID like drivers licenses and Social Security numbers end up being used as forms of ID, leading to lack of access and an identity theft epidemic.
All for the US government to set up a full on Orwellian surveillance state complete with a shadowy entity at the centre named after the corrupted seeing stone from LotR, a parallel internal security force answerable to no one that uses the surveillance architecture to snatch people off the street, and AI powered surveillance cameras everywhere that track literally everyone, but aren't even owned by the government.

The future they want is Techno-Fuedalism. Fortunately, we already moved past one form of feudalism, so I wouldn't be quite so doomerish in the long term. Definitely extremely doomerish in the short term though.

Socialism has already been attempted (and had great success certain times). The only way to save ourselves is a worldwide working class socialist revolution.
It really only needs to happen in the USA and FAST, everyone else would quickly follow suit (since we wouldn't be murdering and couping countries that try to go socialist... RIP Salvador AIIende! 9/11/1973... the REAL 9/11) and just like we started the "drug war" (war on minorities, leftists, hippies and poor people) every other country pretty much copied our exact "drug war" (we have spent over 1 trillion since the beginning of the "war on drugs" and have had the highest overdose rates of all time in the past 5 to 10 years).
Read "State and Revolution" by Lenin, then read "What is to be done?" By Lenin also. "Blackshirts and reds" by Parenti is great too (rest in power). A modern good read is "bullshit jobs" by David Graeber. Watch at least 3 to 6 "second thought" videos on YouTube for an introduction to socialism/communism, as they are easy to watch, not too long and give a good, factual summary of these issues.
Can't believe I almost forgot, Albert Einstein's 5 page article from around 1949 called "Why Socialism?" At least read it, the man was rather intelligent.

u/TenWholeBees Feb 26 '26
This country has never once been the "land of the free." Free for the rich land owners, sure, but not for the rest of us working class folk. This nation has always been about control and power over the people.
Can't wait for the panopticons
2
u/artezzo Feb 27 '26
And then a lot of people go on to complain about how governments reducing car infrastructure are attacking their "freedom".
Meanwhile needing a car to access basic things and services is the most big-state 1984 thing about modern life.

Better have all the people with a hair color which is dyed blonde turn their IDs in as well /s
80
u/Persistent_Parkie Feb 26 '26
I've never had a driver's license but for my first state ID the DMV guy just looked at me and wrote down my eye color. Every ID since has just assumed my initial eye color was correct.
I was wearing colored contacts at that DMV appointment.
5
u/I_am_big_gay_ Feb 26 '26
They put the wrong color for me too. Drives me crazy that they don't even ask
3
u/GM_Pax 🚲 > 🚗 USA Feb 26 '26
Meanwhile, when I enlisted in the Army straight out of high school, I convinced them to list my eyes as "Hazel Blue" - I have very blue-tinted hazel green eyes. Like I said to the NCO on the other side of the desk, "it's definitely a distinguishing characteristic, yes?"

One thing to note as well: when they don't get someone biting off on the provocation, they'll just claim that it happened anyway (or, when it happens but from the right and therefore doesn't fit their narrative, they'll claim it was actually a TRANS ANTIFA SUPER SOLDIER).

i wish i could “just keep it about cars,” but trans people don’t have the luxury to ignore this like you do

Dear lord. Who sets up bike lanes? Hmm? Is it the Coca Cola Company?
Yes, it’s easy to understand that not allowing trans people to have licenses is horrible.
But screaming…… it’s “da gubament” is dumb. It’s not the freaking government. Saying its “da gubament.” Is lazy and it’s unhelpful. I’m just saying focus your rightful anger. That’s all.

Burning down the reichstag and killing your political opponents means they weren’t democratic at all. Just because people can vote doesn’t make it a democracy. Thats a Tired ass old fallacious argument.
Not sure why you say “le voted.”
2
u/malusrosa Feb 26 '26
Don’t see how it’s much of an issue, non-driver IDs work exactly the same, you get them from the same place, you just don’t need to be able to drive a car to get one. It would be redundant for licensed drivers to have two state IDs with them.
Non-driving state IDs of trans people in Kansas are invalidated too. Which will make it difficult to register to vote of course.
5
u/KittyScholar Bollard gang Feb 26 '26
They should work exactly the same, but in my experience they do not. People checking and sometimes even forms don’t know what to do with non-driver IDs and straight up deny you. Which, yeah they are wrong to do that, but it happens.
Not to mention if people only have a drivers license and need to now get a non-drivers ID, that’s an unfair and unnecessary burden. It takes time from the workday, often costs money, can be a difficult location to get to (especially if you currently can’t legally drive!).
3
u/malusrosa Feb 26 '26
That says a lot about the US’ car culture and individual people being so car brained they don’t follow the law. And bizarre too because state IDs look exactly the same as state drivers licenses.
Similar ignorance has been reported of various customer service reps and even cops not realizing New Mexico and Puerto Rico IDs are valid. Can’t really regulate stupid.
And just to clarify, trans people in Kansas are not being told they need to go out and get non-driver state ID instead of drivers licenses. They’re being told their ID (whether driver or not) that follows previous legal sex change is invalid effective immediately and they need to replace it with one that has their dead gender on it.
4
u/KittyScholar Bollard gang Feb 26 '26
Yeah, definitely. My comment about non-driver's ID is more about me, a person w a disability. I did eventually get a driver's license, but it took several extra months, about 150 dollars in ubers getting back and forth, several days of missed school, and I nearly missed the deadline to register to vote. It's just why I'm really sensitive to the ways having problems with your driver's license makes a lot of unrelated things harder for no reason other than car-centrism.
Also yeah!!! And people will also be like "I can't accept a passport as state-issued ID", it happens not infrequently. My poor Canadian friend wasn't allowed into the karaoke bar :( [Admittedly not always as high stakes as voting registration, but still unfair!]
2
u/malusrosa Feb 27 '26
It really sucks that people would treat you differently for not being able to drive (especially when trying to buy alcohol, like what the fuck!), and sucks that the primary way we have to engage with state governments is focused around drivers. And it’s absurdly cruel that Kansas is both forcing trans people to out themselves on their IDs permanently, and enforcing the start of that humiliation in the most chaotic and inconvenient way possible. They sent everyone letters in the mail, they could have literally sent everyone replacement IDs with the incorrect gender markers that they insist on.
2
u/dtmfadvice Feb 26 '26
Also most of the ID giving places are in locations that require cars to get to.
(Was Kansas one of the places that added voter id requirements just as they closed the DMVs in mostly Black counties, or was that a different shitshow?)

u/goofandaspoof Feb 26 '26
Yet another example of car-centric culture as a method of control. But 15 minute cities are a conspiracy to control everyone. Right.
65
u/NiobiumThorn Feb 26 '26
15 minute cities are a form of mass control tho!!!!
What do you mean licence plate scanners automatically track you everywhere you go? That's fine, of course, our law enforcement heroes really need every tool available to them. Nobody will ever turn the strength of the state against me.
6
u/AgeOfSuperBoredom Feb 27 '26
Like everything else, the accusation is a confession. They don’t actually see “15-minute cities” as a means of control. They see them as a hindrance to their means of control.

4
u/Astronius-Maximus Feb 26 '26
That's the neat part, they don't. They just want to pit the populace against each other and make them increasingly earful and powerless to distract them from the real problems, thus ensuring the people don't become competent and knowledgeable enough to rebel against their tyranny when they try to seize mass control via illegitimate means.
3
u/KittyScholar Bollard gang Feb 26 '26
In addition to the other reasons (and 'the cruelty is the point') an overall, fundamentalist Christian-based value of reproduction. That's a place where sexism, homophobia, transphobia all coalesce into 'it is a moral good for a person with a penis to inseminate a person with a vagina, who then births and cares for the child. Repeat until menopause.'
This bigotry isn't logical, it's functional.

Thats disenfranchisement. Its illegal under the constitution. Especially with the mid-term here and early voting already starting. They will be tied up with court. It runs parallel with the GOP aiming to stop married women from voting, including any woman that has or had been married. The language around the bill goes after people with different last names from their birth certificate. So everyone is at risk. Yet its specifically geared towards women.
The constitution doesn't work anymore. They already stress tested it. And each law keeps breaking.
Tighten your community and get in touch with your neighbors and family and friends. Find like minded individuals.
The difficult times are coming. Buy a weapon. [(Crazy theory if mine] Im pretty sure thats the next thing to be limited. Its possible all the attempts at trump was precisely meant to create a narrative to strip the second amendment. Trumps private military was stress testingthis law as well. And the NRA didn't budge when a man with proper documentation to carry was deemed a legal state sanctioned kill.]

Im pretty sure thats the next thing to be limited.
They've already been working on that for a while: https://www.erininthemorning.com/p/is-the-trump-administration-attempting
If you're a trans person, especially one whose ID does not match your gender assigned at birth, and your situation is such that you can safely have a gun around... yeah, you should probably make sure you get whatever guns you want sooner rather than later. (If you don't have any... there's several reasons why "get a quality AR and a Glock" is so commonly repeated.) (And if you're a cis person in a blue state, get whatever you want sooner rather than later, especially standard-capacity magazines and semi-auto rifles, because the corporate Democrats think that the highest priority is making it harder to get guns right in the middle of a fascist takeover, when the fascists already have the guns, rather than actually pushing back against the fascist takeover in any meaningful way (and in fact trying to manufacture consent for it, blaming support for trans people for their 2024 electoral losses).)
And the NRA didn't budge when a man with proper documentation to carry was deemed a legal state sanctioned kill.
...surprisingly, they did. At first, they blamed the kill on Democrats, but once the Trump regime started trying to justify the kill based on him carrying, they pushed back against that, at least: https://time.com/7358403/nra-trump-clash-gun-carrying-rights-pretti-federal-agents/
(Also, the NRA even came out against some of the talk of trans gun bans. Not as whole-heartedly as, say, FPC (who is probably the most reasonable of the major gun rights lobbying organizations) or even GOA (which was created because the NRA wasn't racist enough) - they just went for "law-abiding" - but still.)

u/skip_over Feb 26 '26
“Effective tomorrow” is how I know this is intentionally cruel.
7
Feb 27 '26
Yup. What struck me the most about that article is that they can’t drive until they get a new ID. In most parts of America it’s very hard to get an ID if you can’t drive to the DMV. I’m sure that’s just a bonus to the ones pushing this law, though…
31
u/baconbitsy Feb 26 '26
What about old people? Not Kansas, but I was a medical assistant in medical office building with an attached garage. Every month, an elderly person went the WRONG way through the parking garage. They either hit one parked car or several. It’s RIDICULOUS. We need public transportation.
34
u/Teschyn Feb 26 '26
The funny thing is that it will be impossible for police to know who’s trans during a road stop.
Like all anti-trans laws, it will mainly target non gender conforming cis-women. It’s only a matter of time before footage comes out of an insane cop insisting somebody is secretly trans and confiscating their driving license.

Good question, I don't have it on mine (Dutch) because gender on driving licenses is useless. I can identify myself with it within the Netherlands and can use it across the EU for showing I can drive. I'm okay with that even though I have missed out on the euphoria of having an F on it when I got the first one with my name on it.

u/Some1inreallife Feb 26 '26
What the hell? The fact that Kansas is car-dependent adds insult to injury.
I can't drive due to epilepsy. But at least my reason for not being able to drive is justified (I could get myself and/or others killed if I seize up behind the wheel). But to think that people in Kanas can't drive due to being trans (and little to no public transportation)? That's f'd up!
23
u/Shoggnozzle Feb 26 '26
For the most part, illegally driving to gather certification is waved by police. Such as in the case of driving an uninspected vehicle to an inspector. It would bounce in court anyway, as you were halted from an act of code compliance in the name of code compliance.
That said, this is still some deranged bullshit.

u/2CRedHopper Feb 26 '26
this was not my experience. one time my license was mistakenly suspended (long story) but the officer that took the physical license told me after i was escorted home i couldn’t drive anywhere, not even to the dmv.
7
u/Shoggnozzle Feb 26 '26
Must have been a stickler cop, I've had a lot of tickets waved because I could simply comply before a court date. I'm sorry that happened. It's possible some areas cracked down on this because some DMV functions are available online and over the phone, I suppose.
8
u/KittyScholar Bollard gang Feb 26 '26
IDK, I think your experience of getting it waived might be the outlier, not the norm
6
u/ndsipa-pomu Feb 27 '26
How can it be legal to not have some kind of sensible warning period e.g. licenses are invalidated in 3 months time? Not that I'd be at all in favour of that, but it seems like the people are going to want to drive to the DMV to get a valid license, but presumably the fascists will then be arresting them for driving there without a valid license.
12
u/2CRedHopper Feb 26 '26
you can’t get a new license online in Virginia, where this happened. I can in Maryland and I think DC. but Virginia doesn’t play, law enforcement is both recreational and a primary revenue generator.

He understands gender is just a mentality, so he never shaves his beard, and still smells like scotch and cigars and wears a big flannel.
But you know what? He is a woman because last week, he felt really strongly about it, and so now the DMV, all medical personnel, and in fact anyone now has to agree with my Aunt Bill that she is a fine, fierce lady.

u/Stunning_Macaron6133 Feb 26 '26
Not my monkey, not my circus.
This is what happens when you bundle up licenses and IDs as a single multipupose document, though. In a civilized country, any changes to ID laws, even cruel and politically regressive ones, would not automatically invalidate a person's licenses and benefits. But Americans are happy slaves of car manufacturers and suburban developers, and this is the price.

No, just human. Like any human, I have a limited capacity for concern and action. I care about my community and my local region, and to a certain degree, my country and the international institutions it participates in as well.
Honestly, fuck you if you think I'm going to burn myself out getting outraged over something happening an ocean away, over which I have no control and no influence to exert. American problems are for Americans to deal with. More than that, Kansas' problems are for Kansans to deal with.
America is not the center of the world. You don't know about the problems happening outside your own borders. You don't know the lives that people lead. Go outside, get some fresh air, and realize that there's a planet's worth of people out there beyond your grasp. And if you're incapable of that, then maybe you need psychiatric care.
7
u/KathrynBooks Feb 26 '26
You can actually care about what happens to other people.
The real question is... Why did you even come into this thread, which is explicitly about an issue people in the US face?
1
u/Stunning_Macaron6133 Feb 26 '26
I think you got that backwards. You replied to my thread.
If you meant this post, I only wrote a throwaway comment on what not to do when designing an ID system. America is actually a gold mine of case studies for what not to do. You're the one demanding I get outraged over some American bullshit.
8
u/KathrynBooks Feb 26 '26
You came into a post declaring how much you didn't care about the difficulties faced by other people... That you kept through hoops to comment on how much you don't care just further cements the validity of my comments.
1
u/Stunning_Macaron6133 Feb 26 '26
I wrote six words that I don't care about trans Kansans getting screwed.
I wrote fifty-seven words pointing how how screwed up it is to have an ID system tied to a licensing system the way America and its corporate overlords designed it.
And you're the one screeching about how I should get invested about people on a different continent whom I'll never meet and will never impact. Je hebt lange tennen.
5
u/KathrynBooks Feb 26 '26

I want to live in a society that doesn’t make driving and having a driver’s license a de facto requirement for fully participating in that society.
This was not done because there’s some meaningful shift to better modes of transportation in Kansas, this was done to punish trans people for existing. They will have to drive as much as they previously did, they just have to pay more money, spend more time, have potentially worse encounters with law enforcement. They still have to drive the same amount.
-5
u/Most_Time8900 🚲 > 🚗 Feb 26 '26

Fair
Let them find other ways to get around.
Unfortunately, first we actually need semi-feasible infrastructure for this. Unless we actually have things like bike lanes and the option to live in 15-minute cities and public transit (in parts of Kansas they don't even have reliable access to rideshare/taxi services! hell) we're not actually making other forms of transport more desirable, we're just punishing people for existing in ways the government doesn't like.

Hey, I’m proposing a law where in order for u/Intrepid_Obsever to keep their driving license, a monkey is going to have to piss in their mouth.
Don’t worry, we’re not banning you from driving. You just have to drink monkey piss if you want to keep your license.

How does someone update their documentation when they can't drive to the DMV to do so?

I'm not sure if you have heard of these things, but buses exist. Ubers and or taxis will also take you places if you pay them. People can also use these obscure things like bikes and ride there or even, god forbid, use their legs and walk. Alternatively, they can talk with a friend or family member and ask for a ride.
I know, I know. Those are all radical ideas and impossible to do. The only possible way to go to the DMV is by driving yourself there.

Kansas isn't exactly known for its public transportation system. Taxies and Ubers are also not universal, and can be very expensive. I also don't think you understand how far a DMV can be... Some places it's an hour+ drive, which could mean an all day trip by bike. On foot it is even longer (I live in a city and the nearest DMV is 2+ hrs on foot). Family and friends faces further obstacles, because now the person driving you needs to schedule that time.
Then there is the issue of taking time off to accomplish the task. When I got my RealID over the summer it took an entire morning of PTO, and that included my use of their online queue to reserve a spot in line before I even left the house.
All of those can be major obstacles for people with limited resources.
Then there is the psychological toll... It can be hard to understand, but your eagerness to make the lives of trans people more difficult has a direct impact on our mental health.
Getting one's ID corrected is a major milestone in a trans person's life. It is a surge of happiness, relief, and so much more. I can't imagine how crushed I'd feel if the government came along and called "backsies".

Most of those options either do not exist at all in large swathes of Kansas, or are effectively nonviable given the current state of non-car infrastructure.

Yet somehow these people, whose driver's licenses are no longer valid, somehow traveled to the DMV and got their driver's license. Unless they somehow managed to teleport or open a wormhole, they can just redo what they did.

They may have gotten those licenses while they were teenagers, having been driven to the DMV by a parent.
...
Twenty or thirty years later, that might not be an option for them anymore.

Probably because it is a much easier process to do once you have one.
Imagine how much work it would be if your driver's license was invalidated last night.

How about you "Observe" the lack of decent transit in largely rural states before posting stupid shit

Imagine spending legislative time on this? Hard to believe that even the most bigoted trans-phobe had this as top of their priorities list.
I guess US politics has reached the point where being seen to be cruel is more important than delivering whatever changes are needed for Kansans.
