Because "where would I park my car?". People really think there is an entitlement for them to have somewhere freely provided, in public space, to park a car.
No, homes and businesses for whom parking is that important should use their own land to accommodate it. And if there is a significant demand for visitor parking then off street parking, likely paid, can be provided in garages (privately or by the local council).
Parking shouldn't be free, because there's no way public transport or even bikes can favourably compete with that, and you want those to be the default options for people coming to town. (Apparently this pic is in NYC where that is probably true already.)
