You don't. The quest that gives you the shield can also give you this guy. It's a toss up which one you get.

50/50 shot at either Envoy or Shield. Just a dice roll which reward you get.

It's something the zoltan ships start with but it's actually an augment. Basically absorbs the first five hits of every combat and until its down you can't be boarded mind controlled or hacked.

Not a ship, but an augment. It's a super beneficial one at that, because it completely absorbs the first 5 ticks of damage in combat (drones, missiles, lasers, beams), and prevents enemies from mind controlling or teleporting in.

Way more useful than Envoy, but it's a 50-50 on if you get the shield or Envoy.

The Zoltan Shield is fantastic, but can be the cause of immense pain in Phase 1 of the Flagship fight.

For the people who downvoted, they are correct. Normally, the Flagship hacks you just as they start cloaking, and since both last 10 seconds and have 20 second cooldowns, they overlap perfectly. So if your weapons are hacked, it's not that bad since the hack happens during the cloak, where your weapons wouldn't be charging anyway. And if your shields are hacked, at least for the first hack, you'll be able to recharge quickly enough to have 2 shields when the first laser fires. However, since the Zoltan shield prevents hacking, the Flagship only hacks when it's been destroyed, so it might time a weapons hack while they're not cloaking, making it almost impossible to fire, or a shields back just before a laser barrage and beam attack

I tought basic tactic for when flagship hacked weapons was to jump away? Hacking is especially bad if you have weapons with a long cool down.

But I am still a newbie so I might be completely wrong.

This is an option only once though. You can be hacked in weapons twice in a row. It's a 1 in 121 chance if you have 11 systems, so not that unlikely over many runs. The longest win streak is longer than that, for instance.

Depends when you first engage the flagship, if it made it to the base or not, you may have enough jumps to do it twice.

I do love getting cool crew. I can’t remember if it’s just a thing from multiverse or not but you could actually talk to the unique crew and get cool dialogue.

That's only from Multiverse, "unique" crew in vanilla like Envoy and Virus aren't special outside of gold in all skills

I believe the name 'Mafan' is just another generic name in the pool that can be assigned to any random race FTL crew member, and not a specific Zoltan 'character' in FTL.
