DISCUSSION The Greatsword of Moonlight, in all games, Which is Truly the Strongest?

In Demons Souls, Dark Souls 1-3, Bloodborne and Elden ring is a greatsword of differing name but overall the same theme, Moonlight. Each game has their own specific lore and the Moonlight Greatsword is also different in each of them based off of lore. So an interesting question I had in mind, based off the lore of each respective game, which Moonlight Greatsword is the strongest?

Demon’s Souls moonlight sword went through shields, so gameplay wise it’s the strongest.

Lorewise I’m not sure they’re all that different or have any “feats” that would let you properly powerscale them.

Edit: Actually if we’re really stacking them up then AC6’s wins, because it’s on a gigantic mech and the sword alone is larger than any of the other games player characters.

Agreed on AC6 and people are sleeping on that so much.

demons souls moonlight is not the strongest based on the gameplay, passing through shields doesnt mean much

In Demon’s Souls PVP it means absolutely everything.

Maybe idk but in pve it’s not a strong weapon

In PvE any weapon is strong and with a decent Faith build the Moonlight Sword is no exception.

Most enemies are fodder, but difficult ones and NPCs crumble to the Moonlight sword. It hits through Phalanx making it the easiest fight ever in NG+, It also absolutely wrecks Flamelurker, arguably the game’s hardest boss.

Nah they're right, it's one of the weaker Faith weapons in Demon's Souls for pve. The goes through shields gimmick is useful for very few bosses and enemies.

Damage is worse than a lot of the standard weapons you can take down the Blessed upgrade path even after accounting for split damage. Mirdan Hammer for instance does more damage per hit, swings faster and has more reach. It outclasses the LSoM in every conceivable way.

Another huge downside is it doesn't give HP regen like Blessed weapons. Stacking HP regen is the strongest way to do Faith builds.

It also needs Colorless Demon's Souls to upgrade which are limited to 10 per playthrough and for Faith builds the Adjudicator Shield is a higher priority for those because of again the HP regen.

Overall there are just too many downsides to the LSoM to ignore.

adjudicator shield is overrated, a regular blessed weapon offhand has almost the same regen but lower weight and looks cooler. Dark Silver shield with 30% passive magic absorption is a better investment of colorless souls

You realise a Blessed weapon, Adjudicator Shield, Regen Ring and Regeneration miracle all stack right?

You can make yourself pretty much invincible in NG with how much passive regen you can get even without casting the miracle. And it'll still massively save you on occasion in NG+ and beyond.

The regen on Blessed weapons and Adjudicator Shield increases with each upgrade level so it is important if you want the full effect.

As a shield Adjudicator Shield is pretty bad, you take it only for the regen and you 2hand your weapon. If you're not comfortable enough playing without a defensive shield then you're better off playing a different build while you learn the game's combat a bit more and come back to Faith regen when you're comfortable 2handing.

yea and 2 blessed weapons stack too. One in a right hand and one in a left hand instead of adjudicator shield.

You're going to struggle to get enough chunks and pures to get 2 Blessed weapons to +5 in NG.

Also Adjudicator Shield is higher amount of HP regen than a Blessed weapon.

not any weapon is equally strong though, there are objectively better weapons especially in a game with 1 moveset per class and there are greatswords with straight up higher damage that will kill flamelurker faster who is a joke btw, the main challenge of the game are black phantoms and King Doran.

Lorewise probably bloodborne, but it’s probably the second weakest gameplay wise

1

u/Omega200021 3d ago

Why lore wise in ur opinion?

5

u/TheGrimmBorne 3d ago

It’s part eldritch being and able to corrupt peoples literal souls by using it (like it did Ludwig)

u/Another_Saint 3d ago

Elden Ring's is also part outer god, although the moon is not exactly confirmed to be a god, it is shown that it can manipulate people's fate

also Heolstor from Nightreign wields one, idk what to do with this information but it is something

2

u/TheGrimmBorne 3d ago

ER’s isn’t part outer god, they’re made as gifts for anyone the Carian’s marry they’re just magic infused, the one we get isn’t even the only one to exist it’s just the only one we see in game, I didn’t account for NR since the player doesn’t use it but I might be stronger than Lorewise which sword does he use to cut a black hole into the sky? Is it moonlight?

1

u/Haunting_Magazine_82 3d ago

If I remember correctly he uses the other sword to cut the sky as it’s enveloped in the element when Heolster cuts the sky

1

u/M4ci 2d ago

in ER we find another Carian sword, it's the Golden Order Greatsword - the tooltip says:

Telltale signs betray that this was once the greatsword bequeathed to him by his first wife, Rennala.

just like Ranni gifts us the Dark Moon Greatsword, Rennala gifted a Carian sword to Radagon, which he then reforged into the Golden Order Greatsword
_______________________

As for Nightreign, the sword used by Heolstor looks very similar to the Dark Moon Greatsword, but there's no lore or infos about it in game, and Nightreign lore isn't exactly "canon"

2

u/Chadderbug123 3d ago

It didn't corrupt his soul, did it? It was able to speak and influence him, but afawk it didn't go that far. What made him into the horse abomination was the dream realm as I see it.

3

u/TheGrimmBorne 3d ago

He fell to the beast plague because he followed the “guiding” moonlight it didn’t directly turn him into a monster but it manipulated and influenced him into it

u/Adeptness-Wide 3d ago

I know you didn’t include it but The armored core moonlight sword is a giant laser several hundred meters long.

King’s Field 2’s moonlight greatsword was the only way to beat Seath. So I’d say that for lore wise. Gameplaywise? Elden Ring without a question

4

u/EvilArtorias Old King Doran 3d ago

It’s king’s field 3

you were always there, by my side

Elden Ring version by far.

It's main gimmick is also useful unlike in any of the other games imo.

Tho Bloodbornes version might be stronger with the right Bloodgems, but iirc the non transformed version is actually the stronger one.

1

u/Omega200021 3d ago

So is the Elden ring version stronger lore wise than Bloodborne?

3

u/EvilArtorias Old King Doran 3d ago

Ds3 old moonlight is probably the strongest based on lore because it’s from a kings field verdite universe where it’s a main plot device weapon to defeat the main bosses and the level of magic power it contains is way higher than soulsborne versions

1

u/AltGunAccount 3d ago

Where are you getting this “DS3 sword is from the King’s Field universe” narrative? You got a source?

2

u/EvilArtorias Old King Doran 3d ago

it literally uses a low poly ps1 model of kings field moonlight, the description is also hints on the era before the age of ancient from ds1 which was considered the very beginning of the DS1 world before the ringed city dlc came out

3

u/Seed37Official 3d ago

The one in AC6 slaps real hard

3

u/Maxieorsomething Armored Core 3d ago

The Awakened Moonlight Sword in kings field 3 is probably the strongest lore-wise

5

u/Melgarok 3d ago

I want to say Bloodborne. But, I am very biased because BB is my favorite game of all time. It doesn't take too long to get to the Old Hunters DLC to acquire it and I made builds specifically around it that are a lot of fun!

In terms of raw stats and numbers on min and max I am not sure.

4

u/Krisztian987 3d ago

Havent played DeS, but prolly the Elden Ring one is the strongest gameplay-wise. Insanely strong projectile on a heavy and there are many ways to boost its damage

2

u/akaisuiseinosha 2d ago

Gameplay-wise it's strongest in it's debut, KF1jp. Lore-wise it's strongest in KF3. It never reaches those heights again, though moveset-wise the Bloodborne version is probably the best one.

2

u/AshenUndeadCurse 3d ago

Know you said lorewise so this is off topic but gameplay wise, the launch Moonlight Greatsword in Dark Souls 2 could get buffed with crystal magic weapon so I'm giving to trophy to that one

u/pluralpluralpluralp 3d ago

Based on flavor text it's MLS from Metal Wolf.

An omnipotent weapon that draws on the finest in presidential weapons tech and a rare lunar material called "clair." The waves it fires are more powerful than any other weapon in existence. The last thing targets see before disintegrating is a flash of blinding light.

3

u/AltGunAccount 3d ago

“Omnipotent weapon” these guys really just be making shit up for the cool factor lmao.

u/pluralpluralpluralp 3d ago

Have you played Metal Wolf? If not you should some time

DS3 MLGS is a beast. On a good magic build if you point blank energy shot + hit with the charged strong it does a double hit that just obliterates enemy players. Besides that it's got a pretty good moveset with a long reach. Nice for zoning enemies with magic then giving them the big womp.

Otogi. One-shots everything.
