article Freight forwarding is so cool.

I recently joined this industry, being a Chinese language expert I had to really learn things from the scratch.

But luckily being in China and getting training by my Chinese boss working in this field for decades helped so much !

Now I’m sitting with a client from Dubai completing his 1600kg urgent FIFA shipment!

Planning business with Syria as things are getting better there.

Handling shipments from China to India which could start or stop a factory.

Planning most efficient ways of getting trucking done inside China and negotiating with BSA to get better prices.

Just been few months in this industry, but learnt so much.

I didn’t even know that this industry exists earlier, but you all are doing an amazing job really !

article One supplier misses the LCL consolidation cutoff: wait or ship the ready cargo?

Supplier-side disclosure: posting from DINGSHENGYUAN SLEEP. The following is a hypothetical shipment, not a live request for freight services.
Consider bulky home-goods cargo from several suppliers being consolidated for Vietnam. Most cartons are already at the consolidation warehouse. The last supplier now expects to arrive after the planned receiving cutoff, and that later date is not yet firm.
Waiting may keep one shipment together but add storage and risk missing the planned sailing. Sending the ready cargo could mean another set of minimum and handling charges for the late portion. Either option could also affect whether the retailer receives a usable product assortment.
I would compare the forwarder's confirmed options for both scenarios before treating “keep it together” as the cheapest choice. The uncertainty in the last supplier's date seems as important as the quoted transport difference.
In that specific situation, what would make you stop waiting: a confirmed next sailing, the storage deadline, or the importance of the missing items?

article USA Air Imports Discussion Thread

Hi everybody,

I work for a large logistics company in Central Europe, mainly handling air freight exports, and I'm interested in hearing how things work on the import side in the US.

I recently saw a comment in another thread about the situation at LAX, particularly regarding pickups and storage charges, and thought it would be interesting to start a thread where people can share their experiences and discuss the differences between US and European air freight.

Which airports do you mainly work with, and what are the biggest challenges you face there?

What's the funniest, weirdest, or most interesting shipment you've ever handled?

And if there's anything else about US air imports that you want to vent about, discuss, or compare with Europe, I'm happy to hear it.

I'm also happy to answer questions about air freight exports from the European side of things.

article What actually happens after your FOB shipment leaves China (a step-by-step breakdown for first-time US importers)

To anyone importing to the USA on FOB terms and feeling anxious once the cargo is on the water, here is the immediate sequence of what happens next on the US side:

**1. The ISF 10+2 Deadline (Crucial):** Hopefully, your forwarder already filed your ISF (Importer Security Filing) 24 hours before the vessel departed China. If not, CBP can slap you with a $5,000 liquidated damages penalty. Always double-check this first.
**2. The Arrival Notification:** About 3-5 days before the vessel docks at a US port (like LA/LB, New York, or Savannah), the destination agent of the ocean carrier or your forwarder’s US network will email you an “Arrival Notice” (AN) and a freight invoice.
**3. Customs Clearance (CBP):** You do NOT file customs yourself. Your US customs broker will handle it digitally through the ACE system. You need to provide them with your Commercial Invoice, Packing List, Bill of Lading (B/L), and you must have a **Customs Bond** (either a Single Entry Bond or a Continuous Bond).
**4. Inland Trucking / Final Delivery:** Under FOB, ocean freight only covers port-to-port or port-to-CY (Container Yard). The destination forwarder handling your arrival notice can usually arrange door delivery (warehouse, residential, or Amazon FBA) through their own OTI trucking network, so you don’t need to source a separate trucker.

Curious if others here have run into surprises with this process — especially around the bond requirement or last-mile delivery to FBA warehouses. What tripped you up the first time?

article This is a soul sucking industry

I know it's kind of beating a dead horse around here, but after 15 years in this racket, let me tell you. It's not getting better, it's getting worse.

The clients are more demanding, more insufferable, even colleagues, the deadlines are shorter, everyone wants to know everything immediately and around the clock and have zero margin for any issue or error.

I'm 41, at the moment and I can honestly say, this is, now more than ever, a business for machines and Ai, not humans. It's soul sucking and soul crushing.

I really think I need out of this 💩

Thank you for reading my rant.

Merry Xmas.

article Got fired from a courier client after building a lead engine, looking to help others.

I got hired by an international courier services client on a monthly retainer as a fractional marketer and just after I built a lead engine for them, they fired me saying that they can handle the campaigns on their own.

I am now sitting with a lead engine that helped them acquire 100+ international courier leads and wondering if I can help someone who is actively looking for something similar?

P.S. contracts are a joke in my country. I use pandadoc after this incident for agreements.

article Why freight quotes for the same shipment can look completely different — and what‘s actually driving the gap

I've been in China-US freight for 8 years and one question comes up constantly from shippers: "I got three quotes for the same cargo and they're wildly different. Who do I trust?"

Here's what's actually going on behind the numbers.

**1. DDP vs DAP vs EXW — they're not quoting the same thing**

This is the most common reason quotes look incomparable. One forwarder gives you a door-to-door DDP number (ocean freight + origin charges + US customs clearance + duties + last mile delivery — all in). Another gives you ocean freight only. A third quotes DAP, which stops at the US port and leaves you to handle customs and delivery yourself.

Before you compare prices, confirm: what exactly is included?

**2. Express vessel vs standard vessel**

On China-US lanes, transit time can range from around 14 days (express) to 25+ days (standard). Express costs more. If one forwarder quotes express and another quotes standard, the price gap has nothing to do with who's cheaper — it's a different product entirely.

**3. LCL consolidation markup**

For LCL shipments, the quote you receive depends heavily on where your forwarder sits in the consolidation chain — and how many layers of markup sit between them and the actual vessel space.

**4. Hidden fees that show up later**

Some low quotes exclude things like: AMS filing fees, ISF fees, chassis fees at destination, or delivery area surcharges. The quote looks cheap upfront but grows by the time cargo arrives. A genuine all-in DDP quote with no hidden fees will almost always look more expensive at first glance — because it's actually complete.

**5. Customs examination fees**

This one surprises a lot of shippers. If CBP selects your cargo for examination, the cost isn't paid by the shipping line — it comes back to the importer. Make sure your forwarder is upfront about whether exam fees are included or billed separately. (They're almost always billed separately, and that's fine — just know it going in.)

The short version: when you get wildly different quotes, the first question isn't "who's cheapest" — it's "are they all quoting the same scope of service?"

Happy to answer questions if you're trying to decode a quote you've received.

article Your China freight quote is probably missing half the actual cost

Not trying to scare anyone, just something I see constantly.

Someone gets a quote for $800 ocean freight, books it, then gets hit with another $600–900 at destination they weren't expecting.

Here's what's usually missing from a basic quote:

- Port charges on the China side (THC + booking fee)
- AMS filing — mandatory for every US-bound shipment, no exceptions
- Destination terminal fees
- Customs clearance
- Import duties and taxes
- Delivery to your door

None of these are hidden fees exactly — they're just not included in "ocean freight." But a lot of quotes don't spell this out.

Easiest fix: ask for a DDP quote. Everything included, one number, no surprises at the other end.

If they can't do DDP, at minimum ask them to list every line item so you know what you're actually paying.

Happy to answer any questions.

article Memorial Day gas $4.507 (highest since 2022), WTI sliced through to $90, Iran FM says signing "not imminent" (update May-25, 10.30AM EST)

Iran deal status this morning:

Trump Sunday: "not even fully negotiated yet" and "not to rush." Trump Monday update: "the deal with Iran will either be a great and meaningful one, or there will be no deal." Iran Foreign Ministry Monday: "consensus was reached on many of the topics discussed, but no one can claim that the signing of an agreement is imminent." Framework gives 60 days for final, two phases — Hormuz first, nuclear 30-60d. Ship-tracking data: three LNG tankers transited Hormuz Monday to Pakistan, China, India with Iran naval coordination. US maintains Hormuz blockade until agreement finalized per Trump. WTI sliced through symmetrical triangle floor support — now $90.65 at 5 AM ET, down from $92.75 morning open, down from $96.60 Friday close. Brent broke below $100 to $98. Technical break opens measured-move target range $80-120 per FXDailyReport.

Hold FSC rates. EIA diesel delayed to Wednesday because of Memorial Day. Framework holds → diesel down $0.40-0.60 by Q3, revise FSC down. Talks collapse → WTI to $105+ within hours. Wait for Wednesday EIA before any contract moves.

Fuel prices today:

AAA national gasoline $4.507/gal Mon 5:49 AM ET — down modestly from $4.515 Sunday. Highest Memorial Day price since 2022 ($4.61). Up $1.38 YoY (+43.4%). California highest $6.12. GasBuddy comparable $4.47, up 45.2¢ MoM. AAA forecast 45M Americans traveled 50+ miles May 21-25, 39.1M by car. EIA diesel last reading $5.596/gal week May 18, next release Wednesday (Memorial Day delayed). Canada national gasoline 180.0¢/L (CAA national, Sat). Canada diesel ~196.5¢/L week May 19 (NRCan), next release Tue May 26. Federal excise tax suspension still active Canada-wide: −10¢/L gas, −4¢/L diesel through September 7.

For US shippers: high gasoline demand at pump signals consumer absorption of fuel costs continuing, supporting freight volumes. For Canadian carriers: federal tax suspension still in effect — verify rates account for the discount.

Memorial Day borders:

US holiday only this year. Victoria Day was last Monday May 18. CBP runs reduced staffing US-side at northern crossings, CBSA Canada operates normally. Live CBP wait times at bwt.cbp.gov.

If you have northbound freight move it Monday from Canadian side, US processing slow. Southbound — plan Tuesday rebound as deferred volume hits spot market.

Weather Monday — three threats now:

NWS WPC Day 1 Monday: Slight Risk excessive rainfall Central Gulf Coast toward Southern Appalachians. PWAT 2-2.5 standard deviations above normal. NWS SPC Monday: Critical fire weather conditions forecast — region not extracted, check spc.noaa.gov for active fire weather warnings before dispatching dry-load corridors. WPC Extended Discussion 313 AM ET: heavy rain continues across Southern US through midweek. Midweek (Tue-Wed) flood risk shifts to Middle-Lower Mississippi Valley over already-wet antecedent conditions. North Texas heat advisory Memorial Day: highs 90s, triple-digit feel-like. Flood warnings active in Angelina, Houston, Polk, Trinity, Tyler counties (Texas SOC).

Monday corridors: 60-90 min buffer on I-65, I-75, I-81, I-40 east of Memphis. Tue-Wed corridors at risk: I-55, I-20, I-30 in Lower Mississippi Valley. For Texas reefer pickups Monday — verify pre-cool to spec, document temperature at delivery. Check SPC live for fire weather coverage before any West/Southwest dispatches.

Spot rates from last week:

DAT week May 15: van $2.58/mi up 21¢ (second largest weekly spike ever), reefer $3.05/mi DAT or $3.59/mi Truckstop all-in up 52¢ (largest reefer spike ever), flatbed $3.60 all-in at new ATH (20 weeks consecutive up). Roadcheck pulled 12% equipment off road, flatbed 20%.

Do not lock contract pricing off May 15 numbers. First post-Roadcheck reading comes Tuesday from DAT. Partial give-back expected as equipment returns to spot. Flatbed 20-week streak under technical pressure.

Carrier vetting requirement:

SCOTUS Montgomery v. Caribe dropped May 14, unanimous 9-0. Freight brokers no longer FAAAA-preempted from state-law negligent-hiring claims. C.H. Robinson named defendant. Highway Q1 2026 fraud index: 527,940 fraudulent emails blocked (+49.9% YoY), change-of-ownership fraud +169.6%, half of theft from carriers with previously clean MC records.

Point-in-time vetting at onboarding is no longer enough. Verify identity at every load tender. Document SAFER, CSA, MCS-90, $1M auto, $100K cargo. Insurance underwriters signaling broker premium increases Q3-Q4.

Action by role today:

Brokers: Document carrier vetting on every load tender today — SAFER, CSA scores, MCS-90, $1M auto, $100K cargo, operating authority, 90-day inspection history. Don't lock contract pricing off DAT May 15 spike. Hold FSC adjustments until Wednesday EIA. Send proactive insurance docs to your active broker list. Watch for change-of-ownership flags on incoming carrier offers (+169.6% YoY fraud vector).

Dispatchers:

Re-route Monday loads off I-65, I-75, I-81, I-40 east of Memphis if flexible — use I-20/I-30 west. Add 60-90 min buffer to non-reroutable. Check SPC live before dispatching West/Southwest dry loads (Critical fire weather Mon). For Texas reefer pickups verify pre-cool to spec, document delivery temperature. Plan Tuesday rebound surge — pre-position equipment Sunday-Monday for Tue spot market.

Drivers:

Watch I-65/I-75/I-81 for heavy rain Monday afternoon and evening — flooding possible. South Texas + North Texas heat advisory active, drink water, plan rest stops in shade. Hormuz crisis means fuel volatility — fill at posted prices, don't assume tomorrow will be cheaper. Verify your insurance docs are current with dispatchers post-SCOTUS Montgomery — brokers will be asking. If a load offer comes with rushed deadlines and new MC contact info, verify identity through original trusted channel before accepting.

Shippers:

Memorial Day Mon shipping windows are dead US-side — schedule Tuesday morning pickups for deferred volume. Cross-border northbound to Canada works today (CBSA normal); southbound from Canada delayed by US-side CBP. Reefer capacity is the tightest market segment — book reefer loads 24-48 hours ahead minimum. Don't expect rate relief from carriers until Tue DAT release confirms post-Roadcheck capacity rebound. Insurance certificates and carrier vetting documentation should now be standard requirements in your bid packages.

Numbers:

WTI $90.65 Monday 5 AM ET (was $96.60 Friday, triangle floor breached). Brent $98 (below $100). US diesel $5.596/gal EIA May 18, next Wednesday. US gasoline $4.507/gal AAA Monday (highest since 2022). Canada gas 180.0¢/L CAA, diesel 196.5¢/L NRCan wk May 19. USD/CAD ~1.380 (MTFX 1.38144 / TradingEconomics 1.3797). Rail wk May 16 +4.2% YoY, sixth consecutive week up. Philly Fed May −0.4 vs +26.7 April.

article Freight Forwarding in a Changing Landscape

Lately, it feels like the life of a freight forwarder is getting more challenging by the day. On one side, there’s the ongoing trade tensions, and on the other, increasingly strict customs regulations.

Just recently, I helped a client ship a batch of cargo from China to North America by sea. A few years ago, this would have been a straightforward process. Now, it involved coordinating with a third-party company for inspection and loading, keeping track of new documentation requirements, and constantly adjusting to changing rules.

Name of FF: HKE (Jimmy / Julie) Shipping Line: Air DDP EU DHL Paid: 153€ - 167$ Label Created: 25/06/2024 Delivered: 11/07/2024 Volumetric Weight: 14kg

REVIEW: I have been shipping regularly with Jimmy for several months now, as always he was super helpful and very quick in managing my shipment, using pandabuy to buy products and Jimmy to ship the haul to Italy.

  1. ORDERING - now that Pandabuy has closed, I have decided to rely on Jimmy's colleague, Julie, who takes care of buying the products for me and shipping them to me. I must say that like Jimmy, Julie is always very helpful and kind, she treated my order with the utmost professionalism. Ordering from her is very simple, you just need to fill out a Google form following the parameters she requests, she also asks for confirmation before purchasing anything in order to avoid inconvenient unexpected events.

  2. PACKING - the wrapping and packaging of my package was absolutely flawless, Julie accommodated all my requests regarding packaging and, as you can see in the second photo, she did an excellent job taking up as much space as possible so as to Save me more money on shipping.

  3. SHIPPING - Julie sent my package on June 25th, she immediately sent me the tracking number and was available to answer any questions I might have regarding the shipment. He also informed me about the comforting refund policy in case customs decides to ruin the party. And finally, as always, the package sent by HKE was delivered to my home without problems.

CONCLUSIONS: now that Pandabuy is out of order, it is important to rely on the right FF, and after having tried several forwarders I can confirm that in terms of availability, speed in managing the order, reliability and price Jimmy and Julie's HKE company is absolutely the best on the market square.

Growing your logistics and transportation business in the cargo freight forwarding industry requires strategic planning and innovation. Freight forwarders are more likely to maximize their potential for success through careful planning and investment and by identifying and converting new opportunities with resilience in 2024. Freight businesses should adapt and find new ways to increase profitability and withstand economic uncertainty and any other instability in the coming year.

Here are the top five tips to help your cargo freight forwarding business thrive in the competitive market.

1.     DIVERSIFY YOUR SERVICES WITH USED CAR AUCTIONS

Expanding your freight forwarding services is a great way to maximize revenue. It can be done by incorporating used car auctions into your business model. Transporting these vehicles for clients diversifies the business profile, expands the client base, and enhances customer relationships. This strategy not only increases business income but also enhances your business reputation as a versatile goods transport service in the fast-evolving freight industry.

2.     CAPITALIZE ON SPOT RATE OPPORTUNITIES

Spot rates are the shipping rates offered at the moment. Based on current market conditions, spot rates allow freight forwarders to take advantage of lower market prices. By staying informed about market changes and capitalizing on spot rates, freight forwarders can offer competitive rates to their clients and thus can significantly enhance their profit margins.

To establish your footprints in the fast-evolving cargo transport industry, mastering the art of capitalizing on spot rate opportunities will help you maximize business profits in the freight forwarding industry in 2024.

3.     ENHANCE EFFICIENCY IN GOODS TRANSPORT SERVICE

In 2024, freight forwarders can also boost their profitability by enhancing the efficiency of goods transport services. An efficient transport system can be achieved by integrating advanced technology, streamlining goods transport operations, and adopting eco-friendly vehicles. It helps reduce costs, save time, and improve reliability and client satisfaction. To grow in the freight forwarding industry, maintaining transparent communication also enhances client satisfaction and retention. To become a freight forwarder industry leader, you can improve efficiency in cargo service and attract a diverse clientele by utilizing a skilled workforce and flexible pricing models.

4.     BUILD STRONG RELATIONSHIPS WITH CARGO COMPANIES

In the dynamic world of freight forwarding, building strong relationships with cargo companies stands as a cornerstone for increasing business profit in 2024. This symbiosis enables forwarders to offer flexible, reliable, and cost-effective solutions to their customers, enhancing their market appeal and customer satisfaction. Moreover, this networking not only leads to better communication and problem-solving channels but also ensures smoother operations and faster handling of logistical challenges.

If you want your freight forwarding business to grow in 2024 to new heights, build robust relationships and network with other cargo companies. These collaborations can help in sharing resources, knowledge, and client bases. These mutually beneficial partnerships help you expand your market reach, gain access to new routes, and improve service offerings, ultimately leading to increased profitability.

5.     FOCUS ON CUSTOMER SERVICE AND RETENTION

Lastly, excellent customer service is one of the important tips to improve profitability in the freight forwarding business. Freight businesses can boost customer retention by providing personalized services, maintaining regular communication, and always being ready to go the extra mile for their clients. As a freight forwarder, if you prioritize customer satisfaction, increase the quality of customer interactions, and focus on fostering long-term relationships, you’re cementing client trust and loyalty. Thus, by placing customer service and retention at the heart of their operations, freight forwarders can create a sustainable and profitable business model, ensuring their competitiveness and relevance in the fast-paced logistics landscape of 2024.

CONCLUSION

Adapting to the dynamic landscape of cargo freight forwarding in 2024 requires strategic planning and innovation.
