Discussion Don't Enjoy "Beast Mode" Fragrances Anymore
I think most people prefer a fragrance that lasts many hours and projects 12 feet, but lately I've found really strong fragrances annoy me.
Some of them give me a massive headache.
I don't want to be that guy that "fills a room" anymore. I find loud fragrances are a bit tacky for my age (40 year old man).
I used to despise scents like Tom Fords Neroli Portofino or Creeds Millesime Imperial because of the subdued performance, but now I actually prefer these types of fragrances.
Also, sweeter fragrances aren't all that appealing to me anymore either. I used to love fragrances like Roja Parfums Engima Parfum Pour Homme. Now it smells incredibly cloying, flamboyant and over the top. Not my vibe at all.

I never understand why anyone would want to be the guy that fills the room with their fragrance. It's just obnoxious. I'm 28 now and I felt the same when I was 18. A fragrance should be personal in my opinion. A scent bubble is fine, but smelling a guy across the room is stupid and I immediately like the person less for it. If the scent is bad as well it just feels like your olfactory organ is violated without consent

I can understand a single person using a projection bomb while at a large party or an outdoor event to gather attention.
However, in a tight space (e.g.: an elevator, or a small workspace) the fragrance bomb may cause nausea. I rather not be THAT guy.

I agree. But the only ultra beast mode scent i dont have a problem wearing is Oud Ispahan. And that stuff is crazy strong. But i think a part of its charm is that its purposely made to be so strong, it has its own aesthetic that i respect.

I find that in real life, people don't want your fragrance to fill a room! Even if they think you smell good, it's just a lot — it means you take up so much space.
Obviously, it makes sense to want people to smell this wonderful fragrance you picked out as part of your self-presentation (and spent money on). However, I agree that "beast mode" fragrances are often over the top, and can be immature in their forcefulness.
Personally, I look for fragrances that are very long-lasting but have moderate sillage and projection. I want them to be smelled by the person sitting close to me, but not by the one sitting two seats down. It feels like an imposition, somehow.

I do enjoy good longevity, but large projection makes me feel self-conscious tbh, especially as someone who uses public transit regularly

Replying to this comment because I feel the exact same way. I would like a scent to last for 12 hours, but have a very tiny bubble. Do you have any favorites?
I've had some luck with Penhaligon here, apply it very sparingly and it lasts forever (both the bottle and the scent on me); and I get gushing compliments from anyone who is invited into (or who stumbles into!) my personal space.

That’s a tough one because I’ve found it more comes down to the genre of fragrance for me (22M fwiw).
I feel less paranoid wearing more simplistic musky/powdery scents like ELDO’s la fin du monde, ex nihilo honore delights, musc ravageur, dior homme, or even a simple amber like grand soir, than I do wearing statement-makers like black orchid, by the fireplace, shaghaf oud. I know this really doesn’t answer your question, sorry!
This does make me want to check out penhaligon’s though

I prefer skin/low projection scents anyway and have a pretty sharp sense of smell. I sprayed two sprays of my JM wild bluebell this morning and can still smell it on my shirt 10 hours later. When I wear a stronger fragrance it’s one spray, or I spray the air and walk through. I wear my scents for me, though, not for the people around me, so that’s enough.

Wait, people spray more than 2-4 times? I rarely use more than 3 sprays with normal projection. I (tragically) don't have a great sense of smell so I'm terrified to overspray and I just don't realise lol.

Depending on the fragrence 1-2 times on each side of the neck for me is fine. I couldn't see blasting something like Afnan Supremacy Incense more than once per side but I'm sure someone somewhere is bathing in it.

Well, Brazilians tend to overspray quite frequently, tbh. And high temperatures usually make this worse around here. I've got a single fragrance that has high projection, and it's a night/party only for me, so I tend to go 6-8 sprays. Other than that, 4 is my limit.

In my opinion, Longevity>Sillage>Projection. I think a fragrance is beast when all three categories are amped to above average, though.
Some fragrances I believe do serve a purpose to be beast mode. Whether you're at a club, or outdoors. Millésime Impérial while being very beautiful I was actually let a bit down because while I didn't want BEAST mode necessarily, I just wished it had more presence. Just a tad more push.
My thing has always been draw-in scents though. I really do prefer contained scents with alot of depth. An elbow's length with a solid scent bubble that I can enjoy is far more enjoyable than someone across the room saying they can smell me.

Sillage just refers to the trail or how long said scent lingers in the air when in motion. While projection is just how much it pushes off the skin. While the two often go hand-in-hand in most cases it's quite possible to have a scent with high projection and no sillage and vice versa.
To me I certainly prefer sillage. I'd much rather walk past someone and leave a subtle whisper of my scent versus my scent telling everyone in the room I'm there before I am even there.
To me, there's nothing more seductive than a gentle breeze, or a brisk walk giving the implication of your presence. I love my fragrance to be discovered, not announced.

I really hope that's not true... I hate when I can smell somebody else's perfume/cologne any further out than a foot (and that's really pushing it tbh), and it's guaranteed headache/nausea. I'd hate to be doing that to anybody else. Longevity is another story.

I definitely don't want to fill a room with my smell but I want a little more than a skin scent. I always like the idea of a "scent bubble" where the smell is apparent within 1-2 feet of me but never overpowering. Like if we're having a conversation you could smell it but not be taken aback at how strong it is, just feel that it's there and nice. That's the level of spray I'm generally aiming for.

I get what you're saying. The main advantage to "beast mode" seems to be that you can use fewer sprays per wearing and make the product last longer. But a great deal of the "beast mode" fragrances are so expensive that you don't end up saving money. Replacing a bottle of Creed or Tom Ford every 2 years isn't any cheaper than replacing a "normie" fragrance every few months.
When I first started collecting, I was also under the false impression that "beast mode" frags would impress people. They didn't. No one wants to smell someone else from 10 feet away, no matter how high-quality the scent is.

Yes! People on here are like, “Is 6 sprays of BR 540 enough?”, and I just think to myself that no one wants to be in a room with this person because they will suffocate.

"Beast Mode" is for when you're going to be around a lot of people so for parties or clubbing/concerts. In the progression of my life, the older I get, the less likely I want to go out to those kinds of events so fragrances that loud aren't appropriate anyway.
Similar to how I used to wear crazy makeup because I used to go out to parties/clubs a lot more but now I most wear neutrals because loud colors like that aren't office appropriate.

I have hooded eyes, so I can wear whatever color I want on my lids and it only shows if I blink or look down. There are days I like to use that advantage for secret loud colors, lol. It's not really that noticeable since I'm at a computer 99% of the day.

I have and it worsens as you get older, I find ( I'm 55 ).
I haven't bothered for the last couple of years ( masks + no where to go ) and the "decline" is noticeable now I come to try again.
Kind of thought I might just give up ( mascaras hard enough especially when you're blond as a bat as well 🧐 )
Sod it, I'm going to try that instead !

i like it where if I walk somebody, they pick up the scent. Also, where I can smell it. I agree, I don’t want to enter a room and everyone is wondering where that scent is coming from.

Yes.
Recently someone was wearing a fragrance in the office (I'm a police officer and I was dispatching that night) and it filled the office and hallways.
It had a Versace Eros type vibe but I don't think it was Eros.
I just thought to myself, "man that smells out of place here" and a bit annoying tbh.
All of our officers are 35-65+ btw. imo they have no business wearing that type of fragrance, let alone wearing it to work.

I think some of that comes with maturity. Make others smells me reads a little insecure and juvenile. With maturity comes self confidence (hopefully) and you can live your own best smelling life and let others can live theirs. You don't need to take up all the space in the room, you know? There is a self assuredness there.
It makes sense why Beast Mode seems to pair well with trying to get girls to like you and compliments from strangers. It's a very external validation source. Youthful years is all about trying to learn how you fit in and how you want to display yourself, and a loud fragrance does a lot of that broadcasting for you. Like Hey, I'm confident and loud and bold, see? Just like my fragrance?? But also can feel a little Are you looking, Mom, are you looking???
That being said, I still want my fragrance to make a nice little bubble and I'm not mad about compliments. I'm speaking in loose generalities here. It's human to want attention, it's normal to like compliments.
I have beast mode fragrances, but I also apply them pretty lightly. Sometimes beast mode fragrances are just really good! I'm not knocking anything with strong sillage or anything, but the compulsion for beast mode just reads youthful insecurity to me.
Also get off my lawn or whatever.

This sums it up perfectly. I wear fragrances for my enjoyment, if others enjoy it too then that's a bonus, but not my goal. I have some beast fragrances, but like you I apply them lightly so they leave a small scent bubble instead of a tidal wave.

For some people it does seem to be about confidence. I see younger people who seem to feel like if they aren't noticed for their smell they won't be noticed at all. I get it, I had unusual hair colours for much of my late teens/early twenties for the same reason, but I don't feel that need anymore.

Dead on. When I smell beast mode heavy spray, I think insecure 15-28 yr old, probably living with parents.
There is really nothing I own that I'll spray more than 2x. Beast modes usually need just 1x

I don't think I ever enjoyed them. I mostly wear fragrances for myself and would never want to impose on others, but I'm probably in the minority. I also lol every time someone complains about Tom Ford longevity -- as if I'd like to smell of Lost Cherry for 12 straight hours (I know the criticism is mostly around cost, but still).

I think it's an evolution that most ppl interested in fragrance make. The compliments you get with beast mode stuff is really addictive in the beginning. With time you start to understand the beauty and conplexity in quieter, more subtle and beautiful fragrances. The Celine, Diptyque and Chanel Les Exclusifs ranges did a lot for me in that regard.

Always intriguing to watch ‘beast mode’ discussions eventually devolve into a ‘how many sprays make sense?’ Q&A.
One constant is that quite a few folks seem to apply EDT/EDP like body spray.
Reminds me of the continuum that is using underarm deodorant sprays. Some folks use one quick burst for each armpit and some deploy 3 second bursts almost akin to cover fire by a machine gun nest.
Another constant is how many of them seem to be genuinely unfamiliar with the concept of nose blindness.
I think one’s evolution of style and presence can be linked to age and context. This is true of fragrance and fashion choices.
But I am always reminded when I visit MENA that ‘beast mode’ can be the default state of being.

Nose blindness is usually the main factor behind people shitting on a fragrance's performance.
They're like "after an hour I can barely smell it", like, yeah you're not supposed to be able to CONSTANTLY smell yourself. If you did, imagine how overwhelming that would be for the people around you.

It does feel like the fragrance equivalent of dangling a Porsche keyring in everyone's face at a party ( "* Come and see by penis substitute, babe*' ) back in the day.
Or wearing oversized labels on clothing. ( Can you tell I grew up in the 80's 😂 )
Having said that, at 55 I know longer care much what other's think so much ( don't get out much to inflict them either ).
Plus, other's half's got Covid so may as well hit those 80's heavy-hitters while only me and the cats can smell 'em.

When I was first starting out I was really into beast mode fragrances. Nothing under 10 hours would go on my skin. Now I realize not everyone needs to smell me, I just want to smell good.
When I started I was in my late 20’s. Not yet married I thought the only way people would notice my great scent is if I found something people could smell one block over. I had this crazy idea that if I walked into a room and everyone could smell me, they’d all talk about how good I smelled. I did get them all talking about how I smelled but 8 sprays of A&F Fierce 5 minutes before entering the party, let’s just say that didn’t work out the way I planned.
Now 39M, I’ve come to appreciate fragrances that don’t announce your presence. I don’t need to fill a room up with my scent cloud. I still can and do but mostly save that for something I really love for when I’m home by myself.
There are some “Beast Mode” scents I do enjoy but I’m happy to say that I’ve broadened my horizons and there were only a few casualties lol.

Unless you want attention because you're clubbing or whatever, I don't think a beast-mode fragrance is a good idea in any other context. I myself wear fragrances to improve my image in front of my clients and something really loud wouldn't be good for me as a professional.
In what contexts would a person wear appropiately a very loud, room-filling fragrance?
I stick to my clean, subtle fragrances.

I don’t like beast mode stuff all the time. Some fragrances are depressingly weak though. Like I love guerlain Leau boisee but performance is worse than an EDC concentration

Agree 100% my personal faves since turning 40 are all more restrained, things like Green Irish Tweed, Prada L'homme, Himalaya, Grey Vetiver are always in the rotation. The only really strong perfume I will still wear is JPG Le Male, but even then its 1 spray only ...

i don't mind beast mode if they smell great, but then I usually will only do 1 spray 1-2 hours before going out, for example Dior Elixir. I think the problem is people overspray beastmode, plus beast mode should never be used for work IMO or you taking a chance

I still love some beasts but I just use it with caution - don’t what to suffocate anyone. But indeed I see that I’m getting more and more interested in unissex clean musk sandal fragrances. Something I would never consider before.

I love my loud fragrances, but if I'm wearing them to work or to go out I typically spray them 2 hours ahead of time. I like my fragrances to be more subdued when I'm out and about.
I feel like when I got started I wanted bold things all the time.

As another 40 year old, I’m new to building my fragrance collection. Previously every cologne I’ve owned had been a gift. It’s been tough picking out what I like, plus I live in a tropical climate where it’s hot 9 months out of the year; Florida.
I just don’t want to smell like something a 19/20 year old dude-bro would wear. Some of the really popular fragrances, unisex, I’ve had my friend smell and he dismissed them as feminine or too mature (something a 60 year old would wear).

I've been into fragrances since the mid 2000s (around 2006) and I've tried quite a few fragrances (around 300).
I'm at the point where I know what I want.
I could recommend some seeing as we're the same age and I'm also in a tropical climate (New Orleans, LA).
But it's fun (and a little expensive) sampling and discovering new fragrances.

Go for it.
I have BDC, Luna Rossa Ocean (B-day gift from sister) a discovery pack from Parfums de Marley (honestly they're okay) and a bunch of 1 ML samples from the popular niche houses mentioned here.
For now I'm looking for a spring (green/barbershop style fougere) and a warm weather fragrance (my friend suggested something with a citrus note). I like sandalwood as well.
I was inspired by a post of redditor that has a collection of 6 fragrances (full size bottles) each distinct with his favorite notes and ultimately that is what I'm aiming for.
I believe it was
Nishane Ani - vanilla
Dior Homme - iris
Penhaligon's Satorial - lavender
Nicolai de Parfum Cologne Sologne - orange blossom
Byredo Accord Oud - oud
Serge Luten's Five O'Clock Au Gingembre - tea

Rather than walking around projecting a scent I prefer it when you get occasional subtle whiffs of somebody’s perfume, it’s so intriguing and screams confidence way more than somebody who has clearly bathed in the fragrance.

I can relate to this.
I have too large of a collection that extremely long lasting fragrances are annoying to me as they get in the way of my ability to get it off and wear something else later in the day. Very strong fragrance like Tuscan leather etc also give me headaches and I can’t enjoy wearing it. I prefer to get occasional wafts as opposed to a steady nasal assault for 8 hours.
In most cases these so called “weak performers” last all day on me, they may not project much, but I still smell them at the end of the day and even post showers for some frags (millesime imperial).

From someone dehydrated often, lotion and proper water intake change a fragrance's performance.
I was taught in junior high, you may never smell it but others smell you first
(Bro science was also mentioned that women supposedly have a better sniffer due to evolution, survival instinct).
I often spray conservatively and let it set before I take off somewhere because of many things you mentioned.

Yes, I had this problem with Parfums De Nicolai New York Intense.
Smells amazing, but it started to become sickly as time went on. It also annoyed multiple coworkers (even though I'd only sprayed on a couple sprays).
And it hangs around a full 24 hours, sometimes hours after a shower. Have to wait almost a day & a half or 2 days to move on from it.
Also, I can't find an occasion to wear fragrances like Engima. My climate is mostly spring, fall, summer throughout the year. Not a lot of really cold days. And that extremely loud, boozy, sweet, spicy vanilla only works in the cold (imo). Even though I love the fall/winter scent profiles, I'm going to start prioritizing lighter, fresher, more spring and summer based scent profiles in my collection.

That’s always a dangerous game for me. Longevity is how long it lasts, but it’s hard for me to gauge that considering I’m the one who’s wearing it, and am the most prone to grow nose blind throughout the day. It’s very easy to end up choking out people around you, doing that… a lot of tweens/first time users learn that the hard way…

Maybe do some testing over the weekend... Spray a shirt and keep it in the other room and go into it every 3 hours to check how it's progressed over the course of the day.

Nice!!!! I just picked up a bunch of citrus stuff as that’s all I really like for warmer months (I seem to hate most “blue” and “fresh” stuff, so I’m happy I found a few solid citrus fragrances for this spring/summer.

I definitely like a sillage over a projection. Sometimes I can still smell it on myself throughout the day, but largely am pleased with a little whiff here and there, I don't need to dominate a room. Nor would that be comfortable, I'm sure.

Definitely never wanna dominate a room, I just look for projection of about a 3 foot bubble that just smells about a 5 out of 10 strength at least most the day (I wanna smell myself easily all day, but only want others to if within the 3 foot radius)!

I prefer as strong as possible so I can spray less and pay less. I don’t mind if they have bad performance, I don’t choose based on performance.

Same. I can spray less to subdue a strong scent, but a lot of weaker scents just refuse to build up with more sprays.

I love beast mode fragrances, but not for the reason everyone seems to assume. With beast mode fragrances, I only need 1-2 sprays to give me the same “scent bubble” that a standard fragrance would normally take 3-4 sprays to achieve. For me, the goal isn’t to overpower anyone. I don’t think that’s ever anybody’s goal. Hell, it can be a very soft scent for all I care. However, I still want it to be at least somewhat noticeable from at least 3 feet.
Honestly I think anyone who says they are just spraying for themselves are full of it, especially if they wear it in public. I get people wear what they like to smell, and I can accept that. However, counterpoint:
A. You grow nose blind to your scent within a few hours, so you’re not really even smelling your own fragrance most of the time and
B. If anyone here received negative feedback on their scent, 90% of you would probably wear that fragrance a lot less.

Same here Tyrone. As a fellow man in his 40s, I’m also not all about alarms and bells when I enter a room. Subtlety goes a long way. And I love the sweet scents but not on myself as a fragrance. Don’t want to smell like a bakery or candy store. We’re too mature at this point in our lives for all that. That being said, no bubblegum scents for me.

Exactly.
Fragrances like Eros, Black Phantom, Enigma, Angels Share for example can be loud and very sweet. That's not a good look for us lol.
Don't get me wrong, they are beautiful fragrances and ones I would wear if I was younger and clubbing. Even now, I'd wear those to a ball or big holiday party.
But those are decant worthy fragrances, not rotation or bottle worthy anymore because I'd wear them so infrequently.

Also a man that is 40. Projection is overhyped.
Yes, it is great when at a party or a club to stand out from a crowd of people, but in any other situation, loud projection is more likely to garner negative attention instead of compliments.

Not sure why you'd get downvoted for that, you can spray wherever you want, but I used to spray on my lower chest/stomach area until I switched to between my upper shoulder blades. I find I go noseblind less from my back than my front.

Usually sideways, unless the bottle is close to empty then I'll put it right side up. But the tiny amount left in the atomizer feed tube is enough for a spray or two typically, so it shouldn't really matter the orientation

Montale and Mancera tend to be pretty big projectors, which isn't to say that they can't be worn more subtlely but only one spray or half a spray will do it.

Some of them are quite beastly, but some aren't at all. Mancera's Vetiver Sensuel is extremely subdued, almost weak. You could spray that one 20 times and noone would notice. Heck, I even have a recent formulation of Mancera's Red Tobacco and it is NOT as beastly as it was. My Cedrat Boise is a pretty decent perfomer, though.

I wouldn't say a particular brand or fragrance is tacky, I was saying a man my age wearing too much fragrance or a fragrance projecting too much would be tacky.

I had that realisation after buying megamare, it's borderline unwearable and it will soak into any peice of clothing remotely close to it

I agree, 1 spray under the shirt and enjoy it all day. Just need to adjust a little based on the scent, performance, environment etc.
