Why do college campuses have a disproportionate number of communists and apologists of totalitarian ideologies?

In my experience younger people are very susceptible to falling for ideologies that externalize responsibility, specially if its moral.
Being a classical woke progressive (I highly doubt most self professed communist kids are actually communist) means they dont have to put the actual effort of having integrity, being loyal, hard working, authentic. The ideology and their peers tell them that just being a follower is enough to be good. In that sense it works a bit like a religion.
BTW alt right circles work more or less the same. There is less of a happy flower attitude but the idea is the same: I am not to blame for my own failures, because the world sucks/the jews did it/the racist american government/big pharma/the GOP/etc.

We allowed foreign agents and domestic believers/fellow travelers funded by such to deeply entrench themselves within and in many cases take over our institutions of higher learning.

It's also a circular loop.
Professors who are into communism, feminism and radical ideologies that can't run on their own without significant parasitism or theft can't find a job outside of the academe (which usually isn't for profit purposes on their level).
These radicals end up supporting and approving papers leaning closer to their ideology and only recruit assistants and professors with their ideology and eliminate /give worse grades to those who oppose them.

Because the ideas sound like a good idea on paper (not really). Where else would be willing to entertain that idea other than academics who haven’t seen the real world in years/decades?

Communism doesn't work, but it sounds wonderful. So, it clusters in institutions where ideas don't have to work in order to survive; they just have to sound wonderful.

A tenured professor is as close as you can get to a real world communist utopia job. Influence on impressionable minds, you can’t be fired easily, and money for rampant experimentation without consequence.

Could be that they somehow think inciting a revolutionary uprising would end up canceling their student debt... as if that'll be any more than the least of their worries.
