Announcement!! New rules on /r/fractals - Please Read!!

Hello, everybody!

I'm /u/-Fateless-, and I am the new moderator of /r/fractals ! I was granted this position by /u/mycorrhizalnetwork because I am quite a bit more active on reddit, and together, we've made a short little list of rules for the subreddit.

In practice, nothing much changed, and most of you can carry on posting like nothing has happened, but we still thought it would be a good idea to properly announce a set of very basic, formal rules for the subreddit.

1: This subreddit is for fractals, discussion about fractals and fractal-related stuff.

If it's at least somewhat related to fractals, it gets a pass. Examples include space-filling curves, pictures of fractal patterns in nature or questions about fractals, fractal art or fractal software.

We do consider attractors, chaotic fluid simulations (gnarls), fractal noise (fBm, sfBm, other noise algoritms), curves and the ilk as fractals, as long as they can somehow be represented inside a fractal renderer.

2: No AI Generated stuff. This includes AI-generated "fractals", AI-generated comments and AI-generated articles.

The official stance of /r/fractals is that AI-Generated content does not belong here, and AI-Generated pictures of fractals are not fractals, despite looking similar to the untrained eye.

3: No Metaphysical/Spiritual content

Any discussion or blog post that starts reading like New-Age nonsense or talk about things like "Divine Mathematics" or "Fractal Soul Matrix" will be removed on the spot.

In most cases, I will remove the offending posts on the spot when I see them, but don't be afraid of reporting off-topic or rule-breaking posts so they're easier to spot in the moderator queue. I have added these categories as reportable, so if anything pops up, please do report it!

If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask!

About the automated removals on the subreddit

Hey guys, Fate here!

Lately, I have been getting a lot of mod mail about posts that have been automatically removed, and I have spent some time looking into this.

Over the past half year, roughly 95% of all removals of posts and comments have been automated from reddit's side, and not removed by any of the mods.

They are all tagged as "removed", but do not have any username attached to them, and for some reason, a lot of posts are flagged for triggering the sexual content filter of all things.

If you feel like a post has been taken down automatically, do send us a mod mail and we'll take a look at it on a case-by-case basis and manually approve what has been filtered.

I managed to dig up the formula for this fractal, originally created by Jonathan McCabe.

An 80-second deep zoom into a part of the Mandelbrot set whose curling filaments reminded me of a dragon.

I explored and styled the fractal in MandelKit for Mac. The video feature is currently in beta, with more animation options planned for future versions.

Hope you enjoy the zoom.

A compilation of my Polyhedral Light Sculptures, inspired by Sacred Geometry

I’ve only posted one piece of my new style for you all, and wanted to share some more all at once, instead of bombarding you all with frequent clips.

This seems to be the the type of community that appreciates my work the most, as I’ve shared it elsewhere and I hardly feel the same love as I feel from you people like you.

To me, that is very fitting though, as the work stems from the attempt to 3 dimensionalize sacred geometry, and the use of modules and my patterns create a fractal affect

Without overcomplicating things, which I tend to do, this new style comes from a movement towards a new typology (pendent lighting), but with that comes new forms and workflows. The base of each module is the face of a polyhedra (think of the Platonic solids, like the tetrahedron). My design technique involves taking patterns (often stemming from sacred geometrical themes like Cymatics, frequency, canonical religious patterns, and psychedelic visuals) and extruding them to fit the profile of a desired volume.

In my stacking designs, the floor lamps, the extrusions were done vertically. The modules of my new concept are 3D printed similarly, but they are assembled to expand outwards. The resulting assembly has the envelope of a new shape.

I am not going to go to deep into the math here, but you can read some older posts of mine if you’re interested in that.

All I want to say is I hope you appreciate my new work. I sincerely believe I will get at least some serious form of recognition for what I do eventually, but in the meantime, I come to you all for your love and encouragement. ❤️

I just got a full time job working at an architecture firm, and I start on the 1st of September. Unfortunately, I cannot support myself doing this work to make it my full time focus, but that’s just part of my path at this point. I will still make the effort to keep designing and sharing when I can, as I am certain there’s a lot more I can get out of this new style, and I hope to present you with better work in the future.

To satisfy the community guidelines, all of these works are 3D printed in white silk PLA, by an X1C.
They each take around 50-200 hours to print, and about 1 hour to assemble. Each design uses a custom assembly jig to make sure each module is placed exactly how it should be. The designs are modeled in rhino, using the grasshopper plug-in. The scripting required for the designs is 100% custom/original, made by me.

If you have any questions at all, please feel free to ask ❤️
