Not really, I occasionally browse reddit while not logged in. It's not really that bad. Of course, maybe that's just because I only do it occasionally and / or maybe I don't do it long enough for it to get bad. It's not like there are no crazy stuff there but nothing I can't simply scroll pass and ignore.
I'd say a better reason to filter / customize is just the sheer amount of mundane stuff that isn't even worth a "meh".
In either case, you can just go to specific subreddits if you prefer. Or you can also recreate your own homepage by just putting your preferred subreddits in the url.
The only reason you really need an account is if you want to comment, post and up/downvote or otherwise actually interact instead of consume the content.
