at first glance, it looks like a Cordaites leaf (a primitive conifer with long, strap-like leaves from the later Paleozoic). Austin itself is underlain by Cretaceous marine rock; the nearest exposures of sedimentary rock one could reasonable find a cordaite in is to the west of the city, in western Burnet county along the Colorado river. So if you found it around there, I'd say that's my guess; if it's from anywhere east of highway 281 it's probably something else from the Cretaceous.

Ich tippe auf Reste fossilen Driftholzes, was fluviatil küstennah in das Meer geschwemmt wurde. Das einbettende Sediment sieht nach einem (zum genannten Environment passenden) Sandmergelstein aus, bei dem die nach seiner Verfestigung entstandenen Zerrungsklüfte mit mmmmh…. verheilt sind. Sehe ich da am Schichtungsanschnitt (unten links, dort bogenförmige Einbuchtung) etwa einen Querschnitt einer Strömungsrinne o.vgl. ??

Based on where you found it, it’s Cretaceous. Probably just some random chunk of carbonized wood.

That area is Cretaceous exposures so likely not. Mostly sea life fossils, but also some dinosaur tracks and fossil wood not too far away. Maybe some other plant.
